When I started building boxes, years ago, we learned to subtract the material thickness 3/4" x 2 = 1 1/2" from each O.D. dimension 8.75" x 5.75" x 13.00"x (55.00") to start getting volume!

Works great for a square six sided box, doesn't work well when angled faces and notches come into play. As noted in the video the intent is to APPROXIMATE how much air volume we have to work with and we can then get more specific once we pick our subwoofers and make a real design. my math values for approximation account for typical material displacements. The problem is with the current lack of understanding for many they either A) get subwoofers that will never work properly in the limited space or B) get overwhelmed and just buy a pre-made box. The methods within the video allow for a quick approximation to avoid those issues.

I was taught the same. Also was taught with wedge (truck boxes) to add depth 1 and depth 2 together,divide by 2 to get a average depth. In this example i would add 8.75 to 5.75 divide by 2= 7.25

@@ReEvoluion He specifically stated you need to know an approximate space to decide which subs you can work with, then get specific. If you start with the sub, and it requires more space than you have then you’ll get bad results. You can at least get a rough idea and tweak as you go.

@LAZER MAE, ported boxes will always give you Deeper bass and will need MORE space than a sealed box(Sealed boxes are more for people who want a very punchy and if you have a good amplified aftermarket speaker system). I personally do installs and make custom boxes(always better than a ‘Pre-Fab’ box). All subs have specs on how much space they need for both sealed and ported box(which to dive deeper ,you can Tune your box to the proper amount of Hertz, esp, what your sub performs best at,). I always go with around 33-40 Hertz, anything under 20 hertz is ‘Subsonic and many amps have subsonic filters. So in short,if you want to have rolling thunder, go with ported. Cleaner and punchier bass, then Sealed is for you.

Easiest way to calculate wedge shaped boxes is to add long side and opposite small side together and divide it by 2. That will give u a value equality if that box was square. Use that number as the height then multiply the width and length as normal. Much easier and faster then figuring out a square and a rectangle. Hope that helps someone. Math can be a killer sometimes.

As an owner of a crewcab F-150 I was excited for this video. I ran into all the issues you pointed out. I used the cardboard cutout method but on the framing for the box skeleton. Ended up fiber glassing the bottom and wrapped that up the curved back and towards the front. Then mounted 4 8" shallow mount subs up firing. They lose output lower than 35-40hz but adequate volume from there up. Great video. Can't wait to see what else you do to this truck.

The basic drawing that you're starting with there is essentially what I built for my F150. My box is sealed with 1.1 cu-ft volume, substantial bracing, filleted internal corners, with a single down-firing Rockford Fosgate T1S2-12. And I didn't raise the seats. When you work out the math and geometry, it basically converges on one solution that will maximize vertical clearance (of the driver cone) off the floor. With a 600w JL mono amp driving mine, my truck rocks!

hey guys, I have been adding wood thickness to get I.D. measurement for 30+ years. but lets be honest, most ppl that are going to build a box, already have the sub, and are now trying to make a box for it. which sometimes isn't cosmetically pleasing. my fellow Basshead.s will agree that Spl outweighs the looks. and yes, I too was thinking he forgot about wood thickness. but that's not what mark was doing. he starts with O.D. because cosmetics are his arena. it will look amazing. he can pick different subs, and have room to modify the I.D. if needed. smaller subs can surprise you if done correctly. I blow ppl's minds with my partitioned astro, 2 sundown x6.5.s in a center console I built all the time.

As noted the point here is not to design the full box, but just get a quick approximation. That's why we multiply by .8 to do a quick approximation that accounts for material offsets. The goal here is to get a rough idea which allows us to buy subs and then do a more intricate design later.

Best will always depend on your application. You can get more air volume with forward firing, but are limited to subwoofer size. You can get larger subwoofer size and will need to do a shallow mount subwoofer with downfiring but will lose air volume with the sub being spaced off the floor. While only about a hundred other things factor into this conversation than simply "pick one over the other", give the masses something to actually chew on other than "uh, 'cuz I said so" if you want the message to actually resonate to them. Like the fact that there's more surface area in 4x8"s than there is in 2x12"s. Then again, sometimes what you're going for by "just" wanting the bigger subs isn't the concern... like meeting a spending limit, as buying and powering 4 subs that are adequately comparable to what you'd be able to buy while using "just" 2 subs doesn't usually end up being cost effective. It's unfortunate when people have an idea of what they're talking about but end up not realizing they could stand to learn something from whom they're talking about. But I do like the irony of talking about someone else's mindset while not being able to interpret thier perspective.

Good luck with that. I'm struggling with having a single 10" in the back of a 2dr JK, hung on the tailgate facing forward AND have carry space left over. But I guess if you modify the rear seat and fit shallow mount subs it might work, a lot of work though. The rear seat in the JK detaches in a breeze, but might not have enough space even into the seat to securely fit subs. P.S. BMW X3 E83 have dual 8" shallow mount woofers under the front seats in relatively small enclosures acting as subs, might try to DIY something similar.

I have a sedan with my 12 inch in the boot/trunk, my middle rear seat fold forward leaving an opening into the boot/trunk. Should i have that open or closed for louder bass and why? Will it make a difference and why? Thanks
@RAW_Reality
@RAW_Reality 3 жыл бұрын
Leaving it open will be one less (major) thing between you and the sound, so that question pretty much answers itself. Though it won't be "louder" so much as it'll just not be filtered through your seats as much, so it'll give the impression that it is. Furthermore, a sealed enclosure won't tonally change much, but with a ported one you might notice a slight tuning difference between open and closed.

Why not up fire? With some shallow 12s... I've had greater results up fire in ford's without any seat lifts or the encloser having a larger depth then the seat. I'd also use the speaker bar grills in tight places that just protects the sub from the weight of the passengers.

The rear seat relocation kits from LMI Welding are very helpful in getting a larger box under the rear seats to accommodate more or deeper subs. @@CarAudioFabrication yes, I agree and you did state for close approximations but didnt mention to keep driver displacement in mind .
