By or Until? "I will be there by 5 pm" or "until 5 pm"? What is the difference? In this English lesson, I talk about these two time prepositions, giving many different examples to highlight their meaning. By the time you take the quiz on this grammar lesson, you will know when to use by and until. You can take the quiz here: www.engvid.com...

I was quite perplexed by the difference between by and until before I took your lesson. You explained it really clearly and now I can tell that there are distinct differences between these two words.

Excellent explanation Emma, You teach English very well. Your examples to explain the difference were very simple and easy to understand. Keep working on your videos. You are helping a lot of people around the world. By the way, we can also use the by phrase in the future perfect tense for example: I will have finished my new house by December 2012. As you told Emma by gives the meaning of before or exactly at the specific time.

Both have similar meanings but the second sentence puts more emphasis on the activity. When reading the second sentence, there is a higher probability that the speaker will get their essay done by February as opposed to the speaker in the first sentence. To give more reassurance to your teacher or boss that you will finish the essay, I would use the second sentence. I'm not a grammar expert, but that is how I would differentiate the two sentences.

After thinking a lot, I got one more answer. The word " until " defines a VERB, it belongs to the verb while the word " by " it defines a NOUN. 1. I worked until 7.00 pm - What did i do until 7.00 pm ? - The answer is " worked " its a verb. 2. I need to return my movie by January 12th . - What I have to return by January 12th The answer is " movie " its a NOUN.

Hello Emma. So appreciate your efforts to help educate us. I see people use plural pronouns referring to singular nouns, e.g. Everyone should use their turn signals when turning while operating their cars. The word "everyone" is singular and so I believe it requires a singular pronoun such as his. So, I would say, Everyone should use his turn signals when turning while operating his car. What say you? BTW, you are cute and you do great presentations, Good on ya mate.
