A brand new rosin that is shiny is pretty much next to useless, unless we purposely get a metal workshop file to file or scrape/grate the new hard rosin until lots of powder comes off it, which can then be collected in a small little cup or container. And then we take that powder in our finger etc, and then sprinkle and rub it into the horse hair. And usually it's necessary to rub a heap of it into the new bow hair. The rosin that came with the erhu is just fine. It's just it doesn't come with instructions for preparing it. And, once that rosin has been properly roughed up by a file, then it becomes possible to rub the horse hair along the roughed up area. When the new rosin is smooth like glass -- then rubbing the hair on that slippery surface does pretty much zero.

it is amazing to see you playing Erhu, this video reminds me of my uncle. He is 88 years old and is still playing Erhu. I haven't seen him for two years, whenever I think of him, I always think of him proudly saying he made a new Erhu and performing with it 7 years ago. Thank you for this video and wish you a good journey on playing Erhu!

First time seeing a foreigner play Erhu, thank you introducing from opening the box to the parts that come along with the instrument. I m chinese , I never know much of this instrument though. All I know it is not easy to play it because of the few strings. I played Guzheng about 2 years before. I still want to learn again especially to play the piece, Er Quan Ying Yue, originally played by Erhu

OMG!! With some online tutorial and that's what you got for the first time??? You are amazing!!! I couldn't remember my first erhu lesson cuz it was long long ago when I was 5, but I know it was terrible. You sir, are talented!
This is amazing Joe. My first erhu lesson didn't even progress as much as yours. Quick tip on the your left hand posture : try to loosen up the tension of your hand. I see your left hand was playing like a cello. But erhu doesn't require that much strength that you would need in pressing a cello string. My teacher taught me that the best way to know if your left hand posture is correct, is to make sure the palm of your left hand should have space for an egg. You can achieve that by laying your left arm down like you are not doing anything with your hand. Then you can slowly rise your left arm and hand to the proper height and press the note. Again, don't put much tension on your left hand. Hope you have fun with the erhu !

My erhu teacher taught me that: to sound good, 70% depends on your right hand that control the bow, only 30% depends on how good you use your left hand fingers. So the first thing is learn how to control the bow. Play only the open strings, try with different bow speed, and varies bow pressure on the strings, to find out how you can get a nice/beautiful sound. Hinds is the bow must be move in a straight line, and always lay(in contract or rested) on the body., and constant speed. Good luck.

Joe, do you learn it yourself or follow a teacher? As an erhu teacher who teaches erhu online or offline in UK. I am afraid to tell you that both hands are not doing properly. Left hand is too stiff and the wrist, arm and elbow should be relaxed, flexible and not too loose. The hand position of right hand on the rod is not correct. You should use the curlicue to hold the rod but not clipping it. For further information, we discuss this through email and you can find it in the descriptions of my videos in my channel. Thanks!

Do Re Mi Fa Sol La Ti Do*, among them, Mi and Fa, Ti and Do* are really close to each other on the strings, you need to put the two fingers of those notes right next to each other without any gap in the middle, then you find the right fa and do*.

Sometimes there will be erhu playing. Your sense of music is very strong, not only Western instruments but also Chinese instruments, very similar to Jay Chou's sense of music. Will subscribe to your channel. Looking forward to your set. Wish you all the best😆

@@JoeCreator I also watched 我不是柯桑德 video and followed you after seeing your comments on music. call you 九爷(Jiuye). In Chinese culture, it takes three years for a flute and five years for a Xiao(like clarinet), and an erhu can break your waist. You can only understand it after playing for a lifetime, because it takes a long time to achieve success in erhu, and stringed instruments are relatively more difficult. you have the talent on that. enjoy music and enjoy life.😁

It's pronounced "air-who " or "are-who" (my preferred pronunciation) Er means "two" as in two strings and "hu" a bowed instrument. A two string bowed instrument. A very difficult instrument to master, good luck. It's great that you're this adventurous.

Nice work! You will want to rotate your left hand a bit, so that your thumb is on the side facing you (not on the left) and your purlicue is touching the neck on its left. (Sort of like the violin, the thumb act as an anchor when you need to do shifting) You might want to watch some master Erhu players since it's really hard to describe the posture in words...
