Not heat stroke. The man wasn't doing the things necessary to keep his blood flowing upwards to his head while standing still for a prolonged period of time. I spent hours every day standing in formation for ceremonies and training for them, and have seen that happen a number of times. As you settle down to wait for your next command, your blood pressure goes down (like it would if you sat down to watch TV), and so, blood has a harder time reaching your brain, causing you to black out if you don't take steps to keep it flowing. Most people wake up on the ground, once their body doesn't have to struggle to get blood to the brain because they're horizontal. Very rarely will it be heat stroke. Since that IS a possibility, there are usually medical crews ready in the rear to handle those who pass out (at big ceremonies like that, that is).

Nah, thats just a man falling over. Fainting, or falling, at attention is when they stiffen up and just sort of fall forward, flat on their face. Its more common for them to just fall over instead of faint at attention because, I mean, at the moment your heat stroke feels a bit worse than a week docked pay.

I keep on seeing comments about the guards losing their job if they laugh or react to provocations etc from the public. This is untrue - and I mean really, spectacularly, untrue. I spent seven years in the British Army and met quite a few Grenadier Guards whilst in (even still have a friend who completed four years in Queen's Company). These are professional soldiers who've spent a long time just on their basic training. When they're not on ceremonial duties, they are considered to be amongst the best infantry units the British Army has. After spending so much time and money training these guys for their real job, does anybody really believe that the army would just boot them out for smiling at a joke? There are strict rules around what they're allowed/not allowed to do of course (my friend likens the regime they're under to being back in basic) but most transgressions result in the loss of a couple of days pay AT WORST. Rant over. They're allowed to smile/laugh/converse with tourists by the way - they're just not allowed to move without military decorum. Edit: Corrected a brain fart.
