I drive hotshot in a 22’ F250 powerstroke. Currently has 225,751 miles on the clock. 3,773 idle hours. Came out to 338,941 miles in total . Everything but the Air compressor, steering stabilizer, shocks and of course brake pads is stock. Has a leaky DEF injector nozzle at the moment but it still runs like new. I average anywhere from 500-800 daily miles towing a 10k 40’ gooseneck trailer with anywhere from 1500 lbs on it up to 10k lbs. Drove it from Seattle WA to Richmond VA and From Greenville NC to Los Angeles in these past 2 weeks. And currently I’m coming from Portland OR going home to Houston TX 🤘🏽. And yes, I’m sitting in it writing this, while it’s idling 😅

In the USAF, we have these modified f350 tow vehicles(bobtails) that pull stuff around the air field all day, never going above 35mph. One specific truck, a 6.4 power stroke has a little over 100k miles and 15,000+ hours on it. That's a total of 550k-600k miles on that thing. Mind you, it's a 6.4.... YEAH... I've had a few work trucks over the years, most were ram 2500s with a cummins. I started the day around 4-5am and finished as late as 10-11pm. If I wasn't pulling a skid steer with 3 or 4 buckets and a generator down the interstate or a lease road that truck was idling all day long. I had to keep our computer in contact with the main office and it was a place to get out of the weather for the guys not running a machine. I never gave it a second thought until I got a truck with DEF. That thing felt like a blow torch during what I assume was a regen. I personally would never buy a used lower optioned 2500 or 3500 especially if it's a white truck. I know the abuse I put mine through daily and I was extremely kind to my trucks compared to most guys. We had a guy that ran his truck in 4wd ALL the time. Beautiful summer day rolling down the interstate at 80mph locked in 4wd. Had an old timer we called hill billy, his spitter was the cup holder and/or floorboards. Ash tray was pretty much the same as the spitter. I guess it was his form of fireproofing the interior. There was a reason he was driving a 10 year old truck when the rest of us got a new truck every 2 years.

A lot of semi trucks have Auxillary Power Units (traditionally diesel, but more and more people are getting electric ones). Basically, you can run everything except for the PTO, while you are parked, and you don’t have to idle the engine.
@m73m95
@m73m95 3 ай бұрын
Idling a diesel engine causes almost no wear. They don't have throttle plates (Well, not that function like the throttle on a gas engine), so they don't pull vacuum, which can pull oil into the intake track. They also are lean burn engines, so they hardly use any fuel while idling, and don't wash the cylinder walls .... Diesel engines in an industrial setting idle for many many more hours than they are used under load (Which is often times also many thousands of hours)... The problem with "civilian" used diesel pickups isn't the idle hours. It's that most people don't know how to drive a diesel and will lug a diesel from low RPM "because it can".... Any diesel engine, properly maintained and used correctly should FAR outlast the life of the rest of the truck.

My '95 corvette has a method for turning the engine over while cutting off the fuel supply, to circulate the oil and fill the oil filter after changing the oil without actually running the engine until you want it to run. All it takes is to hold the gas pedal to the floor, and hold the brake pedal while turning the engine over with the key. As soon as you let go of the gas pedal it allows fuel to flow and starts the engine immediately. It's also how we used to deal with a fuel flooded engine back when they were all carburated...

So Moroso made a oil accumulator that you could hook to your fuel pump solenoid relay when it comes on it primes the engine with oil turning the key on and off, you hear the fuel pump come on at that very moment it’s injecting oil into the engine that has accumulated in the oil accumulator under about 50 pounds whatever your engine produces and it saved it for you, with the solenoid, you do that a few times wait till your oil pressure rises then you start the motor
@FordFan01
@FordFan01 4 ай бұрын
@ratchetfabricationTheres one flaw with that test though, and thats the fact they did not have the turbo installed and the oil pathways were incomplete and not sealed. Think of the oil passages like a straw with water in it and your finger at the top sealing it. With your finger sealing the passageway the water stays in the straw, when you take your finger off (turbo) the fluid drains out. I get what they were trying to do but this was a major flaw with that test. The 8 second prime would be after an oil change, not necessarily every start up.

Yes... BUTTT. It's not quite that simple because everything has idle hours on it so it's not like the truck is going to be valued at 147,000 miles. what you want to look more to is total engine hours versus mileage and ideally you see something over 30 miles an hour average.

Fords accepted corporate average miles per engine hour is roughly 30. So it’s “normal” engine wear mileage is actually something more like 131,000 miles. This is because almost no vehicles spend every running moment in motion at highway speed. There is always going to be some idling time or crawling through stop/go traffic. Still, the point stands. If the truck had 4369 total hours and 3150 are idle hours I would be looking for a serious discount.

Why would a pto not factor idle hours differently? Because idle at 900 rpm, vs 1800 rpm (exaggerated for easy math) would double the revolution count of the the engine, making the wear exactly double..
@RealPolitik-dy4it
@RealPolitik-dy4it 4 ай бұрын
Not necessarily. At 900 RPM, the engine isn’t getting enough lubrication. While at 1400-1800 RPM, it is getting properly lubricated.

RPM at idle is ~700. RPM at 60 MPH is ~2000 under load. 2000 RPM per mile (driving) = 2000 RPM / minute. 2000 RPM x 60 minutes (one hour) = 120,000 RPM. 700 (idle RPM) x one hour = 42,000. Roughly 1/3 of the mileage. His math isn't mathing, it's backwards. 1300 idle hours = roughly 4000 miles at 60 MPH with minimal load on the drivetrain. Bro put the decimal point in the wrong place.

In 2007 I was looking at a 03 Ram 2500 5.9 M6 with 130,000 miles on it. It was clean I took it for a test drive and bought it. I think I paid 17k for it. But I didn’t know it had a hour meter on it. After learning about it I checked it and it showed 6,800 hours. I was pretty bummed out but it worked out, I still have the truck and has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I would drive it anywhere no hesitation.

Idling is bad for your engine in general. When you are at the idle RPM’s, your engine doesn’t get fully-lubricated, as it would at operating RPM’s, causing increased friction on the components, thus increasing wear and tear.

i dont believe thats the correct conversion.. otherwise 4369 engine hours would be 107287 miles and 4369x30 = 131000 miles. you are trying to say idling is worse than actually driving. i cant remember where i saw it but i do not remember it being compared to x30 but more like x10 or 15 as its not as much wear as actual driving, but it is wear.

Idle hours do more damages than hyway miles especially on V engines when driving under load the pistons are centered in the cylinders on Idle the weight of the pistons just rest on the cylinder walls this is why the engine oil in a V engine turn black instantly because of fuel bypass compared to a straight 6

He’s right. Some say 24 miles per idle hour. Others say 30. I know Ford USED to be 24, but that was years ago. Now it absolutely could be 30, especially with the changes in engine design and engine oils used.

The "multiple" always derives from the drivers age. I'm 36, so it'll suck worse for me than, for instance, a 24 year old. 👍 Now that we live in a non binary reality, gender shouldn't affect your multiple.

1 hour of idle is equivalent of 30 miles of wear on an engine, or driving 30 miles an hour for 1 hour.

A well designed oil pump should cope with that low oil film pressure while idling. Yes, I have a 1.0 Ecoboost Focus 3 and it's petrol, but I've been idling on it plenty of weeks and years randomly and has virtually no wear, but the oil pump tries to keep high pressure even at low rpm.

Soooo... Is it 107k miles or 147k miles? What on earth did we ever do before we started recording hours spent idling? The point I'm trying to make is that we observed that engines were generally reliable for x number of miles, and those engines usually idled as often as they do today.

Let's say that you service your construction equipment every 250 hours. And probably should service your trucks close to that. Take your truck hours and divide it by 250, that should be approximately how many services you should have performed on your truck. Always check out the engine hours before you purchase any diesel truck.
