While I loved Enderal and praise it for almost everything, I have to correct this video on something. The world of Enderal is not open like Skyrim`s. Theres not many open fields and you cant really climb the mountains, so if you wanna go from one point to the other you are forced to follow the main roads. For me that lack of freedom that I was so used to in Skyrim was the biggest flaw in Enderal, but the game more than made up for it with the amazing writing and storytelling.

Do not forget that most of Enderal is also heavily level locked. You can try going to Duneville at like Level 5, but you will NOT have a good time. A lot of the quests are a type of "accept, progress, wait until getting stronger, then continue" which breaks up the flow so much and makes ne game feel that much more locked up. Definitely not open.

@@Nuniixo which was a huge negative point a ton of people had for skyrim that everything is adjusted to your level and you cant really feel the power while leveling up
@Nuniixo
@Nuniixo Ай бұрын
@@overdev1993 There are way better ways of handling levelling to be sure, however Enderal's way is also not ideal. It's a really big powerstop especially if someone wants to play a more nuanced and roleplay-ish build (in a roleplaying game, by the way) and doesnt want to min-max. Enderal's unleveled system just locks the majority of even early game content (like bounties) behind levels which just grinds progression to a halt while the player scrambles to try and level up before doing what they actually want to do (like the quests, or exploration)
@Nuniixo
@Nuniixo Ай бұрын
Also not to mention most players enjoy a challenge, a difficulty, but not to the point the difficulty/challenge becomes tedium. Skyrim's, and by extension Enderal's (it's barely changed, just with the addition of talents) combat is tedious. Difficulty in Skyrim or a Skyrim-based game can only be dictated by something like damage resistance and health sponging. If Enderal still kept it's level-locked regions, but scaled the enemies at least in a say 5 level limit, it would at least allow the player to explore a bit more fairly and openly.

To be honest it was easier to install on Steam. But once installed you can still mod the mod with Vortex. In fact, since it has shared resources often mods you added to Skyrim's large statues will show up in Enderal's shrines. That said, it is a little weird to see distinctive Dwemer architecture and not have Dwemer mentioned in the game.

Well in the spirit of your refusal to leek spoilers I will omit names but I failed to complete a companion quest in time and thought I could live with the consequences. Enderal was an amazing experience for me, I've played it a couple of times never even feeling the need to add any mods, there's simply such a wealth of details and thought provoking ideas in that game. It gives me joy to see something like this grow purely from the passion of creators, those type of projects are usually more niche, but also basically always something beautiful.

@@HevadeWe I love you for saying this, and that's exactly how I feel.. I wish that a lot of the major game developers what Enderal represents and roll with it.. because I like the way that the leveling system is set up, I like that you have to purchase points from books. A lot of people complain because they thought that the world map was too small or. Confined.. I feel like it's meant to be an eerie mysterious unpredictable experience. @@JesseJamison-f6i Absolutely! Ultimately I fear that major developers always will be restrained by their bottom line, but it has been done before; the witcher 3, Larian studios, those are to me instances of developers that maintained their creative liberty while swimming the wider economic seas. One thing I love about Enderal that isn't immediately obvious, is that a lot of the questlines have links to each-other that only become clear when you piece things together yourself, and even then it maintains a sense of mystery, making the world feel cohesive, but also much larger than you could possibly grasp in its entirety. for example; there is a particularly tricky to notice detail in the Rhalata questline: one of the npc's introduced there (I won't betray which one) is actually strongly tied to one of your companions in the main story.. (Didn't notice that myself at first, check out "Paradigm of Low" videos if you want to see some stupidly deep analyses of Enderal)

This analysis and recap is amazing. You spoke out of my heart with many points you made and you gave me the chills multiple times when you skillfully displayed certain scenes with the specific fitting enderal music, because it captured the emotions I had so well while visiting these sights and experience the story the first time. Enderal is definitely one of the best games I have ever played and I read this sentence a lot from other people who have experienced it. It's simply mindblowing how this project was even possible by a small team consisting of ES fans. I want to say something to your comparison of enderal to skyrim: I think one can't simply say which game is better, because, and I know this sounds crazy at first, I think they both are totally different kind of games. What I mean is, you can compare single aspects of the games, for example the main story and say definitely Enderal is better. Much much, immensiley better. Everyone would agree. But I think skyrim isn't so popular because of the story. It doesn't focus on this. And I think exactly THIS is the reason why you have this skyrim phenomenon you were talking about in the beginning of your video: it's replayable because you don't have to follow the steps of the main story again and again to enjoy the game. You can go wherever you want and discover "your own" little stories, even though they might be much more shallow compared to enderal. But you can experience something new every time you come back to skyrim, discover new pieces of the world, try out some new stuff and embrace the sandbox system enhanced by millions of mods to cover the shallowness of the quest narratives. Sure you also have these side quests and things to discover in enderal, but not in this sheer amount that skyrim has, that creates an illusion, until a certain playtime of maybe 1000 hours, that there is always something new to discover. And I think it comes to the taste what you prefer more: experience an amazing, moving, deep story on the one hand, or create your own story on the other. For me I have to say I felt like I was much more engaged, immersed and really emotionaly affected when I played enderal compared to skyrim. When the game was over I still thought about the game for a long time and watched way to many reactions from you tubers to certain key scenes that impressed me. Like reading a good book I was eager to know what will happen next, so in my first playthrough I neglected many of the side quests to only concentrate on the main narrative. When I played the game the second time I tried to do every little thing there is and read every book and note and environmental story and got more immersed in the world, so that I didn't even want to finish the main quest because it would mean this experience will be over. But sadly at some point you did nearly everything, though it takes some degenerate play time. Still, I would be much more likely to start skyrim a 12th time or so instead of enderal, because I wouldn't play the same story again where I already know what will happen. This comes from this uncertainty feeling that there is a lot in skyrim you still didn't know, find or tried out. The mod powered sandbox. Then I would stop playing after some time, reallizing I play like a brain dead, quest marker chasing zombie with the feeling I would have eaten too many Mcdonald burgers. Because the huge world is shallow, the characters uninteresting besides maybe one, 90% of the side quests uninspired and boring. And in the end the question: Whats the point in all of this? Until have a year later... ;D

It's been a while since I read such a detailed comment :) Yeah, I didn’t quite express my thoughts clearly at the end. I also summed it up by saying that Skyrim is mainly focused on world exploration, while Enderal is centered around the main story. That’s why the "Skyrim Syndrome" works specifically with Skyrim, since it’s, like you said, a sandbox game. Enderal, though not small, feels more "intimate" in comparison and its world structure is more linear. No argument there. "Still, I would be much more likely to start Skyrim a 12th time or so instead of Enderal, because I wouldn't play the same story again where I already know what will happen." What I probably should have said in conclusion is that I have this weird thing where I replay games even though I know the story from A to Z :) For example - Mass Effect. I have gone through that trilogy so many times, hard to count... So it will probably be the same with Enderal. My next playthrough will definitely be Enderal. And then we will see if Skyrim manages to steal the spotlight again. And thanks for such a detailed response! Most people wouldn’t bother writing so much. I’m glad our thoughts and opinions aligned.

Two things: 1) I understand the critiques of Skyrim and what it lacks in immersion compared to not just Morrowind, but also Oblivion. Though to call Skyrim a “failure” is a profoundly intellectually dwarfed thing to say and mere self projection. 2) Can mods outshine the original product? Well incase you haven’t been paying attention, it seems like BGS is COUNTING ON IT. And that’s a large part of the reason that they have been backsliding since Fallout ‘76. When Todd Howard said games will be designed for modding, what he meant was “we’re going to rely on modders”

I've often said that Enderal is a mod that crushes the original game. The story is so much more engaging, the atmosphere is on par or better, and the companion characters (though there are only two) are fleshed out more completely, and they convey feelings and thoughts that one can sympathize with and relate to. Skyrim gets a solid 8 (out of 10), yet Enderal would be 9.5.

As a kid, I literally started with Pong. We hooked up the game system to our CRT television. The target shooting game worked very well and was a lot of fun. Then as a youth, I played Asteroids, Centipede, Pac Man, and my favorite, Cosmic Avenger with quarters in the vestibule at the grocery store. With the first DOS computers, I played text based games, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and Leisure Suit Larry. Somehow I missed the Ultima series. I just wasn't playing games anymore. But at work, a friend gave me a copy of Thief - The Dark Project. And my mind was blown. The graphics are very low poly. The enemy A.I. can be a little wonky. But the story, the environments and the gameplay are, to this day, top-tier. Between Thief I and Ii, I would get lost in those worlds for hours, and genuinely feel as though I had been transported to another realm. There are some amazing games. Rockstar's catalogue is great. The original Deus Ex was another iteration of the Thief concept. Ultima Underworld is excellent. But the creativity and imagination of those very early days has never quite been repeated. Like trying to catch lightning in a bottle. Two epic turns changed the course of gaming. The first is that, to make games available to a wider audience, i.e. more consumers, developers had to intentionally nerf the performance, scope and capabilities of their games so they could run on crappy gaming consoles. Originally, games were made for computers, for people who owned computers. But sales is not a metric of how good a game is, it's a metric of how many units you sell. If you expand the consumer base to include people who don't own a computer, and just want a box that will accept a disk and play a game, then you can sell more units. But the general philosophy between people who own a computer and understand how it works is entirely different from people who buy a box that does a single thing. They don't care how it works, just if it works. So with that, developers knew that console owners were not at all passionate about the process, about how things worked under the hood. There was no editing an .ini file, or creating mods. It was just, put the disk in the box and click Play. To appeal to that market, it made financial sense to appeal to the widest audience. That is also called "the lowest common denominator". And that had a tremendous affect on how developers made games. For a very clear example, compare Deus Ex to the 2nd Deus Ex. It's so bad that I forget the name. It's not worth remembering. The second thing that changed is that companies were launched and games were made, literally by gamers. The companies were inspired by people who wanted to play the games that they made. But most struggled financially. It was a brand new technology and a brand new market that didn't exist previously. Often there was not enough money for marketing and sales were unpredictable, even for amazing games. So publishers stepped in to fix the problem. They could put in the financial investment to market the games that gamers made. So that they could be successful. But Capitalism is a curious system. In the 50s and 60s - the era that everyone (well, every white person) thinks was so amazing, there is a reason for that. At that time, companies were not judged solely on profits. They were judged by what they contributed to a community. Did the company invest in things that benefited the community? Also, and this is key, companies had the philosophy that the people who worked for the company should be able to buy the products they made. From clothes to cars. Everyone should have a salary that allows them to share in the success of the company. That has changed. Now, the sole purpose of a company is to earn money for the people who own shares in the company. Not for the community. Not for the employees. Just for the investors. When Dwight Eisenhower was president, the top tax bracket was nearly 90%. That was extreme, but it demonstrates the complete reversal of priorities that has occurred since that "golden era" that everyone thinks was so amazing, compared to now, when a company's sole existence is only for the people who own stocks. Zero concern for community. Zero concern for employees. Just earn shareholders money. Maybe six or eight years ago, one of the airlines announced that it was increasing wages across the company. One of the big investors, someone like Andreessen maybe, said in an interview, "that was OUR billion dollars". So the people doing the work that actually earned the money through their labor, they had no right to those earnings. That "belonged" to investors. And that's what Capitalism did to gaming. It did the same thing that it does to everything else. But it is based on a model of absolute fantasy. Because the model, for investors, requires quarter by quarter, year by year, infinite growth. Forever. And there simply is no such thing as infinite growth. So the solution has been to pay less, offer less, while increasing prices. But eventually, the less that you pay, and the less people that you employ, the less customers that you have to buy the products that you sell. In the 50s and 60s, more consumers were created by paying people more money, so they could buy more of the stuff that you sell. And the more that you sell, the more people that you can employ. That worked very well. But even that isn't infinite. Because there is no such thing as infinite growth. It doesn't exist. So instead, to please investors over the short term and maximize profits immediately, companies focused on cutting staff and not giving raises. They literally went in the opposite direction. And now, we are approaching the tipping point. A point when the number of consumers begins to not be enough to even sustain the same profits, let alone make more. Then the snake begins eating its own tail. People aren't entertaining fascism out of nowhere, and not because of one person. They are deeply dissatisfied with a system that only has one goal - to exploit them. So is it surprising that fans can make a better game than the original developers and publisher? Baldur's Gate III was made mostly by a Double-A developer, with some Triple-A cash flow. It was developed by people who are passionate about games and gaming. And it was made for people who own a computer, not a console. It is one of the best games that has been made in the last twenty years. It's better than the extraordinary Red Dead II, that forces you on rails to make decisions that the game forces you to make. In spite of its incredible beauty. And the reason is that BGII was made the way that those first, early games were made. With the passion of people who wanted to play the game that they made. There are numerous streams of people playing who are people actually involved in making the game. Then, when the publisher decided to get greedy after such a success, the developers walked away. They would have eagerly made a sequel. But not when the publisher laid out new terms. Terms meant to disenfranchise employees. So seeing fans passionate about games making a better game than this diseased industry, based on the fantasy of an economic model that doesn't exist? Not the least bit surprising. Whether it's Fallout London, Tamriel Rebuilt, Skybilvion, Enderal - it's what I expect. The best games are made by people who imagine, and then make the game that they themselves want to play. Not by some Sociopath like Yves Gillmoit, Anroid Wilson or Bobby Kotick. These people don't give half a sh|t about games. They care only about satisfying the fantasy of infinite growth for their investors, while stealing as much money as possible before the inevitable failure of an unsustainable economic model. Do they really care if a game character is black or white? You must be joking. They only care about one color, and that's green. So, let the fans do their magic, and make good games. We can play them after the collapse of Capitalism, as long as we can have access to some source of electricity. If not, then we'll just be living the game, in real life....

The Veiled Woman is the Agent of Fate from Nehrim. Which will tell people absolutely nothing ;) Right! Don't forget to mention, that Enderal is a sequel to Nehrim, an Oblivion mod. It has a world 1/3 *larger* than the original and it's full with quality content. It has more jank, but it's a worthy title nonetheless, made by the same people. Many characters are returning in Enderal. Oh, right- both games deal with the issue of determinism versus free will and free action.

@@bjorntrollgesicht1144 I'm playing through it right now. It has a lot of great stuff and the world is really impressive, but keep your expectations in check. I haven't gotten that far into the story but the creators were still very young at the time so the story is supposed to be kinda nonsensical towards the later parts. The beginning is really fucking cool and atmospheric imo. The biggest annoyance so far has been that sometimes the game throws a lot and I mean A LOT of HP sponge enemies at the same time. It's not that often that this happens but it happens still. There was also an instance where I had to help myself with console commands because I was supposed to run away from enemies that were just too damn fast. It might be because I use OpenMW to play the mod. Then again, in Nehrim one whole quest was broken and I had to advance it through console commands too. I'd say that if you liked Enderal and Nehrim, You will like Arktwend too. Especially for it's world and so far cool quest design (I really loved the quest about rescuing the Dwarf King's son, inspite of the amount of HP sponges). Just keep in mind that SureAI has only been improving and maturing in terms of polish unlike Bethesda, which peaked with Morrowind imo. Arktwend is also a sequel to Myar Aranath, an another total conversion mod for Morrowind by SureAI. I can't wait to play that one after Arktwend.

Very well said. Calling Enderal a Skyrim mod really doesn't do it justice. It is a completely separate game with the only connection being the game engine and assets. It has its own completely unique, more concise, defined story. It is much less of a CYOA than Skyrim. It is my favorite game.

Loved Enderal and the fact that it could be installed so easily off the Skyrim engine. No wonder Skyrim has been voted the best game of all time. However, it is still being played because of mods that extend the gameplay and refresh the look. Bethesda hit upon what players wanted when they embraced modding and provided the tools to create them. The modding community did the rest. All hail Ulfric, Inigo, and Heather Casdin!

The only thing in-drawal did was create a very dark dark setting and added more roleplay but unless you're in the extremely depressing and extra extra violent concept it might not be your thing while a little bit of darkness definitely is in the Skyrim story lines and there are some very sad subplots even it allows a character to emerge into the setting. And yes Skyrim is very light and roleplay You start off with essentially a race and not much else there's hardly any backstory at all to your character It's only hinted at it and again as I've said before anybody who would join the empire after them almost taking your head is really strange that'd be like somebody putting a gun to your head and then saying afterwards why don't we become friends now

It's really quite embarrassing how much better than Skyrim this is. The writing, the voice acting (including the fact there's more than like 4 of them 😆) and the way it handles mature themes are just so far ahead it isn't even funny. I could go on but I don't want to write a novel here and the video covers it quite well. While Enderal probably wouldn't exist without Skyrim, it's just an incredibly stark contrast between what millions upon millions of dollars gets you, compared to a game that was made with the one thing money can't buy.

Me too, a little. But I love stories where the ending evokes both sadness and a sense of hope at the same time. This is best reflected in the ending where you escape to Starcity. On one hand, you realize that there is a real hell going on below, but on the other hand, there is hope that in the future you might be able to overcome this horror. It reminds me of the ending in Mass Effect when you refuse to use the Crucible.

Only thing I didn't like about it was the way the story draws to a close. Once you have finished all the side quests there forcefully is nothing else to do. Sure you might run around killing things for more XP but it doesn't really help that much. You are better off sitting down somewhere and reading every book or listening to every song in every tavern than grinding mobs over and over. I will say though that playing the game without using fast travel is somewhat rewarding. Creatures have their normal spawn points, of course, but the detail of traveling between locations is so much greater, the distance feels longer, and you often find hidden things you missed the first 4 times through.

It's honestly reductive (no offense! good video!) to call this a mod, what this studio made with Nehrim and then Enderal are full AA video games, using the Creation Engine as a foundation. These are full, completely unique video games. It sort of shows what an alternate history might have looked like if Bethesda were less insular, and they had proactively licensed their engine to devs to go nuts with it. Thank you SureAI for making it. BTW, you can get a COMPLETELY MODERNIZED MODDED version of Enderal called Somnium through Wabbajack if you are familiar at all with modding. It's incredible - same game, overhauled gameplay. Muskets!

Enderal is a single 'mod.' You can look it up on Steam and you will find its page. There is also a page for it on Nexus Mods. Additionally, on Nexus Mods, there's a whole separate tab for Enderal (if you using Skyrim Special Edition), where you can find and install other mods (like new textures, ENB or ones that change combat mechanics) that are compatible with Enderal.

Well, I mentioned a few words about the combat system at the end of the video. It's the same rhythm as Skyrim, only the progression system is different. If you are looking for something more like The Witcher 3, check out a mod called "Valhalla". It’s definitely compatible with Enderal. "DuffB" channel has a couple of videos demonstrating Enderal gameplay with this mod, so you can decide if it is for you or not. You can find the mod on Nexus (it is usually in the top-rated section). As for whether Enderal will work on the Anniversary Edition (if I understood your question correctly) from what I know - yes. Steam seems to only check for the purchased Skyrim license. After installing Enderal (through the Steam page), it will have a separate launcher, so there shouldn’t be any issues. But that’s just based on what I know. I personally own the Special Edition on Steam.
