Real Madrid had a season where they had no recognised striker, so Bellingham played a false 9 out of necessity for one season and now every manager thinks he’s no longer capable of being used as an 8, the balance of the team is constantly disrupted due to them trying to shoe horn in Bellingham higher up the pitch, rice + Bellingham in the 8, palmer or foden in the 10, Grealish or Gordon on the left, saka or madueke on the right, Kane or Watkins up top. Whichever player you pick you bench the other, I can’t wrap my head around why managers can’t just go with something balanced like this

With TAA on the left, it helps spread out and actually “balance” the passers who can deliver the ball into the attacking third. Palmer being the number 10, who is also a creative and decisive passer can whip the ball in from the right with his left, and Trent on the left with his right foot. Otherwise, if Trent was on the right, it’ll be a waste and be predictable to have both on the same side. We don’t have great passers on the left either to be honest.

think englands problem on the eye and in terms of their football is their insistence on ball retention, they sacrifice everything to keep the ball, unless something is absolutely nailed on like the first goal they dont make much effort to put the ball in dangerous areas. i watched walker run to the corner of the 18 yard box and instead of crossing and hoping someone gets something on it in the chaos the ball goes all the way back into englands half, england would score far more goals if they were more direct and were comfortable losing the ball sometimes. against better teams england fall down because they concentrate far too much on possession vs creating half chances. england have the quality to nick a few goals in the 6 yard box its kanes bread and butter

The 'problem' is that we have at least 2 options for most positions, and the minute any one has an average game the media proclaims them as 'the answer'; see Kobie Manoo in the summer as an example, compared with the coverage Gomez has had today - whichever is left out they'd be complaints. As for, 'how do you solve left back'? Play a left back there perhaps, or as a minimum someone who can use their left foot - what they REALLY mean is: 'where else can we try and shoe horn Trent into the squad if not right back?' Likewise Micah's Foden obsession - of the current options, based on international form, Foden is a sub at best, likewise Grealish; would you play either of them ahead of Bellingham, or Palmer as a 10? Micah complaining about Palmer being out right ignores the fact that's where he plays for Chelsea, if they want Trent at right back / right of 3 hybrid then they lose the overlap which helps give Palmer space. Likewise if Jude goes to midfield, Palmer would be in the spaces Jude needs. The Nations League games should be when players can be tried out, but whoever becomes manager needs to follow the example of Venables pre Euro 96 - pick a formation & fit the best 11 to it

Gomes fills a profile that Bellingham nor Rice can - so you can't have a midfield two as Bellingham and Rice, against the best teams they're too pedestrian and will get pinned back and run out out passing options. I would go with a 4-3-3 moving to a 2-5-3 in attack TAA - Stones - Guehi - Henry (when fit, until then Konsa) Bellingham - Rice - Mainoo Palmer - Watkins - Maddison Bench - Saka, Foden, Gomes, Solanke, Grealish Goalkeepers pick themselves Frankly how England can take the field without James maddison in the 10 role beyond me.

I think they should have persisted with Maddison as he is the only natural 10 but I would have him behind Saka Watkins Palmer

Micah, shut up. England should be beating these teams 6/7 - 0. What utter nonsense. The sooner the England team accept that they can't just rock up and beat these teams comfortably, the sooner they'll actually win something.

Criticism of Trent is so lazy and boring now, was best player on pitch comfortably even at LB, however Micah is right, play him in his position and call up a LB

Grealish or Palmer for the number 10 spot for me

why does no-one seem to know that substitutes exist - and especially in tournament football, substitutes win games? We should be taking a leaf out of Rugby's playbook. They have a starting XV and a bench of finishers to come on in the second half. It's ridiculous trying to fit all our best players in the starting XI, when we need to ensure we finish a game with a side that's just as strong as the one we start with.

Tell you what guys why Don’t you apply for the England manager’s job? Also shows how much us fans know. Luke shaw? He’s the new sicknote. He can’t be relied on to put on an England shirt if he can’t be fit for Man U. Southgate taking him to the Euros and then playing him in the final as the only left footed left back was an example he learnt nothing from his predecessors of not taking a fully fit player.

Maybe so BUT it does affect our points score towards our World Cup seeding/rank. So it matters.
4-4-2 with TAA and Lewis playing together and only Rice as the only defensive midfielder was way over his head, and honestly quite disrespectful towards the Greece, he got what he deserves.
