The Italian Westerns and the soundtracks in it must be the greatest thing in film industry ever in my opinion. You can think that the Old West is an Italian History, not American. Thumbs Up, there´s no words that can describe how much I love Italians Westerns and it´s music!

Spaghetti Westerns are heavily romanticized compared to the material they adapted. Leone the pioneer himself copied Kurosawa's directing manner, and Kurosawa also heavily romanticized Samurai tales, often taking a lot of inspiration from European literature and films. As stated by Andrei Tarkovsky, Kurosawa didn't make historic films, everything was conveniently made up or distorted to fit his whole artistic vision. Same can be applied to Leone and the rest of Spaghetti Western directors. The difference between Spaghetti Western and American Western is the American Western is far more historically authentic due to the directors' better understanding of the culture. Characters would act in a way they would've been back in the day and the kind of the music played are the type you'd find being listened by real cowboys, as opposed to the heroic and extraordinarily brilliant characters and the 60's eclectic art rock music of Spaghetti Western. Compare The Outlaw Josey Wales to Django and RIngo for instance. Such strict rules makes American Western more boring however. I prefer artistic authenticity to historic authenticity and I think we all should do in regard of film making. Therefore a distinction between Historic Western and Spaghetti Western should be made. Of course the Old West is still American history, but the Italians have created their own vision of the West that is artistically superior.

Can anyone believe that this masterpiece is 52 years old? Seems like yesterday & it still gives me major chills & goosebumps down my spine. This musical composition is a timeless classic gem & should be put in a time bottle so that one day future generations would know that they had fearless men. Because we are fearless men!!

I kiss at last the beloved ground of my land, That I left one day with my hard heart full of pain. I have looked in the faces of my old friends, But nobody looked at me as my old friends. And now what happens you must, you must tell me. You must remember who I am. If you see a man with downcast eyes and ragged clothes, Walking through your village, don’t shun him, but go beside. I’m that man, and now, I beg you, help me, I need you. I need you. The liar who told my sweetheart that I was dead, To take my place, he shall pay for this base lie. Those who saw me as a rundown man, Those who tried to destroy all our world, Shall leave forever our beloved land, Because we are fearless men. Because we are fearless men. Because we are fearless men.

The singer is Peter Tevis. He was an American folksinger in the 60s and moved over to Italy to record. He recorded a cover of Woody Guthrie’s Pastures of Plenty with Ennio Morricone. When Moricone meet with Sergio Leone and played him some of his music, Leone thought it sucked and sounded like a Dimitro Tonkin soundtrack. Leone wanted something unique. So Morricone played him Peter Tevis’ cover. “THAT’S IT!” I want that without the singing. Thats what they did and the rest is history. They reissued the Tevis song with the Fistful of Dollars title and it became a hit. Tevis was now in demand and sang a ton of songs for SW.

For those who don't know, on 1 October 2013, Giuliano Gemma died following a car accident near Rome. He was taken to a hospital in Civitavecchia and pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. Two other passengers, a man and his son, were also injured in the accident. May you R.I.P. Mr. Gemma, you were one of my favorite actors. I know they need Ringo up there to keep heaven safe from evil intruders.

My late grandfather Angelo Ruggeri (Italian) was a Sheriff in 1920. He would have told those 60 yellow bellied cowards to start digging. His older brothers brought him to the U.S.A. when he was only a little boy around 6-7 years old. The rest is history as they say. His was a life that was truly incredible. He was a sharp shooter & awfully fast with the gun before he became a lawman, skills that enabled him to stay alive. The famous Italian film director Lino Procacci (a paesano of my grandfather) wanted to make a documentary of his life's journey. Angelo was the stuff that legends are made of. We have a diary & photos back in the homeland that are priceless. R.I.P. my dear grandfather. I miss you & grandmother so much.

Most Spaghetti Westerns were made on low budgets, using inexpensive locales. Many of the stories take place in the semiarid landscapes of the American Southwest and Northern Mexico, so a popular setting was the Tabernas Desert in the Province of Almería in southeastern Spain, at the studios of Texas Hollywood, Mini Hollywood, and Western Leone. Other filming locations used were in central and southern Italy, such as the parks of Valle del Treja (between Rome and Viterbo), the area of Camposecco (next to Camerata Nuova, characterized by a karst topography), the mountains & hills around Castelluccio di Norcia (located in the central region of Umbria, where I used to live) the area around the Gran Sasso (region of Le Marche) mountain, and the Tivoli's quarries and Sardinia.

The origin of the western spaghetti has earlier roots than Sergio Leone. I, as an Italian, was born and raised in the years immediately after the Second World War. I grew up reading Sergio Bonelli's comics, the creator of Tex Willer. Tex Willer, which in my opinion is the biggest comic strip in the world that tells the stories of West America. It is still published today and has not yet lost its beauty.

When I hear this song I envision my late grandfather Angelo who was a Lawman (Sheriff in 1920 U.S.A.) taking down the outlaws when confronted in the streets. Not an easy job, always having to look around not knowing if someone is going to kill you behind your back, without honor. As he was telling me, back in those days fearless men with honor (good or bad) would confront you face to face. Only the cowards would shoot you in the back. It was either them or him. He had to uphold the law, to do the right thing. Because he was a fearless man. Because his posse were fearless men!!
