I don't know if people in the west are dumber or what. The Korean SAT is a perfect exam for a highschool student (barring the time constraint, but a 15% increase would make it perfect). All the concepts required for the test are a prerequisite for a college student and that way they won't waste a semester in college polishing their prerequisites. All those who are doubtful about the speaking skills of Koreans, let me tell you that korea is a highly homogeneous country and nobody actually needs to speak English to survive, but they still learn it to make themselves relevant to the global world. All they lack is practice in actually speaking it.

My girlfriend who is Korean often asks me to check her writing when she has to write an email in English. I find she writes in an convoluted way, often incorrectly using pedantic words you'd only hear in academia and not in the real world. Now I'm thinking this is probably why.

But, Your words like 'convoluted', 'pedantic' are also seen academic to me.(Korean) We can't easily classify which words are academic or not. Only recently, I heard English in Korean exam are academic by KZbin or something. In addition, I am not confident of what I'm saying. and maybe, that's the thing most of Koreans experienced. That makes wrong exam continues.

Noah Jung I think the easiest way to explain this is formal and informal. In English we adjust our word terms to fit the situation. In email or casual conversation we use simple terms. Only in report then we use more complicated terms. The easiest way to sound less “academic” is to writer in simple, and shorter sentences. To speak as plainly as possible. I agreed convoluted and pedantic actually rarely used irl either, but needed to be said here because simpler terms doesn’t exist (I don’t think).

@@noahjung2597 that's a good point. When an advanced level of English is taught, I think there should be more focus on grammar and sentence structure, rather than academic style writing. It's not surprising that people who speak English as a first language would find the Korean English exam tough. The questions are convoluted and very long winded. While it is grammatically correct, it's very poorly phrased. No one writes like that...newspaper articles aren't even phrased like that.

I think you'd realise after some time that it's not so much an English test, meant to help students at all in speaking English, as it is a test to see how well you infer meanings and clues within the text to help you. Probably with a life surrounded by academic papers and journals in mind. In my opinion, the skill set the students develop preparing for this test are probably not the most important skill set you want to cultivate in a whole student body. There are other skills and qualities more important for life in society that these students miss out on by the obsessive studying you'd be expected to do.

Korean schools and colleges doesn't have any objective to teach English to the students. If a Korean is speaking good english, then it will be of his/her own effort and not bcs of education system. Exams in Korea will be difficult bcs most of them are pressured by parents and sometimes themselves to get into popular Universities like SNU. Which has made exams very difficult bcs of high demand...

The thing is people do write like that... Researchers, scientists, philosophers and the like. So I think that instead of teaching the students how to speak English, they are teaching them how to write research papers or how to structure their sentences and words like a professional. They are preparing them for a professional scenario, not to talk casually with people. I guess at the age the students do these exams they expect them to already know English pretty well, so they take it further and teach them (or expect them to know) how English is used in a more professional setting.

The reason they make this exam so hard is because the scores determines the grade of each student, which determines which university they can go to. The top grade is consumed of only ~4% of all test takers and are the cream of the crop, they are able to go to the most prestigious universities. So for example if many students were able to get high scores on this exam then there would be chaos in students applying for the top universities with only low passing rates. So it's not like each test-taker is being tested for their own individual intelligence, but they are being tested on how much better they are compared to the other test-takers in the nation.

True. While the tests in its purest form do test someone's knowlege, not intelligence, But if you think about it, being smart alone will not pull someone out from poverty without knowledge.especially in a very fucked up capitalism like south korea where a few people has a chokehold on resources. The system values numbers. And numbers indicate that the system values knowledge more than smart. You just have to be smart enough to utilize your knowledge to keep the system going. The SAT has evolved into something brutal in korea and china. It has become a test that makes students compete against each other for good universities. This also reflects the west in their SAT. If you didn't graduate from a prestigious university, with more and more percentage of the people are getting college educated, employers will resort to filter applicants to only receive those coming from the more prestigious universities. . While the system is hard to beat, this is where smart people are needed. In tge US, you can see it. People from the tech industry in the past 50 years broke away from the system. . But in Korea, smart people are being shoved in the system by the powerful people. They can't fight back at all. That's why there's barely any start up companies in Korea.

Pretty simple really. English has lots of words for the concept that ignorance refers to. 'Ignorance' is one of the most formal of these and in general in the UK people use the less formal words in day to day life, only encountering the more formal versions occasionally in formal settings. Even then there are usually several more formal words that could be used in such settings so you may not encounter one of them. English is a language with hundreds of thousands of words, but only a few thousand of those make up the majority of words spoken each day in the UK. For foreigners trying to understand which words are more formal and which less formal to express a particular thing, in general the more formal variants are derived from Latin or Greek, whilst the less formal are more likely derived from Germanic or Norse roots.

Once my teacher gave us a pop quiz mid class without warning and all the answers were D. I didnt really care about it so i just read it, thought "oh, everything is D." As someone who works in a Korean high school let me just explain. Korean students don't really learn how to speak and understand English. What they learn is actually just memorising paragraphs and basically just spotting the difference between what they've memorised (which is correct) and what is on their test. They don't actually understand what is being said, they rarely do. They just spot grammar mistakes mainly. They're not learning English they're just learning how to memorise and it is so fucking stupid myself and other native English teachers cannot stand to English education system in Korea at all. My high school students can barely tell me why they like a movie if I ask them and they've been studying English since they were 8 or 9. They're now 15-17 and have no idea how to actually have a small conversation in English it's infuriating. I hope one day the Korean education system changes so that the English they study actually becomes useful to the students in some way rather than hindering them and causing them so much stress.

I am an ordinary college student who has been through this curriculum in Korea. To sum up briefly, there are two issues here. First, This exam is “the Scholastic Ability Test”. So many academic terms are used. Second, there’s a sort of ‘unfairness issue’ in this test. To many students in my country, this exam is the most important test. If exam sentences are given in everyday English, students who have studied abroad since childhood have a great advantage. (Rich people can go abroad without financial strain.) in addition to what appears to be superficial, there are many social and cultural problems involved in here. I think there's one thing―exactly “things”―you're mistaken about, in fact many high-scoring students understand what the contents mean exactly, not just memorizing.
@kolviczd6885
@kolviczd6885 4 жыл бұрын
The issue you pointed out here might be true to some extent, for some schools and students, but to say that the whole English education system is based on memorizing and nothing else is surely not true and over exaggeration of the matter.
@smobworld
@smobworld 4 жыл бұрын
@@kolviczd6885 considering that I speak with people across the country on a daily basis (all of us NETs and the majority of us high school teachers) I can confidently say it is the majority of the country with this problem. Another problem I didn't already mention is the fact that we are not allowed to fail students. I had a student who didn't do their english project (a 1 minute presentation on a job they would like - something I learned in my 2nd year studying a foreign language in school) worth 50% of their final grade and refused to do their 1 on 1 oral exam with me worth the other 50% and I was no allowed to give him 0 marks even though it's what he deserved for literally doing nothing. And that problem is also across the board from what I've seen and what I've heard. How can the Korean government brag about the education system and how the country is so educated when it is like this? Of course if you're letting everybody pass with minimum effort the scores will always be good. As with most of South Korea, it's all about keeping face rather than actually benefiting the students. And don't get me wrong I love the country I have enjoyed living here but the education system NEEDS to change. Seriously.
@smobworld
@smobworld 4 жыл бұрын
@@user-kg6md1wn3s the unfairness issue doesn't change though. Because even rich students who don't go abroad can still pay a lot of money to go to 학원s and get private tutoring specifically tailored to the 수능 so they're still getting the advantage because they are wealthy and I have seen exactly that problem in my own school. The high scoring students are usually (not always but mostly) the students who can afford private tutoring in a 학원. I also know someone who has been through the korean education system and is about to start her masters degree and she admitted herself the only reason she did well in school was because her parents had the money to give her a better education than most of her classmates. Which only brings us to further issues regarding students poor health due to spending hours after school in further education and then studying until the very early morning which I have also seen with my own eyes.

Not only that but planes actually can't take off or land for an hour on exam day (at the time when the students are taking the English listening exam). Other weird things: 1. Certain vehicles are banned from driving on the street outside test locations (they're too loud) 2. If you're running late you can call the police to give you a police escort to the exam location 3. Most schools take exam day as a discretionary day off. I teach at a middle school in Korea and we get exam day off every year.

IQ is but a small part of intelligence. Indeed the utility of general intelligence is sometimes understated, but always highly appreciated, even if people don't quite know when it is prevailing. It's quite tragic, honestly, that students are being subjected to such a tense and highly competitive environment that it ruins their mental health. However, the job market in South Korea is highly competitive as well, and having good educational background is an edge. Nowadays though, most companies prefer those with experience so even being a fresh graduate from one of the top universities doesn't guarantee being hired to the best companies.

Not sure about gcse but as a korean who took the SAT and ACT, they were fairly simple, especially the math was middle school level at best. However what was difficult was the college essay. To be honest, I didn't have a dream other than getting into a 'good' college(mind you good college was just name value, I wasn't even sure what major I wanted to be in). When they asked me questions about where do i see myself 10 years down the line...I had an answer but i couldn't compose anything with detail.

I totally disagree. Though the exam seems a bit irrelevant of students' on the surface, in a super-competitive society like South Korea, it is actually a must for the exams to be difficult enough to sort out which students are really the smartest by making the exams super hard. And though it certainly has some drawbacks, it is Korea's 'education fever' that has made Korea the 11th or 12th biggest economy in the world within just several decades literally from the rubble of the Korean War. She just doesn't know the first thing about Korea.

I really liked this episode. I'm glad British youngsters were on the point with what's really important, not just amused with the ridiculousness of the test questions. I grew up in America and when I noticed what kind of words you had to study for TOEFL, my immediate reaction was "What for?" Being able to answer a question with words that English speakers don't speak doesn't really test anything other than the fact that you are a good test taker.

its clearly not for casual communication setting. The question are mostly on professional setting, texts you stumble on scholar paper/data findings/dissertation/graphs findings etc. Personally it helps me a lot with my degrees and work now. If my purpose is to converse then we should certainly look at the speaking/listening test not comprehension test.

True, there are different types of intelligence. Everyone is different. Unfortunately, schools often only emphasize "textbook smarts" and want their students to fit a certain formula. In today's world, I think having "soft skills"/being able to communicate with others is far more important and can get you further in life. So students who think they've "failed" just because they didn't get good marks on these technical exams or didn't get into the best universities should not feel discouraged. Like one of the girls said, there is so much more to you, so much more you can do and have to offer to society than what these tests suggest. Life is not defined by test scores.
