"Edge of Seventeen" is a song by American singer and songwriter Stevie Nicks from her debut solo studio album Bella Donna (1981), released as the third single from the album on February 4, 1982.[1] The lyric was written by Nicks to express the grief resulting from the death of her uncle Jonathan and the murder of John Lennon during the same week of December 1980. The song features a distinctive, chugging 16th-note guitar riff and a simple chord structure typical of Nicks' songs. The song's title for the single release was "Edge of Seventeen (Just Like the White Winged Dove)". In the United States, "Edge of Seventeen" just missed out on the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 11. Despite this, it became one of Nicks' most enduring and recognizable songs and has been covered by several artists.

Yes! Great song from Stevie’s iconic debut album. Destiny’s Child used the guitar riff in “Bootylicious”. For that, Stevie has a composer credit for that song. She a made a cameo in Destiny’s music video.

I love when you love a song! Makes it so much fun to watch. This was her debut single from her debut album as a solo artist back in ‘82. It’s so iconic in her cannon of work. The part she says that’s hard to hear out is “just like the white winged dove” which plays into her white outfit, cape and how she in turn is the white winged dove! She been interviewed to say what is white winged dove - it’s when the spirit leaves the body at death and the ooh baby ooo is meant to sound like a dove singing! I love Stevie. If you ever watched the American Horror Story Anthology and season called Coven she plays herself in one episode and she plays up the other theme in her career that she is like a high priestess witch. But a good one. Haha.

This is Stevie solo, from her album, Bella Donna. That riff is all guitarist Waddy Wachtel. The chorus is "Just like the white wing dove, sings a song, sounds like she's singing, Ooo baby ooh said ooo. This is classic Stevie, in fact she performed it at her Rock n Roll Hall Of Fame induction. The albums I listened to constantly in 1981: This album (the whole thing is fire), Adam and the Ants "Kings Of The Wild Frontier", The Go-Go's :Beauty And The Beat", and ONJ "Physical". Typical Stevie, she changes up her lyrics for live performances. That whole, "I hear the call of a nightbird" is not on the recording. Stevie is a force to behold live. I've seen her three times, twice with Fleetwood Mac, and once solo. Her longevity has earned her the title of Queen of Rock n Roll.

Mad respect for Stevie Nicks, her vocals truly provided the iconic sound for Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams and also Landslide which the Dixie Chicks covered so well. Edge of Seventeen was from her debut solo release. The lyrics you are referring to: “Just like the white winged dove, Sings a song, sounds like she's singing Ooh, baby, ooh, said ooh” were written to express Stevie’s grief over the passing of her uncle, as well as the murder of John Lennon that had occurred around the same time. The beginning guitar riff that you so smartly recognized was sampled by Destiny’s Child for Bootylicious. You get an A+ for that! 💯🥇 Stevie is arguably one of rock’s female GOATs. And I mean that with utmost respect, but also a bit humorously because her vibrato goes so fast at times that she can sometimes sounds like an actual goat. 🐐💀 No denying Stevie’s talent, but we always have a good laaaaaaaaaaaaaaf when Staaaaand Baaaaack comes on! 😜

It may not be my favorite Stevie Nicks song, but it may be the most iconic. She wrote it after the assassination of John Lennon and a family member (I think an uncle?) also passed, so she was mourning both of them, one personal, and one a musical hero. That's where the passion of those lyrics come out, and on her first solo album. Such an iconic song! I'm a Stand Back gal myself, but I get why this is Stevie's masterpiece (even though it only went to #11 on Billboard when she had many other top tens! I Can't Wait is also awesome and went to #16). You made me remind myself why I love this song so thank you!!

One of my all time favourite songs, it never gets old. Each play it just gets better and better. Play it loud and play it proud 🙌 The phrase edge of seventeen comes from when Stevie misheard one of her friends saying age of seventeen. She liked the phrase so much she was compelled to write it into a song. The song itself was written in reaction to the death of her uncle and the murder of John Lennon. Sampled by destiny’s child in bootylicious, Stevie makes a cameo appearance in the video 😎

This is from Stevie Nick's first solo album, Bella Donna. Fleetwood Mac consisted of Stevie, Lyndsey Buckingham, Christine McVie, John McVie and namesake Mick Fleetwood. This is the configuration most people know but the group was ever evolving starting out as a British Blues outfit. Fleetwood Mac's Rumours was the #1 top-selling album for years.

Main reason she went solo was because most of her songs weren't being used in Fleetwood Mac. My mom used to tell me she would forget Stevie was in Fleetwood Mac because she was so successful on her own. Stand Back is another classic from Stevie's solo outings. And the guitar riff was sampled on Bootylicious by Destiny Child.

I thought the beginning sounded just like Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger". When I looked it up I found this in reference to the song Bootylicious..According to Fusari, he wanted to build a track on a sample of Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger". Unable to locate the song, he chose to sample "Edge of Seventeen" instead. Anyway, another amazing Stevie Nicks performance and so glad you're reacting to a lot of her music, she's a true legend!

THIS is Stevie Nicks at her most ICONIC! The beat in the beginning was sampled by Destiny's Child...Bootylicious and the lyric in the chorus is "Just like a white winged dove...". When it first came out, I used to get let down every time the radio played "Bootylicious" because, I always thought they were about to play this song. Lol. I took my son to see Stevie when he was 14 (who was into harder stuff like Black Sabbath) and till this day (which he just turned 28) he still loves Stevie. She and Heart are the only women in his vast collection of albums that he has and actually enjoys listening to. ❤💋 btw, It gives me immense pleasure to watch you and see how much you got into this. Oh, my goodness. I have heard a lot of stories that people tell about what they think this song is about . It's predominantly about the death of John Lennon and also the passing of Stevie's uncle. As for the title of the song, that came from a conversation Stevie had with Tom Petty's first wife Jane. Stevie had asked Jane when did she first meet Tom and Jane replied "at the age of 17" but because of her heavy southern accent to Stevie it sounded like "edge" of seventeen and that's when Stevie said she was going to write a song called "Edge of Seventeen ".
