Entanglement Too Strong For Rescue Hook

Although this was not the most pleasant way to free this baby seal from his entanglement, now he is free and we hope he doesn’t get himself in such trouble again. Tony managed to pull the double-looped fishing line off the seal. Without our intervention, once a seal gets stuck in such a loop, it becomes a ticking time bomb.

Little pup thought he would hang out with the big boys. Perhaps they told him where to nap so he could get rid of his double looped death necklace. His little cry for help was pitiful but the help that Tony provided saved his life. Well done Tony and well done puppy! 👍🌊💙

I think that was actually a seal. I was trying to figure out if it was a shadow I was seeing, but they were in the shade, and it looked like it was a seal when he got closer.

Yes, it is a sharp hook with a round edge on the outside. We replaced it since then, but a double-looped fishing line will unfortunately always be difficult to cut.

Time to sharpen the hook| If you had attempted this maneuver on a larger seal, the animal might have pulled the whole hook and rod assembly from your hands and escaped into the harbor with it still attached to the seal. The consequences for the seal would be serious. Good save though, in this instance.

it didn't break the line, but it did pull off the line, and that was good. i was thinking, if you gave the hook a quick hard snap on the line, it would have removed. is the hook good and sharp? the good thing is. it was another successful rescue👍👍

These seals don't seem to see the hook on your pole as an extension of the human/rescuer so they're not threatened. That area seems to be a sanctuary to them so they don't get as restless.

That is right, they do not see the hook as a threat if it is moved very slowly. Antoine actually only pushes the hook when the target closes his eyes, like a green light red light game 🙂
