Great video! Did you record this in 8-BIT or 10-BIT 422? I would not want other viewers thinking they can push 8-BIT to the levels you are demonstrating unless it possible without noticeable degrading. I made that mistake with my Sony a6000 and could not figure out why the image was degrading when i pushed things. I now have BMPCC but looking at this GH5 footage make me want one lol.
@TheModernFilmmaker3 жыл бұрын
This is all 8-bit from the GH5. It is a great camera if you use the right techniques but I have also upgraded to the BMPCC6K & URSA 12k. I am in love with the Blackmagic cams but I still recommend the GH5 or S1H to those looking for something smaller

What do you think about LOG in 8bit cameras as a colorist? Worth to have?
@TheModernFilmmaker5 жыл бұрын
You will run into less problems with 10bit but you can definitely grade 8bit. You just wont be able to push it as far. I use 8bit for commercial projects when I have to. The cameras that can do 120fps at 10bit are extremely expensive and just out of my reach at the moment.
@TheModernFilmmaker5 жыл бұрын
The clip of the girl walking out of the room and down the hall way is 8bit. You can kind of tell when I try to raise the shadows the colors of her skin start to fall apart real fast.

That is a tough call!!! I would choose the GH5 over the BMPCC but the Fuji Xt-3 if you also want to take great pictures. If you are just going for video than I would go GH5. Hi Marcel. I noticed that I can not import large file sizes in resolve.... Is there a file size limit? Can it be changed or does free version only support up to a certain file size?
@TheHiveEntertainment5 жыл бұрын
It seems that 10 bit files are restricted in free version ☹️. What I do not understand is.....if I shoot 4k 60fps 10 bit on my Ninja V then it works but the 24p 10 bit files internally on my GH5S is not supported 🙆🏽♂️
@TheModernFilmmaker5 жыл бұрын
I have never ran into this problem. I would grade 10bit from my GH5 on the free version when I had it. Have you tried going into project settings and seeing if the project is set to 10bit? The only other thing I have seen is that Resolve has a hard time playing back native GH5 footage. I will often convert my footage to DN×HR before bringing it into Resolve to get a better response.
@JohnMcConnell-rides2 жыл бұрын
when you say expose to the right you're meaning go more heavy on the highlights side? Is it different than photography where you'd want to underexpose to save your highlights as in is it easier to restore highlights than shadows in video? Thanks

Question slightly off topic ... how do I adjust my screen setting in Davinci Resolve so that I can fit things properly on a laptop screen, while using the colour tab? My scopes and curves (or whatever I'm using) take up way too much space at the bottom of the screen, and consequently the image window is very compressed and small and difficult to work with. The laptop has a 16.5" screen and uses Windows 10. If there some preference/setting I'm missing?
@TheModernFilmmaker5 жыл бұрын
With a 16.5 inch you should have a fair amount of space. What is your desktop resolution set to and is the scaling higher than 100%?
@DarylBaines5 жыл бұрын
@@TheModernFilmmaker Thanks for getting back to me. No, the resolution is 100% (can't take the scaling lower - has only option of 125%) My colour screen shows only 2 "sections" at the bottom - Scopes on the right, and whatever I select to work on on the right; yours has 3 (right, centre, left) - these lower areas occupy half the screen, and so restrict the space available for the image window and node panel. Looking at it again, it's the sections at the bottom which are somehow too large. I can't find any controls for the sizing adjustments to the UI. Any ideas and suggestions would be very welcome.
@tomkaiser4 жыл бұрын
In the exposure exercise for the interview at the end of you video, why did you use a parallel node instead of an outside node to adjust the exposures in the two complementary areas of the shot? Any particular reason or just your way of working?

Did you use 8-bit footage to make a Resolve tutorial? The firat example looks bad still...!?
@TheModernFilmmaker3 жыл бұрын
I sure did, this video is specifically about enhancing the exposure of DSLR cameras(most only shoot in 8bit)... Usually when using a cinema camera with 14-15 stops of dynamic range, there is no reason to enhance exposure. Literally millions of videographer are buying a cheap DSLR and downloading the Free version of Resolve to enhance the footage with color grading. If it were up to me I would use 8k RAW footage from my URSA 12k for every tutorial but most people aren't even using 10bit footage, let alone RAW. 👊✌
@commercialand5 жыл бұрын
I have also been experimenting with picture modes when adjusting my exposure...if I just expose in 1 mode the others look like crap!...and vivid, movie mode seem to be the worse looking. Do you go back and forth between modes until it looks good in all picture modes? this way when watched on any device it should look good on most?? I dont know
@TheModernFilmmaker5 жыл бұрын
What do you mean "Picture Modes"? In camera or in program?
@TheModernFilmmaker5 жыл бұрын
I think I understand, you are saying when you are using your camera, balancing exposure and choosing picture modes... I do not go back and forth. I try to always shoot on the same profile so the coloring process is always consistent based on the camera I am using. Typically I always should in a LOG profile. If LOG is not available than I will shoot on the flattest picture profile that seem like it is capturing the best dynamic range.
