Carmen: a woman ablaze with passion, surrounded by men possessed by obsession and jealousy. One of opera’s most well-known characters sets herself on a road to tragedy when she meets Don José, a corporal in the army searching for love.
ENO favourite Jamie Manton returns to direct Calixto Bieito’s beloved production, exploring the complex relationships between the sexes at the tail-end of Franco’s regime in the 1970s, with Bizet’s searing score, featuring popular opera songs like March of the Toreadors and Habanera, conducted by Kerem Hasan, returning from 2022’s production of Cosí fan tutte.
Ginger Costa-Jackson plays the title role alongside Sean Panikkar, who returns to the role of Don José from the ENO’s 2020 production. Also returning to the ENO are audience favourites Nmon Ford (Escamillo), Sophie Bevan (Micaela) and Keel Watson (Zuniga).
The cast is rounded out by ENO Harewood Artists Benson Wilson, Alexandra Oomens and Innocent Masuku.

February 9th. A memorable evening spent at the magnificent, majestic ColiseumTheatre in London, where I watched with mixed emotions a very different version of the opera Carmen.The orchestra, lead singers and chorus were superb, the clarity of Tenor Mr. Sean Panikker amazing,as for the charismatic Baritone Mr. Nmon Ford, stunning voice, a perfect Escamillo!

The lyrics and the music are meant to blend. The French lyrics are more suited to the music. Some composers wrote different linguistic versions of some of their operas, like Verdi with Don Carlos. But I don't think Bizet did.

the english version lyrics are not a direct translation to the french lyrics, but they keep the same general "idea" of the song -- escamillo bragging

Great voice but ENO hear this: delivering Opera in English doesn't help to make it more accessible at all in fact many listeners will still need subtitles at an average Coliseum show, and the whole thing just sounds so clumsy. It is now the year 2023 maybe it's time to rethink your policy?

I disagree. I love the originals but being able to understand the story without interruption is a real joy. I can also share my love of the music with my child without putting him off because it's too confusing.

I agree, not because I'm French but because I think that the work of a composer with his librettista is unique and that the language has a music of its own. But this singer has a fantastic voice.
