So it's time to wrap up 2018 with one final case study and I'm checking out The Division: a game that I have put far too much time into over the last couple years - I love playing PvE with friends! Part 1 is focussed on enemy AI design and part 2 will be looking at how AI characters are managed in the online instances.

AI and Games Please do a video on the AI strategy manager of Rainbow Six Siege that happens in terrorist hunt. Each AI wave is different because the computer calculates the best offensive option based on what happened in the last wave. So if you defeat a wave that came from the south then tried to flank east and west. The next wave will attempt it from the north then maybe flank you over the roof.

The Division: Where the best strategy for AI victory is to completely ignore cover and just run straight into the player's face. Because while it takes 30 seconds of continuous fire for the player to kill a single NPC, the NPCs can kill the player in 3 seconds of continuous fire.

honestly if it takes you more than 1 mag of headshots to kill an NPC your damage is trash

You are a hero, who indiscriminately kills civilians without due process for minor offenses such as looting or more serious things like robbery. Its like Spec Ops except you never go crazy for the horrible shit you commit (I know, its just a game- but the story/world is totally contrived imo). Anyhow great video, the AI side of the game is fascinating.

Didn't know there was this much to the AI system in the game, though the AI for sure felt smarter than most other shooters at the time when I played it.

One of the main goals of AI designers/programmers is that you DON'T notice the AI because it just seems natural.

oh nice, I haven't played the division yet but I do play a bit of destiny and so I'd love to see how many of the concepts you discuss here would apply to that game and the different approaches they both use. looking forward to the next video already

It’s interesting to see how is the deep function of the code inside a game, because, yes people can argue about The División story and pvp balance what it’s right, but also it’s nice to see how the game structure was made. I also what to know how it’s the interaction of the best game mode in my personal opinion. The Division Survival Battle Royale. To be specific: The Agent Hunter.

I always have an interesting time with NPC's in ubisoft games. This one brought a stealth experience like no other. I decided to unlock all the safe houses DZ entrances, and DZ vendors on the map... as a level 10 character. There was one part where I needed to take a three block detour because of a couple of turrets and some LMB patrols. That part sucked due to the distance between safe houses and how many patrols there were. I need to get back into the division, no game has a gun quite like my hungry hogs. 20 rounds or less to kill, 218 round belts, 25% chance to reload every kill, 15% more armor damage, and the stacking 10% damage on kills. I never reload, never stop firing if there are enemies, and never worry about bosses. If things are going bad I switch to the other one. it heals me.

My friends and I did the same thing of sneaking around unlocking safe houses when a really low level. It was some of the most fun times we had in the game together.

This seems like a nightmare to work on and test. Why didn't they use a goal driven A.i. like a GOAP or inference engine, and hierarchical state machines , I would of lost it.

There's a darn good reason that pretty much no one uses GOAP these days. The overhead for processing a plan is huge even in a constrained environment. In a complex environment, it is prohibitive. Now multiply that by how many agents are in the game. And also, you don't necessarily get better behavior in a combat game. As for HFSMs, that tech is older than GOAP and actually much harder for designers to manage. (In fact, it is almost impossible to make it designer-driven... almost all the AI design in a HFSM has to go through programmers. That was good for simple enemies 20 years ago... not so much for ones we have currently.) THAT is a "nightmare to work on and test". By "inference engine", I assume you mean something Bayesian? Bayesian is a way of processing your knowledge representation -- not necessarily for making decisions based on that knowledge.

I've been playing The Division since the beta and its a shame that the AI dont really work the way you suggest it should. Will The Division 2 be any better ? I'm highly sceptical but have hope. Great video and very interesting. You got a new sub ! Looking forward to part 2.

I can't find anyone to play the Russian Embassy mission with anymore, very sad. Still a brilliant game, one of my favourites for sure.

You cant leave out the change that Hunters and LMB3 (Legendary Enemies) AI made to the game.

Imagine an op world game like the division, but with learning ai. Say you let one enemy escape, or you let live, and the ai would learn, and as they encountered other ai, would gain experience and learn about different weapons, and how to adapt and learn strategies

That's basically the whole Nemesis system premise from the Mordor games. Also the whole concept behind Smash amiibo characters.

Um.... Level 30 gear level ~270 I think at that time I recorded it. Depending on who I'm playing with (given some friends play less Division than others), we're either playing World Tier 3 or 5.

What a waste of time. There are only two enemy types in the Division. One that dies when you shoot him and the other takes 1125 headshots to dent a healthbar.

The way you explained it and what I was seeing on the screen was very out of place, didn't match at all. I'm sure its perceived in a very different way when you play the game.
