In this interview, I have the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Emran El-Badawi. Dr. El-Badawi is a scholar of the Qur'an and a friend. He is program director and associate professor of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Houston. He founded the Arab Studies program at UH and he has designed, implemented, and assessed degree programs in the Humanities and Sciences. Dr. El-Badawi also served as founding executive director and treasurer of the International Qur'anic Studies Association.
In this interview, we discuss Dr. El-Badawi's introduction into Qur'anic studies, his background, and some of his work on the Qur'an and the Aramaic Gospel Traditions, as well as his forthcoming work.

This is exactly the case. İf you want to understand the coran, you should back up it with the bible, the thorah, the incil and other books. This is the only way to fill in the gap that most muslim scolar consider "hole in the narative". Perfect interview. Tanks.

What a refreshing discussion! I am so GRATEFUL to hear scholars embrace Dr. Emran’s message, how we need to be respectful and kind to one another - regardless of belief or scholarly perspective! Thank you so much. I really enjoyed the discussion. Just a question though, I didn’t fully understand the reasoning behind the criticism of Christoph Luxenberg. His 7 or 8 steps methodology on arriving at the Aramaic origins of some of the words in the Quran could not be clearer but I don’t claim to be all knowing 😊. Nonetheless, I will be reading Dr Emran’s book as well. Thank you again.

Thank you for this topics because recently I learned that many materials from syriac christiran lectionaries got into the quran. For example, the prayer in al-fatiha is much similarities with aramaic lectionary/liturgy. what do you think about those similarities? perhaps invite experts of syriac lectionary and the quran? Reading and listening to many of your guests and listening to other inverviews of yours with other experts in your channel and in other channel, I wonder the origin of islam and who really Mohammad?? I am more towards that the origin of islam is somewhere (north not in the hijaz) and later redacted to the hijaz in time lafter Mohammad's death. Good to hear scholars talking beyond apologetics, who frequently cloud scholarly works.. Thanks again.

As a Christian, I too am GRATEFUL to witness scholars discuss historical context and their various perspectives in a kind and respectful manner! We can truly get a better grasp on scholarly context when “apologetics” and debates are not intermingled with scholarship! How I wish more channels and experts would embrace this approach! @@shelleyhender8537 Galad to know that I am not alone in the quest for historical works. Reading quran, I found so much materials in quran similar to the apocryphal christian souces and jewish legends. for example even there is a chapter on mary; QS19 of the quran. Researching on veneration of mary in quran has a lot of similarities with archeological evidence of veneration of Mary in christian communities in Jerusalem. Here a journal articel I found about Katishma Church ruin and how it ties to a verse in qjuran QS19:28 stating that Mary was called as "the sister of Aaron" Please find and download this article by googleing. Those who tried to reconstruct the Quran and Islam by moving it both in time and place of origin have so far failed miserably. They have not come up with anything convincing evidences so far. Rather every passing day when new material comes to light mostly in manuscripts or rock inscriptions they tend to back up with islamic version of events. Just recently scholars who studied pre-islamic Arabic rock inscriptions in various parts of middle east like Napatea, syria, hijaz and other places have noted that the Quran conforms to hijazi way of spelling and writing words. ORTHOGRAPHY. E.g in Napatea (the area around Jordan valley) tended not write a double consonants of same letter like when writing the word God (Alah) they used one L instead of double letters in the Quran (Allah). But Hijazis used double letters Allah in their pre-islamic rock inscriptions. And there are many other examples such nature; firmly grounding the Quranic origin in Hijaz region of Makkah, Madina and Tabouk area where now we are discovering multiple ancient rock inscriptions. And this has not escaped from historians and experts who now say whenever new materials come to light, it always tends to agree with islamic version of events rather than revisionists and naysayers.

@@saidhashi2856 really?? Did really rock inscription says the account of Al Anfil..Mohammad born in Year of elephant?? Really MHMD is the name of a prophet and Rahmanan is the name of Allah the gods of Mecca??? Read the Hymyarite inscription from Yemen. Have you read the work of Ahmad Al Jalal on preislamick rock inscription??? “ the word Allah” has been used before islam before Quran. Quran is just late antiquitis written long after Mohammad died. So there is no proof Quran was written in the hijaz. Do you have any quranic fragments of Quran written by the Sahaba? Again remember Quran and Islam are from late AntiQuities, yet no fragments of Quran from From Uthman/Hijazi Script. Earlier Quran was in Kufic Script…Sorry. The centers for earlier Islamic Scholars and caliphates were far North, Iraq, Iran, and Damascus, not in the Hijaz.

Did you know that, in the *rasm* layer of the qur-an, there are over *245* *instances* of k-t-b (kutub as noun, meaning books), and four instances of k-tā-b (kitāb, book)? The Abbasid-era editors who added the diacritics, converted *98%* of the instances of kutub to kitāb, by adding a (floating) median alif to the letter t. They left just five instances of kutub as they found them in the rasm-layer. The diacritics have destroyed much of the meaning of the qur-an.

how many muslims think reynolds is a great scholar because he treats islam gently and favourably? as opposed to you can actually understand the scholarly points being made in any of his discussions? it is an article of faith allah got muhammad to recite the heavenly book. el-badawi is looking at history not theology and is able to separate the two. when el-badawi says the syriac churches are the missing link between rabbinic traditions and quran can you muslims hear what he is saying in plain english? in pre-islamic arabia people already were familiar with the bible through oral teaching. so it was not a miracle of allah that unlettered muhammad was able to use the bible's stories to reshape into his quran.

In that case, the Quran should have been copied in similar pattern like the gospels and hebrew Torah. They tend to write events in chronological order. From beginning to end. Gospels..... chronological Torah......chronological Quran....No chronology. Quran is like a web, No beginning or ending. This disproves the false assumption that Quran copies from the Bible.

Hey Emran and Gabriel, people of the book does not necessarily mean people of the Bible. I think it’s a complete misunderstanding of the language of the Quran. The word kitab in the Quran doesn’t necessarily refer to a physical book. Dr Khalil Andani has a very good explanation of that word as it appears in the Quran. Please watch it. The first thing I want to say is about the subject of DNA. Studies have been done by various people. DNA has been extracted from remains buried going back Biblical times 3500 years in places like Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and the broad term that is used for these people, is the Biblical Canaanites which includes Jews as well and they compared their DNA to the modern - day Arab population in all these places, including Saudi Arabia and they match! This was mentioned in the press like the National Geographic and in Scientific periodicals, and Haaretz and the Times of Israel. Studies were done on the Palestinian population, for example by the Hebrew University which confirmed their DNA went back to the "ancient Israel" as reported by Israeli businessman Tsvi Misinai, and this wasn't only Palestinian Arabs in the West Bank and Gaza, but also including the Israeli Arabs and Druze, I should also include - just remembered - the Jordanians as well. The point I am making is you and your guest have been talking about the "People of the Book" as you have pointed out to mean "The Bible" Are also the Arabs. The Arabs are also the People of the Book. What you call the Arabs - a term that has been given to them by outsiders and the invading forces like the Assyrians, etc - meaning westerners, merchants, their DNA go back to Biblical tribes mentioned in the Bible. It is curious to note that these tribes like the tribe of Jacob and related tribes were obsessed with bloodlines and kept to them within the tribe going all the way back to Adam. Well, the present - day Arabs are the same. They also keep names and records and trace their ancestors - which they are very fond of doing - all the way back to Noah and Shem, Eber, Jocktan, Hud, and even as far as Adam. Which tells you these Arab traditions go back to biblical times. Secondly, I want to say, has your guest heard of Subud? Because I have an interesting tale to tell you of an experience I had, a Subud experience. I rang the Regent's Park Mosque one day to ask for some information and while I was waiting, having the earpiece close to my ear, I suddenly became aware of the recitation of the Koran in the background and allowed the sound to enter consciously into my ear and the next thing that happened my body came to life, including the movement of my legs my soul took over, experienced a strong surge of current like electricity going up and down my legs. Maybe the Koran is inspired or the language. Make of it what you will.

Some DNA results give differences between Arabs and Israelies, but traditionally they are all children of Abraham and live closely so having similar DNA is not surprising.

If al-kitab means Bible then you cannot doubt Bible 2:1-3 This is myopic scholarship. Kitab can mean books including Qur’an, Injeel (not the 73+ Bibles), Zaboor (not the current Psalms) and Torah (not the Oral one) Saheefa can mean small books like Sohof-e-oola, Sohof-e-Ibraheem and Sohof-e-Moosa But look what Qur’an says about Bible. Sura 3:78: And there is indeed a group among them who twist their tongues with the book, that you may suppose it to be from the book. But it is not from the book. And they say, “It is from God,” though it is not from God. And they knowingly speak a lie against God. Moreover, Quran 5:13-15: Then for their breaking of their covenant, we cursed them and hardened their hearts. They distort the meaning of the word, and have forgotten part of that whereof they were reminded. Thou wilt not cease to discover their treachery, from all save a few of them. So pardon them, and forbear. Truly God loves the virtuous. And with those who say, “We are Christians,” We made a covenant. Then they forgot part of that whereof they were reminded. So we stirred up enmity and hatred among them, till the day of resurrection. God will inform them of what they used to do. O people of the book! Our messenger has come unto you, making clear to you much of what you once hid of the book, and pardoning much. There has come unto you, from God, a light and a clear book. Again, Sura 2:79: So woe unto those who write the book with their hands, then say, “This is from God,” that they may sell it for a paltry price. No. He is saying the quranic verses is in dialog with the Syriac gospels. Which were prevalent at that time.

Badawi's claims are simply too far-fetched and seem like a lot of wishful thinkging and research grant justification may be involved. Professor Reynolds could contribute with some invitation to real data-backed hypotheses.

I don't believe that referencing Ibrahim Essa was a smart thing. The man is a semi-atheist who attacks Quran with zero knowledge. The other thing is: Arabic , Aramaic and Assyric or Syrianic were classified into languages by non-Arabs for a know colonial/ religious authoritative reasons . Actually Arabs in Mecca used to go to Damascus and communicate directly with locals without interpreters , the same way Saudis now go to Syria and communicate. So the similarity between the terms is expected and doesn't means that one source took from the other , actually it has no significance at all. Third: The term " Kitab" in no way can be transelated to "Bible" because the only "book" that Quran acknowledged is the Torah and ( revealed written on plates) and the Ibrahimic scrolls. Zaboor and Enjil are not described as Books, rather they are oral teachings . The most important thing is the combination of Torah, the rest of the books of Israel, the different four Enjils ( Gospels) and the rest of the added letters which form the Bible were never considered as Holy. Quran does not recognize any of the New Testament books, nor any of the books in the old Testament except for the corrupted version of the Torah ( which is claimed to be the first five books only). So ..sorry but any idea derived from this is wrong

@@zulfiqarsiddique8598 You are Bangladeshi. You don't understand Arabic. Let alone Aramaic. In Aramaic, it is dhu al-fiqr. Not zulfiqar. Dhu al-fiqr is not Arabic. One needs to know Aramaic and Arabic well before joining the cult. Otherwise just a waste of time.
