I sometimes think we "over engineer" things, we used to make parts for engines, angles to 15 minutes of a degree, spent a lot of time checking keeping everything on spec, they sent an engineer to Japan he toured the factory, the Standards Room was not temp controlled, instead of using a sine bar and checking angles the just used a DTI indicator and a couple of marks to show limits. These guys might look like they are building well outside anything the west would do, but they get things done quick and it works, it looks rough and ready, but it works, they have my respect for working in less than ideal conditions but still getting it done.

The timing of when the west went to stricter standards coincides with the power and reliability increasing. They get it done sure but it won't last as long before the next rebuild and the a/f mix will be farther on the rich side to compensate for the larger variances.

Many of our garage workshops in the western parts of the world looked Similar to this in the 1920-1930s but still did good work. Often with only a dirt floor, and not always with electricity either.

I'm always amazed by some of the tools that you have. The boring machine I have never seen one that small. Normally you have to take the engine to the machine. I love to be able to find one of these that you were using here in the states. I am getting ready to do a Google search and find out if they are still available or can I find one that has been used. Hey David. The Boring Machines you see in this video are fairly common in our part of the world. Not as common in use nowadays. But some shops still make a good living using them. There are many different sizes available. Right down to a fairly small size for Lawn Mower Cylinders. But these usual came with a small base to mount the Boring Machine to rather than mount the machine on the small cylinder. I think there are Chinese copies available on ebay if you have a look on there. The company that made them in my country originally was a company called REPCO. They made all sorts of engine reconditioning equipment. IF you want to know more about them i can put you in contact with a guy who sells them here in OZ ?

@@weldmachine A good used boring bar machine of this type to look for here in the states is Van Norman. They made really good machines and apparently they don't wear out. If I had to do a lot of this type of work I'd do like I saw another guy on YT do and mount one to a Bridgeport mill on the other end of the ram from the regular mill head. it gives you both the travel and height you need, and the knee is a nice stable planar surface to mount the block to. I'm getting ready to do my Kubota engine with a regular boring head and I need to feed the knee to get enough travel. I also had to make a mandrel extension for the boring head to plunge deep enough into the bore. It's so tight with the block on there that I have about a quarter inch of clearance. If the deck was any taller I couldn't do it on that machine. I did a practice run on the old sleeve and it worked really well, although it was very tedious to set up.

Back in the day i worked on Volvo truck engines. The cylinder liner height had to be checked when installed and the seat height would be cut then shims installed to get it to the exact height, you’d then put rubber seals on the liner and drop it in with a special grease. Definitely no just hitting them in with a large hammer.

I've rebuilt a few of those engines also. The D12 series engines were actually my favourite to work on. When the cylinder sleeves had the O rings and their special grease, the sleeves themselves were thick and went straight into a water jacket. The O rings were to stop the water leaking out. What they're doing is more common on smaller (Japanese?) engines where the sleeve is just an insert and only as another wear component. The only things I question in this video is the use of oil on the outside of the sleeve and grinding it flush to the block. I vaguely remember using a sealant on the outside to help hold the sleeve in place and stop oil from making its way up in the gap between the sleeve and cylinder bore but it was a long time ago so I could be wrong. I also don't recall ever grinding back the lip of the sleeve. I thought that it's supposed to protrude a bit so that the head would press down on it and clamp it in place.

@@businessbear4076 the liner would sit on a shelf that you'd inspect when the liner was removed. If there was any discolouration or rust it meant the rubber had either let coolant through or exhaust gases and needed shimming. You'd cut the seat down to remove the rust then shim to raise the cylinder up to the correct height using a dti gauge. I was a trained volvo diesel mechanic. No doubt, many would just pull out the liners and just put in new seals.

Porque é muita mais rápido utilizar uma faca feita de mola de fusca. This Perkins 4.248 block must be the 100mm cylinder. Then they removed the cylinder-liners in the press to be able to use them, in the future, in a 101mm block. Because it's much faster to use a knife made from a beetle spring.

Он не восстанавливает плоскость заново а просто срезает забоины. Только хонингование вызывает вопросы, надо использовать алмазные бруски для глубоких маслоудерживающих царапин на гильзе.
