Hopefully many more discoveries to be found in the future. Lejre is an amazing place, and this one is significant!

@@mariapalmer5671 yes, there is one recently built in Iceland also. I think it's in Reykjavik. It's really cool that they are being built!

The truth is that the first builders constructed the original hall entirely with their own hands... in this they have been honored with absolute authenticity. 🥰🥰🥰

the carved decorations on the pillars inside and around the doors has been cut out by machines and then treated by an expert with authentic tools. This was done to save money.
@darthtaiter4 жыл бұрын
@@LarsAgerbk well, okay then, I amend for the machined decorations, lol. But still, the real effort is really there in trying to do it right, I think the ancestors would be proud to see it.

Would you consider making videos about earlier time periods in Scandinavia? Vendel age or even older like the bronze age? i love this channel!
@Skjalden4 жыл бұрын
At some point I will probably do that, right now its only the video about the golden horns of gallehus that is prior to the Viking Age.

I was in Lejre once. It was very impressive even when they just marked the older hall walls, discoverd in 1977, with stones. Not to forget the huge stone ships with over 80 m. Some historians link the hall with the "Heorot" from the Beowulf Saga. Can´t wait to see the reconstuced new hall.

I hope they take up the traffic light idea in York as it could be used as a way to direct people towards the Jorvik museum. How far is Lejre from Roskilde? I would love to visit Denmark again the last time that I was there was 74 or 75. @ 3:54 the costume that the young lady is wearing is very striking and looks similar to what we consider to be the tradition Dutch ( yes I know the difference) costume. You could consider the colours are the red and white of the Danish flag against a blue sky.
@Skjalden4 жыл бұрын
Lejre is about 10-12 km from Roskilde, so its very close. I think in general people in northern Europe has very similar clothes, probably from the close connections for so many centuries.

@@Skjalden Thanks fo the information. Yes I suppose that many of us are so related through our Germanic ancestry. Hell the English proudly call, what they believe is their pedigree, Anglo-Saxon without realising that the original places that these people came from is not Britain.

3:53 The hall hasn't been painted and I don't think they plan to either
@Tipi_Dan4 жыл бұрын
Right. I checked out the website. The hall pictured here is very nice: cute but rather crude. It is not the hall our host is referring to. The website has only a few pictures of the much larger unpainted hall. The carved dragon heads are ornate, unlike those in this video.

10:55 the vikings did not have horns on their helmets but as far as I know there's a debate to whether they wore helmets at all.
@Skjalden4 жыл бұрын
I also heard that, but personally I do think they wore helmets, or else it would be strange to depict them on the bayeux tapestry with helmets. It is possible that it was only the elite warriors or the wealthy who had the means to buy one, just like the swords.

I could be way off but i thought they excavated battle damaged helmets
@SoulSoundMuisc4 жыл бұрын
I dont know about that. A helmet, even a leather one (which may well not survive being in the ground) is the most important piece of armor after your shield (which is also a weapon). I could see a lot of folk not being able to afford one on their first raid, but getting one or looting one, asap. They also "didn't wear quilted armor" such as a gambison or arming coat, but only because the cloth hasn't been found in graves. Cloth doesn't do so well in the ground. Gambisons and quilted armor get a lot of flak but were actually quite good if you couldn't afford better (if they were trash they wouldn't have survived as armor through the 14th century). TL;DR: maybe they didn't but there's no evidence to strongly support it, or lots of other things, one way or another.

@@user-gq2iw1xj5e its not about a choice between being free and not caring versus road safety and protection from a vehicle accident. Its about: "See that guy? That guy right there? He wants to chop the top of your dome off, Bjorn. You will be fighting him. He WILL try to kill you, while you try to kill him." The two are very different, and while people of that era had a more intimate, and thus probably more cavalier relationship with death and mortality, they weren't suicidally stupid. I didnt say they ALL wore a helmet, either. I didnt even say if it was normal or not because we don't know for sure. Nobody alive today knows for sure. I did say it seemed likely, but I also said I didn't claim to know for certain. Furthermore the remark I made about the Gambison was not about if they wore them on a hot day, or a wet day, or on the ship, or off the ship, or on the march. I said We. Don't. Know. If. They. Had. Them. Seems likely they may have, but We. Don't. Know. Maybe only the wealthy had them, but we don't know. Maybe they were common as mud, or a version of them was. Its anyone's guess.

I wonder where my ancestors (Forest Finns) from Norrbotten were in those days ??
@Tipi_Dan4 жыл бұрын
The (Victorian?) artwork early on in the video depicts Norse people brandishing Celtic leaf-bladed short swords. No, the Vikings didn't have horns on their helmets, but metal horns are known on bronze helmets of the Mediterranean and Nordic Bronze Ages. Horns are attested on at least one Celtic helmet, and decorative metal wings are present on at least one helm from classical antiquity. One wonders if any residual memory of these bygone practices were carried forward into the Viking age, or even into the Renaissance, which influenced Victorian art. One wonders too if some tales of Germanic and Scandinavian peoples might be grounded in stories going all the way back to the Iron Age.
