Can't beat an old truck from the 60s. Old enough to be dead simple, new enough to be somewhat practical today. Never get rid of that thing.

You struck gold when you found that truck! I disagree with all of the people suggesting modifications. Change as little as possible. That thing is awesome the way it is. Noticed the fender emblem was off, hope it’s getting put back soon. Preservation is all that truck needs. Yeah, V8’s/diesels sound cooler, but those inline 6’s have an indescribable charm of their own. I’ll watch as much video of this truck as you can put up.

We use to have a truck similar to your f350. Ours had the straight 6 engine also. they are work horses. My dad never changed the oil . He used it every day. One thing about how we shifted the transmission #1 gear is the granny gear. We used it if we were hauling or pulling a trailer or up a grade. If not the normal take off was #2 gear. Sure brought back some memories. From one shade tree mechanic to the other "keep it running".

we had a 67 with the same motor, trans and rear, but it was a "long body" stake body with wooden gate sides. it was a torque monster. We loaded it over the roof line with mason's steel scaffolding, planks, and bags of mortar, sand and lime and tools... while towing a cement mixer behind. it had a valve tick the entire time we had it, and weren't mechanically savvy enough to chase down the problem. if KZbin were around at the time - i would have buttoned up that issue in a weekend. Great to see you bringing this one back to full usefulness.

The best thing you can do for that truck is take that fram filter and throw it in the scrap pile. Replace it with a wix. fram filters use a cardboard filter element that will come apart and send small particles through your oiling system, no good.

I built my first car, a ‘48 Plymouth coupe in 1964, as a teenager. Since then. I’ve done a lot of things. Aircraft engine mechanic, heavy equipment/ Detroit Diesel mechanic. And if I were you I’d get that fram oil filter off there and get a better filter.

Lets give you a GREAT trick for holding the gasket in place while finagling the valve cover or oil pan in place. use 4 small zipties in some of the holes for the bolts. When the cover is in place, set bolts in the free holes and start them, like ½ way in. Then cut and remove the zip ties and finish the install. Really works!

Well you had me laughing at the valve cover gasket, those are always a pain to place unless you know the trick. Permatex makes a gasket "tack spray" you apply to one side of the gasket (the side that will touch the valve cover) this allows the gasket to stay seated to the cover and allows you to avoid the gong show you had putting the cover back on. Use the same trick when removing the lifter galley cover plates and replacing those gaskets as well, works great! The old Ford is starting to look pretty good. When you go to rebuild the Carter Carburetor that's on there, be sure to use one extra spacer gasket between the carb and the manifold, this will give you a bit better flow (in later models Ford had a 3/4" spacer they installed made out of aluminum for that reason as well as being a port for the emissions crud they added later). Because the old girl has been sitting a while, if you run some high detergent oil through it for a few hours before you drop the pan, it will remove a lot of the caked on crud that has accumulated over the years of stop and start driving. Six's tend to not like short runs, they don't get up to a good temperature to vent off any water condensation that forms in the pan and valve cover from the low heating and cooling. She looks like she's coming along nicely though, keep up the good work! Cheers!

If you have a pressure washer you should try DRX Metal Rust Remover. You spray it on and let it sit a few minutes and pressure wash it off and its clean bare metal. I used it to remove all the rust on my 1970 C30 and it took about 15 min to remove all the rust off the cab of my truck! If you wanted to you could just spray down your whole engine bay and it would remove all the rust.

My 1965 Ford F-100 with a 300 Inline 6, I replaced the broken exhaust manifold with Headman Headers, and built my own exhaust duel pipes, give the truck better sound.

My favorite engine lube system flush is diesel fuel. NO DRIVING!!! RUN IN IDLE ONLY!!!!! 1/2 hour later drain and allow for the diesel to completely drain. 1 Quart Marvel's Mystery Oil in New Filter, 1 gallon DELO. let um warm up before driving.

Tip for those gaskets on long/narrow parts like a valve cover: instead of RTV, glue the cork to the valve cover with weatherstripping cement, following the directions carefully. Yes, it’ll make removing the gasket more difficult someday but you’re only gluing it to the part and not the engine, possibly making the gasket reusable if you need to remove the part for service. Best part is that when you tighten the part down, the gasket will NOT move around or squeeze out and it will not leak. I use this technique on oil pans and transmission pans as well.

Thanks for the suggestion! 🙂 I’ll definitely keep that in mind! I’m not a big cork gasket fan, I normally used a metal/rubber style and they do much better!

It looked pretty good under the valve cover! Not too much sludge from the old oil. A good engine flush would probably increase your oil pressure a little. Looking good! 👍😁
