Hi Marcel, I have a newbie question: how do you compare the advantages of this full-control, complex method, compared to using an X-Rite Colorchecker? I am just wanting to do studio videos in a controlled lighting environment, so I wonder whether this detailed method will be better for me or using an X-Rite Colorchecker?
@TheModernFilmmaker5 жыл бұрын
Hey RT!! This is a great question and I should have mentioned this in the video. The color checker is ALWAYS the most accurate way to white balance in Resolve. I will definitely make a video on this soon... The techniques in this video are just alternatives for run & gun shooting or when you dont have the option for a white balance card and/or colorchecker

Hi Marcel,@@TheModernFilmmaker, I use a Fujifilm camera that has nice film simulations. Also, Canon cameras are meant to have nice out-of-the-camera colors. It seems that if we use an X-Rite colorchecker that the uniqueness of the Fujifilm or Canon colors would be overridden by the Colorchecker? Is that right? Is it true that using a Colorchecker removes the uniqueness of the particular brand of camera being used, and conforms it effectively to the Colorcheck's color scheme? What if we want to maintain the Fujifilm color simulation?

I never knew how beneficial it is to temporarily take the Lum Mix setting to 0. Very cool. This video also helped me to understand how to read a parade scope; most importantly, how to make adjustments while reading it. Thanks!

Marcel - I have been editing for a long time now. I started out with the old CMX and 40 + years ago - worked my way through avid, premiere, & final cut... now as a retired guy I wanted to take my pandemic time and take a look at Resolve. There are couple of guys on KZbin who have a grasp of the program and can teach it. You are defiantly in that group. I like the way you take your time with aspects of the program and fully explain why you are doing what you are doing. Seeing someone so young have an understanding and command of this aspect of the business is reassuring for someone like me who sometimes thinks that the fundamentals of the industry are being set aside by many of the new people coming in. Keep up the good work - I will recommend your channel to those who ask me about who to follow.

Can’t believe 20 minutes flew by so quickly. That was so useful. I watch tonnes of KZbin videos on Davinci and I’d say when it comes to color grading, you are the go-to guy - That right combination of geek and cool. Merry Christmas.

Love the deep dive in white balancing in Resolve. I am glad you showed the different ways to do it. So many times I rely on the sampling a white area of the frame and hoping the program does it for me. I appreciate you going over the correct way to read the values in the parade. Always top notch tutorials Marcel!! Peace!

Careful with moving midtones to balance the parade - midtone mix of the rgb is what makes the color of her blouse the correct color - Like balancing a sky - there is always going to be way more blue in the parade then there will be red or green. I see quite a few tuts out there that new users might find confusing. The white balance you did on the curves looked close to me.

It still shocks to me say this but this is a GH5 mp4 in the Cinelike D profile... Also the screen capture in this video was at 1080 and I upscaled it to 4k for KZbin. Hi Marcel, I just got a A6400, I spent my good amount of time in your and other channel to learn the basics about Davinci and did some nice work with Gorpo footage already. First day with the A6400 I chose to shoot photo and video in raw HLG BT2020 unfortunately when i came back home I realized pretty quick that somehow in all the content I watched i missed the fact that Davinci can't handle ARW sony raw. I tried to convert them in Jpg or DNG before but I don't get anymore the nice flat image you all work with... What am I doing wrong or missing. Sorry for the long question.
@TheModernFilmmaker5 жыл бұрын
I have not worked with ARW. I would love for someone to send me a nice clip(wink wink) so I could dig into it more. Once you turn the video into a DNG sequence you should be able to go into the RAW settings in the color tab and get you image flat again by inputting your footage info into the RAW settings.

awsome. i would have a question why wouldnt we use that lightsource to white balance since it prettey much whiter than the white on the shirt?.
@TheModernFilmmaker5 жыл бұрын
A light source is typically not true white, it's just blown out and has a higher luminance than can be displayed. That is why it looks white but even if the white balance is off the lights that are blown out will still be white.

One more comment... question, actually. What are your thoughts on version 18 studio's Auto Color Balancing feature? You touched on it in another video, but would you consider a video that goes deeper into auto-balance. I have tried it using a splitter/converter node and balancing each of the R, G, and B. That helps a lot in most situations. But there are times when that approach seems to introduce a lot of noise. For me, correcting the noise is OK, as long as there isn't too much of it.
