Maybe a 'can't fix myself so I'll fix someone else' type attitude. Some of the best paramedics, I mean ones I have witnessed with my own eyes, save a life, were completely unhinged in their personal life. Suicide and alcoholism is rampant in the profession. I have found that the greatest first responders... The best careGIVERS simply don't care about themselves.. really if they cared about themselves they wouldn't be paramedics, not because they would be bad at it, in fact they'd be better at it, but because the long hours and trauma we see just makes mental illness worse
