Royal Enfield motorcycle UCE G5 engine is air cooled. The temperature of cylinder head reaches 220 to 265F depending on riding speed and air temperature. Exhaust port is hottest reaching 330F. But engine oil in sump is always cooler than engine head. Oil temperature was about 149F.

Nice, thank you. This video just help me to chose a paint for my exhaust. I needed the temp data:)

When you point a infrared gun at a chromed or shiny surface it will give you false readings. That is why your oil sump temp was so low. It works best on a non shiny black surface.

alex ubillus You have a good point that shiny surfaces are not ideal for IR temperature measurement. The temperature of exhaust pipe may not be as accurate in degrees but it still gives some idea e.g., header pipe reading is much higher than tail end of silencer, even though they are both made of chrome. This means reading are realistic. Also comparison of exhaust port vs top of header pipe gives pretty good idea how temperature changed as exhaust leaves engine and reaches tail - further confirming that readings are fairly close to what would be expected................ ......The oil sump temperature was not taken from a shiny surface. The light beam was pointing to the dull glass window for oil reading. So the oil temperature reading is pretty good. This can also be verified by touching the oil window. .... .................. The oil cools as it travels through multiple compartments, and wind hits aluminum casing. Moreover it was not a hot day. There is absolutely no doubt that oil temperature in sump is lower than the engine temperature in the combustion chamber by many degrees. That is how oil cools engine.

singh5g Sir, Very nice video though!!! I too have classic 500 efi , 3700 kms on the Odos, 2013 January Model, ItTends to heat up at 5.30pm in Delhi , my bike heats up to extreme after covering 20kms Noida to Anand Vihar,Delhi!! I have been going through various posts to settle me , shown to several mechanics, all said it is Normal. In such a high temperature of 35*Celsius but somehow Iam not convinced, Iam using Full synthetic Motul 300V 15w50 Engine oil, using free flow exhaust..My last Bike was a Classic 350 Uce never faced such issue ... Kindly help. Very depressed

Anurag Parihar :Attach a temperature sensor on the spark plug as shown in my other video 'Installation of Koso Tachometer Temperature Sensor on Royal Enfield'. That will record the cylinder head temperature. From those readings one can get a true picture of the engine. Without an objective measurement with a reliable thermometer, the whole situation will remain at impasse - mechanics say it is normal and you disagree. Or buy an IR thermometer and compare results with my video. Then it will be possible to go deeper into the issue you have of 'bike heating'.

This is a good video. I always wondered what tempreture the Royal Enfield engine ran at.

Hello Mr. Singh, I have a question please do reply. I am owning classic 500 EFI. My classic gets overheated even after running a short distances (4-5 KMs). I don't know whether every classic 500 tends to do the same or it's just mine. I recently changed it's engine oil and done other services but no difference. Can you please tell me what can I do?

Deepak Kumar Joshi : It is NOT normal to overheat after running engine for a few kilometers. What was the engine temperature and what is the outside atmospheric temperature ? How fast was engine running ? ;;;;;;;;;;; There can be many reasons varying from oil pump not working to blocked oil channels and other factors that can contribute to failure of cooling system. ;;;;;;;; It will take lot more in depth information to give its solution. ;;;;;;;; Post this problem on the RE Forum where a detailed analysis can be done. Or consult your local RE dealer or RE engineer. It will take a careful step wise approach to rectify this issue on your motorcycle.

thank you for your information Mr. Singh. I will consult RE service center for sure. However for your information, outside temperature is too damn high ranging from 38-41 degree Celsius. I run bike between 60 to 90 kmph with an average 70 kmph. I can make contact with engine like 2-3 seconds but silencer get too damn hot that it burnt my leg with just one touch. Do you have some comments on this, if yes then please share.

Deepak Kumar Joshi : Silencer being so hot that it can burn instantly is normal. Even in my video, the temperature near the exhaust port is higher than rest of the engine head. Burning hot exhaust raises temperature of header pipe very high. ;;;;;;;;; Engine overheating is different issue with entirely different set of symptoms.

thanks Mr. Singh. I appreciate your prompt response. I hope everything is ok but still as per your suggestion i will consult RE engineer. Mr. Singh in near future I may be having some queries regarding my classic 500 as I have recently bought it and I hope you will help me the same way you did now. Your responses and suggestions will always be appreciated. Thanks

In US the temperature is measured in Fahrenheit and speed in miles per hour - though many countries use Celsius and kilometres per hour, respectively.
