he's more menacing in the prequels, in return of the jedi he, well, is a little silly. Just talks about how luke will call him master like his dad did, which I can't help but giggle at. the force lightning was kinda cool.

George Lucas was once asked who is more evil Palpatine or the devil himself Without missing a beat George Lucas said Palpatine When the interviewer asked why he responded that even the devil at one point was once good but not Palpatine He is 100% evil to his core
@krel3358 Жыл бұрын
@@callum9352 I disagree his conversation with Vader on the deathstar when Vader tells him Luke landed on Endor has this subtext that if Vader makes one wrong move the Emperor is going to kill him then and there. The only reason Vader doesnt flinch is because hes got nerves of steel from literally being a kind of robot. In general I disagree in that in the prequels he feels a bit hammy and theres plot armour. In Return of the Jedi I feel that it conveys just how powerful he is after all this time that Vader is completely subservient to him and he rules from a battle station capable of blowing up a planet while he is extremely non-chalant, amused, and confident about the whole situation. The only reason he does not use the full extent of his powers is that 1 hes trying to turn Luke, and then he is toying with Luke torturing him for his own sadistic delight. Its pretty intimidating to comprehend that if he had known Vader would save Luke he could have easily killed both of them. If theres one scene missing from Jedi it would be a scene where it shows what Vader was talking about when he said "The Emperor is not as forgiving as I am"
@callum9352 Жыл бұрын
@@krel3358 yeah, in concept it sounds amazing, and the performance is great, but mainly that scene at the end only has like 10 seconds of lightning, the main thing that got me scared in that scene was when Vader discovered Luke's sister. The conflict was not between Luke and the emperor, it was between Luke and Vader mainly, the emperor, "could" have killed them, but that wasn't the focus of that scene the focus was that Luke's friends will die and Palpatine was really just an embodiment of Luke doubting himself. Other than that luke kinda figures out on his own that he doesn't want to kill Vader and then is attacked by the emperor, which allows for Vader's redemption. The emperor's power is really displayed in the prequels when he defeats Yoda which causes Yoda to doubt himself and that really kinda made me feel uneasy seeing Yoda being built up only to be brought down so quickly. Other than that, you can constantly see stuff in the prequels whenever the chancellor persona of Palpatine is displayed of him gaining more power in the senate and trying to limit the Jedis power, which, with what happens after in mind, makes you thrilled. Yes the political scenes were a bit lame, but with hindsight they make for some decent story telling and even warn us about how dictatorships are made, with all the power Palpatine wants not being taken, but given.

It's incredible how a theme that is essentially playing the same thing over and over again could be the most intimidating theme of all time.
@TotalTech2. Жыл бұрын
Lucas said that Vader was able to kill Palpatine so easily because Palpatine had become an epitome of darkness. He was so consumed by the dark side that all he could feel was anger, hate, fear, etc., and he had mastered these emotions. Lucas said if Vader had attempted to kill Palpatine out of anger, greed or lust for power, Palpatine would have known it instantly. However Vader's actions weren't motivated by any of those; it was motivated by love for his son, and love was an emotion Palpatine had no understanding of. Therefore, because he acted out of love, he was able to take Palpatine by surprise and kill him before he knew what was going on. Amazing writing!
@AllenReyes-t7n8 ай бұрын
"The Emperor is unable to sense love" ~ George Lucas Right.... that's why he was able to know Anakin's deep love for his wife. He sensed his fear of losing her, but don't forget those dreams were planted into Anakin by Palpatine. Palpatine was well aware of Anakin's feeling of love for her. Sorry, I call BS on Lucas on this one. Prior to the prequel Era(and WAY before this awful Disney era), NO ONE imagined Palpatine as a cartoon video game old man dual wielding against people younger then him. Both him and Yoda were representations of how The Force is something that goes beyond the physical realm. We the audience didn't expect a tiny creature to levitate a ship out of thick swamp water. Nor did we expect this thin, feeble old man on a walking stick to shoot lightning out of his fingers. Both abilities are seen in the physical realm, yes, but they were impressive at the time because we saw only these visually weak characters wield such omnipotent abilities that Luke, Vader, and Obi-Wan didn't use. Remember, this was before we got all this stupid video game CRAP from the EU/Prequel/Sequel eras. So when people ask: "Why didn't Palpatine defend himself from Vader?" The answer is BECAUSE HE'S A FEEBME OLD MAN, LOOK AT HIM. Do you honestly think Ralph McQuarrie, Richard Marquand, Ian McDiarmid, and everyone else on set was aware of Palpatine having the ability to TWIRL in the air with two lightsabers like some 12 year old's drawing? Give me a BREAK. The Emperor was portrayed as a feeble old man with strong abilities in "the Dark Side of the Force" not "ancient Sith practice". He was just "The Emperor" not "Darth Sideous". So when Vader picked him up, he was defenseless. It wasn't his lack of sensing "feelings of love" that got him killed. It was his ARROGANCE. The whole scene showed just how much all that power went to his head: - he didn't anticipate Vader grabbing throwing him because Vader was afraid of him - he took his sweet time torturing Luke because someone DARED to defy him. Palpatine was used to getting this his way, and having people bow to him. - Palpatine shows just how much of a monster he is to Vader when it's shown how just one small act of non-violent opposition is enough to make the Emperor lose it. So NO I disagree with George. Yes, I disagree with the creator of these characters. Maybe if he didn't have a history of inconsistency I would take him at his word. I don't hate the man, I respect him as a visionary, but it's obvious he wants to re-write what others(before Disney) did with his work because.... well, in many areas they did it better.

Palpatine's theme is right up there with The Omen theme with how dark and evil they are. It's interesting how Palpatine and the AntiChrist Damien are quite similar as they both had risen in a world of politics. The only difference is Palpatine succeeded where Damien had failed and he IS the Devil of the Star Wars Universe.
@tinobemellow Жыл бұрын
The other difference is that one is a kid and is literally sickening to watch, on account of the fact that you're being forced to watch a kid act like Satan and get killed for it, while Palpatine is a mature adult who you can legitimately buy as being an evil person. Personally, I don't see any resemblance between The Omen and Star Wars. The Omen is a drummed-up story about a kid who is destined by the Devil, and therefore has no choice in his evil deeds. Palpatine is an average man, an adult, who, regardless of anyone else, desires his own power. Not Satan's power, not the Dark Side, but his own power. He doesn't care about any cause whatsoever, besides himself. The Omen is depressing. Palpatine is literally terrifying. That's the difference.

A politician who gives himself to Satan to gain greater power, and thereby becomes the most fell being that mortal man has ever seen, and worse still, out of his own desire. Or even in another context, it could function as the theme to a phantom which takes the spirits of men, or something like.

I just wish that there were some amazing film makers, directors, producers, etc. out there that could produce a movie/tv series on how Palpatine came to power from the time before meeting Darth Plagueis all the way to when he completely took over as the Emperor. Heck, if there was some way they could encapsulate the Sith from when Darth Bane initiated the Rule of 2 to Darth Sidious would be ideal, but they probably won't ever make something like that.
