Great video mate. Thanks for the tip on the green tabs on the fuel filter. They can be quite fiddly to remove. A few points worth noting, the car does have a dipstick as others have mentioned. Its also best to use Mahle filters. The cabin filter you fitted doesn't have the charcoal layer which prevents bad odours from entering the cabin. Lastly its best to start the service with replacing the engine air filter. That way the clean oil gets fresh air on its first start up. If the old air filter is really dirty, some of the junk can get into the clean oil.

That’s not the way engine air filters work. Unless you have a breach in the filter media or perimeter gasket, a loaded filter actually blocks MORE particulates from entering the engine. Do the air filter replacement before, during or after oil change- it doesn’t matter. And as for using only Mahle filters- also incorrect. Mann, Hengst and Bosch all make filters perfectly suitable for BMW.

Thank you very much, especially for showing the correct disconnect procedure for the fuel filter exit hose. Many other people remove both green clips completely from the connector. Very risky because you can loose and/or destroy them this way. No spare clips available, only complete hoses with mounted connectors. BTW: BMW Diesel engines have a classic dipstick, you even touch it with your hand while showing the oil filter beginning at 2:00 ;-)

Apparently if you have a bmw with the wheel on the right side, the brake fluid reservoir is on the right side of the car and vice versa. I definitely learned something today :D

Hi mate, my 320d also has that pipe/hose coming out the bottom of air filter box that feeds back into air intake pipe going to turbo intake. What’s the bloody thing for and how do you get to it to undo it??

Thanks for the video. Really appreciate. When I replaced fuel filter and started engine, diesel was leaking from heater end. I hadn't pushed heater end in enough, plus retaining clip not seated properly. I started engine again, no more leaking , however I noticed a buzzing, humming sound which I'm sure was not present with old fuel filter. Buzzing noise coming from fuel filter or fuel tank. Car drives fine. Anyone have any insights regarding buzzing noise after fuel filter change?

Hi Daly just a question I’ve done all the changes and checks but I’ve got my resets up before but can’t seem to get the service and reset up again do I have to drive it a bit before I can get the service and resets up again cheers great video regards John

Changed mine and took 5.2l of Shell Helix Ultra ECT 0w-30 BMW- LL04 C3. On autodoc says that I need 5.2l, so I went on their recommendation. No issues whatsoever as level says it correct even on dipstick. Car is f31 ‘16 sport 120kw 163bhp Efficient Dynamics manual

Great video mate. If the car doesnt travel more than 5000 miles a year, should one service every year or year and a half? Will the delayed oil change be very detrimental despite less miles travelled? Thanks.

yes it will alter in the centre console, it won't update the history if stored in the key though

I mighy do a interval service/oil change oil filter on a bmw X4 20d I am guessing same engine as this. Do you tend to just add 5L of oil straight or check how much volume has come out first?

yeah it should be the same mate, as I knew the exact quantity I did just put the 5l in but if you are a little unsure its always best to but 4/4.5 litres in then keep checking 👍

@@diydaly Ye because i know the oil level sensor has to be up to a certain temp before it reads a new measurement, if not it just displays the old measurement. So think I will drain the oil when semi up to temp and measure the drained oil, and fill accordingly. There is something to be said for the simplicity of just having a dip stick like I am use to 😂.

@@diydaly Haha in the end I drained the oil and measured it in my jug only to realised they now have a dip stick next to the oil filter housing on the X4 😂, I didn't notice it as first because they have made it all black so it blends in. I got just over 5L out of it so put 5L in and it was bang on max perfect 😁. I used Quantum Longlife 3 5w30 'bmw Longlife-04' so should be fine now for anothe year, not a fan on the display saying next service in 19k miles. seems a bit too long for my liking.

Thanks for the comment dean, yours must have a different filter on, if its still just a plastic cap you'll need a universal filter removal tool or the correct fitting cap.. you can get metal caps that slot over the top of yours .. ill attach a link.. you'll just need to check how may sides yours has as there are some options, they call the sides "flutes" on the listing .. ebay.us/7XhSEN

With the oil you don't just find 0w30 right, it's meant to meet the oil spec it needs too like BMW LL- 04? If not it won't have an additive package to support a chain timed engine causing premature wear.

I use a really high spec 0w30 low ash that we buy direct from vw in 200l barrels .. It crosses over to the same spec LL04 . The dealers are quite crafty in naming oil specs so it’s quite hard to determine which one is correct. Although the ll04 is the main recommended oil they do list alternatives that can be used .. certainly the low ash is a better oil to run in an engine with a dpf.. 👍

You MUST bleed the fuel system by activating the low pressure fuel pump in the tank, trying to start the engine without doing that can write off your car, because you'll be trying to run the high pressure fuel pump dry and it can break very easily and distribute swarf around the system and destroy your car. Source: destroyed my car.

So how do you activate the low pressure fuel pump?

​ @HowitzerBlitzer there's no easy way, you have to either download ISTA and use an ENET cable then there's a service function called "Bleed fuel system", it pushes 4-5 bar fuel right to the high pressure pump and lets air out for 3 minutes, so the HPFP doesn't start dry. Some other OBD tools may offer that too. Some people short a 12V wire under the fuel tank-side rear seat and activate the pump that way.
