Note: you can get away with not having lockpicking if you max your Muscle skill as much as you can and bash the locks. A bit more fatigue intensive, but I was surprised by how I could basically bash open pretty much every lock, only rarely using buffs or a crowbar. Multiple options ahoy!

Encased you didn't know, this game is free on Epic today.

The anomalies are not something from STALKER itself (neither the movie nor the games) but from the novel that inspired it, "Roadside Picnic", or in the original, "Пикник на обочине" (there's a wikipedia entry for it). It's also the name of the restaurant in the game, as an explicit reference.

Was thinking of getting this, and decided to get it once you said it was around 20 hours long. I love CRPGs but just dont have the time to spend hundreds of hours on them. A small competent CRPG is right up my alley.

There's been a number of shorter ones over the years (10-30 hours). The longer ones usually run from 50-100 hours for a first playthrough.

Masquerada: Songs and Shadows is a pretty short and sweet rpg you can try if you're looking for a short game. I think I finished it in one day.

Actually barely anyone's covering Pathfinder. It's not getting coverage like Tales of Arise did for example. Encased is just getting even less. It makes sense though. Encased already released in early access a while ago making this somewhat of a soft launch. The game seems to be even more of a budget title than pathfinder and it barely got any marketing for it's launch. Except for through channels like Mortismal gaming.

The floatiness of controls really put me off the game, ngl. You open the door and see two containers to loot. You click on one. The character slowly turns towards it. Slowly walks towards it. Turns to face it on the grid (everything is on squares, not hexagons, so there's a lot of facing the wrong way). Opens. Can't use the items while they're in containers, whatever, close the menu. Click container number 2. The character slowly turns toward it. Slowly walks towards in. Turns to face it on the grid...

If you enable the developer console, and put the speed at 2x or 3x, I found it makes it a lot better. I completely agree with you btw, when I played the game on "regular speed" I couldn't play more than an hour without getting a headache which was a shame because I was really digging the game. You can enable the developer console by adding "--console" in the launch properties if you right click the game and click properties. Seriously, I have no idea why they made the game so slow it literally made my head hurt, but after speeding it up I was able to play and enjoy it comfortably.

A very fair review of what I consider to be a very good game. The ability to roleplay as whatever you want gives this game a very good replayability factor. Also a couple of pointers . This game limits you to 2 companions but you can explore half the map with 3. You do this by agreeing to take the scientist into Magellan station, and not doing so until you do as much as you can before u really have to go into Magellan. Just get Crump and Fox and hit the wastes with Katarzyna in tow. Not only she wont complain but you will be able to max your friendship with her this way. Fox is amazing cause you dont need to invest into ammo for her, so she is one of the cheapest companions to have in your party ( and also extremely lethal when well equipped). Dart Guns are very powerful due to the fact you can tire everyone. Even if you dont want to be pacifist, they are your best bet in energy weapons. Also costs nothing to refill their ammo. While in other games going melee is not the best idea, Encased makes Melee an actually viable and strong build. So dont be afraid to try out melee characters. Perks are very important in how you want to build your character and how to play them. So try to pre plan what you will get. To help you in this, at game start you can pick a perk that will give you 2 starting perks.

Yeah, Slacker is powerful 2 perks for 3 points per level and if you do this while Silver Wing it's techincally 1 point you're losing. You get very well rounded very fast

I'm really interested in this game. Sounds like all the negatives could be flashed out in a couple of patches. Whislisted and followed it on steam, will buy it if the devs continue to support and update it.

After February 2022 no updates will come.The game was published by Koch Media subsidiary (Prime Matter) and they have terminated the agreement with the developers. Devs had been working to update the game in the spring of 2022. I reccomend you to find a GoG version on the trackers.

This game inspired not by the Stalker, but by Roadside picnic(and few others) novel by Strugatskie brothers, it was inspiration for Stalker as well. It's even mentioned as a easter egg in the name of neutral zone, which called Roadside picnic.

Playing it right now, almost finished. Pretty good game. I hope they translated all jokes and references into english well enough. P.S. Selected max difficulty. Started with silver wing admin, weak af, couldn't do anyting on my own. Game became a breeze after taking Crump in my team. Buffed him for extra AP, while he was throwing combos like crazy. If I got surrounded, I just switched places with him, saving his AP again :D He also helped me to knock out people I don't want to be killed. What a pal. Overall, if the game was twice as big, I would give it 9/10 Really liked it, but I doubt they will "patch" it. I wish the second half on the game was as good as the first =(

It saddens me: this game practically screams in your face "I'm a "Roadside Picnic" novel, but now it's a game!". But since this shout is in Russian, everyone calls this game "Russian fallout" (another one) or "Stalker-isometric RPG". You can't call Soviet science fiction a "popular", huh? The Stalker-game took the concept of "closed area with dangerous anomalies and useful artifacts" from "Roadside Picnic" novel by Strugatsky brothers. And this game is much, much closer to the original novel.

This sounds good. I like the idea of a stalker/fallout hybrid. However, what made stalker great for me was that the places were real world. A total futuristic stalker doesn’t grab me as much, although this is perhaps more based on the movie than the games. Anyway, I love turn based shooter mechanics so this is definitely worth a try.

Hi. Two questions please: 1. Is there any maximum level? 2. How does precision or accuracy formula work exactly? Can I mitigate low precision (e.g. 32-40 due to low perception) by having many skill points invested in one of the weapon skill trees (normal, heavy, high tech weapons)?

There's no level cap and yes, you can level weapon skills and mitigate low stats that way.

Maybe I am spoiled by CRPGs with fleshed out companions and side stories, even romances, like Baldur's Gate, Divinity, Pillars of Eternity 2, even Pathfinder. Even Wasteland 3 while I wouldn't call the companions amazing they were at least fun to bring along, chimed in often enough, I felt had some real weight. I know I played BG 1 way back in day, and npc banter wasn't all the rage, but I dunno the more games I play with it, the harder I find it to go back and just wander silently for long periods of time. To me that part is biggest let down of this whole review, they just sound very one note.

I was loving the game during my pacifist run and then it all came crashing down. I was in a cave where I had to save some people from cannibals, the game is inspired by Fallout after all. The problem was that I could not make the dumb idiots to go to stealth mode and had to fight and kill all the enemies in the region. One of the captives even called the guards on me, the person that was going to rescue them. So, since I respect people’s opinions, I decided to let that person be eaten. Too bad other person in captivity, I guess you should have picked a better partner to be cannibalized with.

Ok, fun and all. My character was basically useless since a few step and he's crumble down to the floor-sleeping. I'm on the 3 map of the game and was not finding any bed or something like that the entire game. How can I rest my character. The little things like this are killing the game for me. Quick question, do you think starting as an alchemist grenadier and going legend mythic path, which increases your level cap to 40, and choosing arcane bomber as your multiclass with grenadier? Such as level 1-20 as alchemist grenadier and then once you do Legend mythic path, you go level 20-40 as arcane bomber. Would this increase the number of bombs per class by stacking as well as damage? Just wonder if it's viable. Such as both having the similar "precise bomb" feat as well so that no allies are hurt by your bombs also.

@@MortismalGaming Arcane Bomber is under wizard while Grenadier is under Alchemist. They aren't the same class, so therefore is it viable and do the number of bombs stack as well as damage?

Had a difficult time getting into this game.. if you go stealth/lockpick you don't even need to trade you just pickpocket everyone and it's soooo easy to do which makes it boring. Combat isn't very strategic at all. Companions are seemingly mindless and have terrible AI. The story.. meh I find it difficult to follow because sooo many quests open up and most seem like explore this area type quests... Overall .. not an amazing game.

should have mentioned game completely falls apart in second half. it's still early access with big empty areas with nothing to do.

this had the makings of greatness imo but some design choices and... idk what to call it... hmm lack of work done in some areas of the game, like there areas that is supposed to be populated but then it will be barren and barely any people in the zone and mostly just patrols, the system where settlements or citys or towns or whatever get attacked sucks cus the npcs never heal so after a few attacks the guards/ turrets in the forefront die and stay dead, very annoying, and then when you have skill checks most of the time lets say its a skill check where you have to convince someone and you pick that skill check instead of showing us dialogue that would be funny or smart or whatever the narrator just takes over and says something along the lines of "you convinced him with your arguments" or something, it doesnt happen all the time but you just know whoever was writing the skill check responses took shortcuts on alot of stuff. When it hits though it hits it fuckin good imo but theres just stuff that are super annoying that i wished was worked on more
