How would the all-new 6th Gen 2025 Toyota 4Runner drive both off-road and on-road? That is the question Automotive Engineer David Chao answers through his often-accurate predictions based on his analysis of other similar TNGA-F vehicles. David discusses in detail the off-road capability of the new 4Runner based on his experience driving the new Tacoma which shares the basic architecture... and then for the latter half of the video David talks about the difference between the 5th Gen and 6th Gen 4Runner in terms of the on-road city/highway driving feel.

 I have a 2024 4Runner ORP with KDSS. The Body roll is similar to my Lexus ES 350 sedan. My 4Runner is not slow around corners, nor is it scary at highways speeds on a curvy road and it never feels it will tip over on quick turns!!!! It is great on the highway and I overland/off-road and it is fully loaded. I bet my 4Runner will handle curves and turns better than 2025 model because there is no KDSS option on the 2025. But the 2025 GX 550 has KDSS. As far as underpowered, I have gone hours driving at 75 miles on the highway and through mountain highways. NO Problem with power!! Have no issues merging on highways. It lives up to its 4Runner heritage and exceeds my needs for overlanding and off- roading. David, I guess for drivers like you who mostly use the 4Runner as a mall crawler more power would give you more driving enjoyment. But What a waste for a 4Runner! Better suggestion why not get a Corvette if you want real power. I had one, but needed a 4Runner for Overlanding/Off-road that will last for many many years. Corvette could not do it. David, I am getting tired of your biased propaganda Toyota reporting so you can stay in the good graces of Toyota and the engineering departments. The 5th generation 4Runner is great for overlanding/off-roading and is proven to last many years.The 6th generation has no track record … questionable 4 cylinder engine, terrible tires for off-roading, a battery that takes up valuable space in the trunk, seats that when folded down have a big awkward hump, and doesn’t come close to folding flat, a roof rack that is not full length and for me would needed to be replaced…. My 2024 off road premium with KDSS, rock rails, cameras, Wildpeak All-terrain E rated 10 ply tires is better for my needs and how it was delivered. Also later added a full length roof rack UpTOP overland. All for under $52,000. I am happy!

I bought a 2024 4runner because i didn't care for some of the design changes. 4 cylinder + turbo, backseat space, back seat folding, over reliance on tech, and amd guaranteed higher prices. That being said, it seems like the engine power band will be improved. Hopefully not at the cost of reliability.

No one seems to be mentioning the loss of the GATED shifters. Toyota changed them to a thumb press style. It's easier to shift between gears with the old GATED style, especially when off roading or when it requires your attention elsewhere other than looking down at the shift knob. It may also be harder for people with arthritis to be required to squeeze the button in order to change gears. Just a thought.

I second this. One thing old school I loved about the previous Toyotas is the gated gear housing. Very mechanical feeling and clicks in place. The new airplane style has strong locking sensation too and is probably the best straight line shifter among all makers, it does feel like a plastic toy.

2020 TRD Off Road w/KDSS. I like the Trailhunter package and color. All zooted up, but robust and reliable are my priorities as mine is my long trip and off road 2nd rig. The 2020 really fits the bill well and load capacity/layout too. Niggles with the new. Raised rear floor/load height for the hybrid. Placement of the compressor outlets. Also I have never really driven any turbo that is transparent in driving feel. I like the fact the non hybrid is still more powerful than the 6 but the grill appears to me hideous. Cosmetically the Trailhunter nails it while the Pro not so much and the grill on the non hybrid, at least in the images not a draw. So for mountain bikers or cyclists who haul a bike inside the new may not be a winner sad to say. Even for hauling goods higher up just is a pain. Practical cargo space is paramount in a SUV. So all the driving and modern improvements may not make the new rig a compelling buy if one owns a 5th gen. I can afford one but my priorities are reliable and robust along with practical storage space. That Trailhunter compressor, from what I've seen has it midway forward of the right sidepanel. Not facing the rear, so if one is loaded up, one cannot access the compressor! Just my thoughts. Appreciate the review on the basics and can't wait to see a more detailed update with the real thing.

How big is the fuel tank in the new 4Runner? The new LC has a smallish 17.9 gallon tank. That's a poor 370 mile range based on C/D's mediocre 21 mpg in their 75 mph hwy test. (Grand Cherokee V6 is 500 miles, and 22 mpg.) However, the Lexus GX has a larger 21.1 gallon tank and a more usable 440 mile range. I suspect the LC's smaller tank is due to the battery in the back, so I assume the larger hybrid engine in the new 4Runner has the smaller tank and similarly poor range? Kind of a deal breaker for road trips.

David never drives a 4Runner with KDSS, big difference. It will drive better than the 2025. Hi David!😊. I just heard the 6th gen 4Runner was delayed again. Is this true? As I mentioned before, I got my license nearly 14 years ago, and have had an FJ Cruiser and two 5th gen 4Runners, in that time. I had no intention of buying the 6th gen 4Runner, even before they revealed the new Tacoma. After spending 2 years daily driving a Defender, I knew I wanted a body-on-frame SUV with the off road capabilities of the 4Runner, but with modern luxury and great interior like Land Rover. The GX 550 answered my desires, for something that balances both, perfectly!
@AutomotivePress
@AutomotivePress 2 ай бұрын
You've definitely been a loyal body-on-frame Toyota owner! I agree that no matter how good the unitized body SUVs get, I still prefer the feel of the true body-on-frame SUVs. I'm still planning to buy the GX too, but might delay it now that I have the Land Cruiser... can we take both vehicles (your GX and my LC) out to off-roading courses and do a real comparison? And yes the 6th Gen 4Runner is delayed by at least 3 to 4 months due to parts shortage, could be longer.
@lunamaria1048
@lunamaria1048 2 ай бұрын
@@AutomotivePress There is really no real off road comparison. The LC has an advantage because it has an excellent approach angle, but the GX 550 retains the same bad approach angle as the 460 had. In person it looks like the 550 has a bird beak, when compared next to the LC's nice approach angle. I bought the GX 550 as a daily driver/weekend adventure Defender alternative (not as a 4Runner replacement). Utah has countless miles of easy trails and in the desert trails, breaking down can be fatal, because of heat. I am talking trails that a Rav4 could drive. No crazy rock crawling or technical stuff. Driving it from Utah to Vancouver was fun! I went through Oregon to drive my favorite trail there. The trail can be driven by even a Subaru or Rav4, so nothing very technical. I will not be driving the GX as I drove my previous 4Runner. I sort of have buyers remorse, but we will see how things go. I keep my adventure rigs for years, but I have always been very fickle with daily driver ownership and never keep them long. We will see what happens lol

Thanks David. I'm willing to consider your praises for this 6th Gen, but I'll have to see for myself. You don't drive or review vehicles as someone that is a very experienced off-roader, so your perspective will mostly be valid for those that will use this as an urban SUV with outings to the local gravel roads as their most extreme off-roading situation. Hopefully Toyota gets the pricing correct, with the Trailhunter and TRD Pro number starting with a 5 in the US and a 6 in Canada, all in, fully optioned, and out the door. The chances of that are slim and it is likely that Toyota will do exactly what it has done with every new SUV/truck since the new Tundra, which is to give the consumer more gadgets, less substance, for much more money. It's a great approach especially in North America as our consumers tend to be easy to distract and sway with gimmicks.

David, I'd be curious what the Toyota engineers think about a manual transmission option in the new 4Runner. I had high hopes since I knew it shared a platform and drivetrain with the Tacoma, but was let down when it was announced and appears to be automatic only. I wonder if it's a product/marketing decision, a logistical issue with where it's built, or a technical limitation.

E.g., the 4Runner is always looking for a gear it does not possess (perhaps unless you live in the flats at sea level). 895 lb payload of 2025 4Runner is a dealbreaker. It is much less than the 1625 lb payload of the 2024 4Runner, or the 1411 lb payload of the Land Cruiser. 4 x 175 lb adults leaves just 195 lbs for gear in the new 4Runner. Tow a 6000 lb trailer with a 10% tongue weight leaves just 295 lbs for people and gear. The new 4Runner is certainly sporty but Toyota took the “U” out of this SUV. I wonder what the real reason for the delay. As a parts supplier ($60,000,000 a year) to Toyota and developing vehicles I can’t imagine that now there is a parts shortage. A supplier has a production forecast and it is very detailed and well thought out…several years before launch. Hell or high water you make that schedule to Toyota unless a disaster or Covid pandemic. No excuses!!! What is the real reason the 4Runner is delayed? It is not because high demand over common parts on other vehicles.

The rear seat of Tacoma is too cramped to be useful let alone being comfortable. The comment that tacoma and 4runner would be same is a worrying statement in this regard.

It's really importand how big gaps are between hoods, or doors. Not important plastic bearings and cheep plastics knobs until you will pay to fix them. Go off road and looking for luxury interior? Is someone lost his mind to design and approved this plastic car?

Drove the new Land Cruiser. Its ride was disappointing. Test drove the current Gen 4Runner. Noticeably better ride. Even the seat cushioning felt much better. I wonder if the new 4Runner will ditch that ride comfort?

@@Autotad the LC ride was firm. It was completely tolerable but road bumps the suspension seemed to transfer more than I was expecting into the cabin. The current runner absorbed it much better.

David, why are you informing your viewers that turbo engines require lots of maintenance. And performance will not be significantly better. Reliability will be poor.
@Zenergist
@Zenergist 2 ай бұрын
Turbo engines are inherently more complicated. More failure points, higher temperatures and pressures. It is guaranteed that a turbo charged engine has a higher probability of failure than an identical engine without. It's not a huge gain in power or efficiency relative to the vast increase in complexity.
