Around my corner of the world we have a lot of billionaire car collectors that hide their cars away in collections that rarely see the light of day. Never driven on the roads or seen by the public. I have always respected Jays commitment to actually preserving and driving everything he owns with an enfasis on sharing and showing his knowledge and love for the 'humble' car. :)

Part of the "art" in these cars is the actual driving. It'd be like if these billionaires bought a painting, then just put them in a box away somewhere. You put the painting out to look and admire at. A beautiful vintage car is a marvel of engineering. The look of the car is a part of the art, the other part is how it drives. Sad not many people get that.

I guess that would depend a lot on the price of Trakker's car. My car cost $350. Don't know how that compares to the price of a vanos unit, but apparently the exhaust cost over 114 times the cost of my car. :D

+Matt Close THEY STILL DO.
@mattclose1439
@mattclose1439 9 жыл бұрын
+chejlr Not to the level that they used to. The first S motors were completely bespoke, practically race engines, built with incredible quality and durability. The new ones are just modified versions of the same motors that come in the regular cars. The last true S engine was the S65 and now it is gone. To clarify, you can still do this kind of build with turbocharging, they just choose not to because its easier just to tweak it slightly and get an extra 100hp.
@eddief60
@eddief60 9 жыл бұрын
+Matt Close Any idea why they used the BMW engine instead of a Mclaren engine at the time?
@mattclose1439
@mattclose1439 9 жыл бұрын
+Eddie Mctopkek I would think because McLaren was pretty small at that time and it was probably just easier to have a company make an engine for them, very similar to what Lotus does but this engine was bespoke for the F1 unlike the Lotus engines which are very close to engines used in production Toyota Camry's and Corolla's
@Razerncfunface
@Razerncfunface 9 жыл бұрын
+Eddie Mctopkek +matt close For the same reason Pagani uses Mercedes engines. It is easy to get a lot of power out of an engine, see american small blocks that make 700-2000HP for 15 grand. But to make an engine with this powerlevel, this durability and this lightweight takes a lot of engineering work. Which isnt cheap and cant just be done in a year of development. So McLaren who almost throughout their whole history used engines from other manufacturers (cosworth, peugeot, honda, mercedes, honda...) took the "cheap", fast and safe option and purchased the incredibly good engine from BMW.

Yes BMW is a fantastic car. But lets not forget that your talking about two totally different animals and one has to look pass the quick splash of a car and its achievements and when you do you come come to see what im talking about. The Bugatti is a technical marvel of ingenuity that does what it does and it will no dout do it all day after day on the street without over heating or giving up its place in the front of a line of cars that get into this magical lineup of cars that in there own right has a good reason for being there. Im not saying its better or the best im saying your comparing apples to oranges in a world of diversity and craftsman ship. For myself I like them all. My final word my friend just speaking for me is if I had the money I would have a hard time deciding which super car I would buy.

Hercules Rockefeller Matra Bagheera is an option to look at, though not center steer. As for cost, they've always been pretty cheap. I almost bought one but the 1250 engine was a hard sell. Land rover were originally going to be centre steer, but it made everything more difficult for the driver, easy enough to make, but impractical. The idea was simple, put the controls in the middle and not worry about left or right hand drive options and save on tooling costs. The F1 uses it as a gimic, apparently it was for weight distribution ... putting the battery under the passenger seat wasn't an option?

jim dandy - In case you didn't watch the video.. The engine @ 627 hp n/a with transmission weighs less than 500 pounds with the car lighter than a Miata. That is a staggering feat even by F1 standards. I take it you're not a mechanic or an engineer.

Alessandro ari zaluski .. ok but is not like McLaren just throw the engine from BMW inn.. after they receive the engine units they dismantle each block and replace many parts with lighter stronger titanium parts pushrods, camshafts, piston heads, rings, special coated cylinders, valves.. everything was tuned, calibrated and modify by McLaren specialists.. so the F1 has the best lightened V12 units.. F1 are epic.

I suspect you cant replace that with metal because it is squeezed back into place. It looks like real F1 race car fuel cells. They actually use talcum powder to help coax them in. A lot more goes into the construction of one of those things than you think too. For instance there are internal baffles to keep the the fuel pump from starving from g-forces Another benefit of that rubbery type construction is that it's safer in a crash.

Remember the olden days of Motorsport, where if you crash, you die in a fire? Well that's exactly what happens when you make a fuel tank out of metal..... Thank god we have people with brains in this world, or 3 quarters of us would face death by fire eventually!...

Maybe he's like me and hates what BMW has become - they no longer make beautiful, durable reliable machines like the one in your profile picture, everything they make now is plastic trash that you can't even service yourself and is only good for the tip after 5 to 8 years.

I have been a McLaren fan since the original McLaren Honda partnership when the F1 was still in a dusty drawing room, (actually there wouldn't have been any dust, Ron wouldn't have allowed it.) So I have to agree with you, the greatest road car ever made. For a company who didn't build road cars to produce the F1 will be looked back on as a landmark in automotive history.

Look at the size of that power plant! What a huge engine. It's no wonder that car is so fast. A monstrosity of an engine with 627 horsepower in a car that weighs less than a Miata. Thanks Jay for posting this. It's very rare for most F1 owners to 'share' their car with the public like you do. Most owners are quite private with their F1's...which is fine. But Jay gives the average guy who loves the F1 a real world chance to have a closer look at it. Good on ya Jay!
