What is a LUT? Simply put, think of it like a filter for your video footage. You apply a LUT to one of your clips and the data inside that LUT immediately color corrects your footage to look a certain way.

Little tip - if you use the same node tree structure all the time - do it once and save it as a Powergrade - then when you start you can just add the powergrade to all your clips at the same time.

@Andresvideo
@Andresvideo 4 жыл бұрын
@@DEADEYESpress you can save it as a still (right click on the image if I remember well, in the color tab) and then you can drag that still from the stills gallery to the power grade gallery. That power grade will be there every time you open Resolve.

Thank you for the kind words, remember though, luts are not essential for color grading. Think of them as a personal taste of putting a digital filter on your footage. Sometimes at first you think its great but you may come back to watch it and realize it looks like crap. Use them sparingly. Maybe turn them down to 10-20% strength.

Thank you for this. finally someone that breaks it down in a simple workflow. One question: If you have multiple footage some shot in a profile some not and you are adding a LUT to all of it, do you apply the colour correction nodes 1st or do you apply the LUT node 1st then work on the colour correction nodes
@JamieFenn
@JamieFenn 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the video, but usually I will add two nodes, and drop a LUT on the second node and make primary corrections on the first node.

Thanks for the very detail tutorial, Jamie! Now I can do color grading easier than before! BTW, I've got stuck at the step: apply grade to other clips -> after select other clips, apply grade -> all the nodes in my edited color grading were gone -> what am i doing wrong? Please advise!

Sounds like you did it backwards. I did that the first time XD And thank you so much I tried to keep it very simple for this first video. Glad you learned a lot!

@@JamieFenn yes, i did all the color things and applied it to the rest clips. So why couldn't we do it? How to fix it? Also, i found out: can copy the color grade as Grab Still and apply it to the rest for more easier! :D

I had the same issue. The problem was which thumbnail / clip i was right clicking on on the timeline to 'apply grade'. So, assuming you have added the extra nodes to the first thumbnail in the timeline. You then left click on the second clip, hold shift and click on the very last clip on the timeline, to select all the other video clips (except the first one). THEN right click on the 1st clip to bring up the menu, select 'Apply Grade' and the nodes created on the first clip will be copied to all the other selected clips! So you;re telling davinci, apply the settings from the first clip to all the other selected clips. Hope this helps, took me a few minutes to figure out.

Brand new to davinci but what is the benefit to creating a bunch of different nodes instead of just doing all the color adjustments under same node. i don't get fancy with the color, just to get it looking right.
@JamieFenn
@JamieFenn 4 жыл бұрын
Flexibility between your adjustments. Also each adjustment affects each other differently depending on which corrections come first in the node tree.
@epontius
@epontius 4 жыл бұрын
You can do a basic correction all in one node, but separating out parts of the grade into their own nodes helps you stay organized and allows you to temporarily turn off or make specific adjustments without impacting other nodes. Serial nodes flow or cascade from one node to the next. For example, if you pushed the image to blue in one node and yellow in the next, the two nodes would end up negating each other and the result is a neutral image again. Nodes allow you to do very specific adjustments.

Are the nodes similar to an adjustment layer in Premiere?
@JamieFenn
@JamieFenn 4 жыл бұрын
Never used premiere so i don't know. Theres an adjustment layer in davinci as well
@jburch5752
@jburch5752 4 жыл бұрын
@@JamieFenn Layers in Premiere is the same concept that you see in Photoshop. Nodes is a different approach to in some respects to do the same thing but they are also use to create special effects. Premier has After effects. Davinci uses notes to achieve the many of the same things without having (in the current versions) to go to an external version. Nodes are actually more flexible but harder to understand. Think of it more as a flow chart of the things you are trying to do. Where layers is like the old projectors with transparencies stacked on top. Also, there are different types of nodes that can give you additional control. Obviously, there is a big learning curve to nodes because they have so many uses.

I recently found out that to apply nodes from one clip (a) to all other clips (b, c, & d) is that you highlight the clips you want to copy the nodes to (b, c, & d) middle mouse click on the highlighted (b, c, & d) then middle mouse click on the single clip (a) you want to copy from.

Hey Jamie, great video! Really helpfull for me as a beginner. I have a question though: Is there a general rule when to apply a lut? I thought you first colour correct the scenes and then apply luts. But you started this process with adding a lut. What are the thoughts behind this? Much love from switzerland
