Having read most of Brian’s work I agree with your opinion of just throwing it out! Besides ignoring the encyclopedia he also disregards Frank final scene with the old man and old woman literally saying they are face dancers! Not thinking machines! Apparently there was a floppy disk outlining Dune 7 in Frank’s safe, what I wouldn’t give to read that.

Brian is that kid son who sees $$$$ in his dad’s legacy and capitalized on it, BADLY.. it’s like son inherited a restaurant where people loved his dads cooking and kind service and then he comes in and serves them instant ramen and frozen foods and charged same price or more with high school kids’ rude service instead of hiring professional or putting in the time, heart and thought into replicating or make it close to and keeping what he inherited. What Brian and Kevin did to Daniel and Marty - two characters that came across to me in Chapterhouse as SO powerful, insidious, and unfathomably dangerous (and all from JUST a couple of brief encounters and one VERY close call with them), that I was GENUINELY afraid for all our heroes on the no-ship and what these two Face Dancers from The Scattering Era might be capable of doing to them if they were to get their hands on them! They were SO CREEPY and fucking terrifying because of how LITTLE was revealed about them. Frank knew EXACTLY how to reveal ONLY enough about them to make them seem like a credible threat, and NO MORE after that. He used RESTRAINT (a word Brian and Kevin clearly aren't nearly familiar enough with...), and damn do Daniel and Marty feel threatening... But oh no, that's obviously TOO good of an idea for Brian and Kevin to know how to write effectively for... so how can they idiotize it and turn it stupid enough for two fuckwits like them to write for? Preferably in a way which not only takes a big, steamy shite ALL OVER his dad's original vision and the DECADES-LONG blueballs brought on by Chapterhouse's cliffhanger ending, but does it in a way which ALSO shamelessly refers back that any of their festering, bloated, rabid hippo of a prequel series... "...OH I KNOW! Daniel and Marty can ACTUALLY be the AI characters Omnius and Erasmus, from the WORST three Dune prequel books to yet be written at that time (little did I know, however, just how often they'd manage to outdo THAT little achievement with EACH BOOK CONTINUING TO SUCK MORE ASS THAN THE LAST >_< )! I don't think someone with a true love of the original material would've written so many other books pertaining to it. Seems like what an uncreative hack that had a beloved IP dropped into his lap would do. His writing style was not my cup of tea and his blasphemic work on the Dune series was enough for me so I never even looked to see if he's written anything that wasn't handed to him, decent or otherwise. Again just my opinion. Thank the sky mage Frank finished all that he did on his Magnum opus. Any reader's life is all the better for it.

I own a copy of The Dune Encyclopedia and have read a large part of it. I consider it canon as Frank Herbert gave his approval of it. It was a fascinating read to me as I learned more of the background history of that universe. The list of the emperors of House Corrino was especially fascinating to me. I still have not read all of the Dune Chronicles yet though, God Emperor of Dune being the last one I finished. Looking forward to the new movie too.

I think the movie explains the characters and the setting pretty well. I don't think you need to know any lore before watching the movie. I've never read Dune or watched anything related to Dune before but the movie was easy to understand in my opinion. I guess it couldn't hurt to dive into some backstory before watching the film, as long as it's before the first book. People who are fans of the books say that the movie was actually really good adaptation.

Also as a fan of both Dune and WH40k which i read Dune first i might add, it was really funny seeing how much WH40k influenced or straight up took from Dune and Dune Encyclopedia. Even though several writers of 40k cited their love and inspiration from Dune in couple occasions, it is a lot worse case than Star Wars'. Edit: Face Dancers are the direct inspiration to Faceless Men in ASOIAF, one of the couple.

There are a few memorable authors I will always cherish: Frank Herbert, Asimov, William Gibson. I can read these books multiple times and find interesting insights. Especially considering current issues. I agree there are others and I have read most of those. But, these three really got to me. Dune addresses issues that are now a hot agenda. Gibson with his books seems now right around the corner. Asimov is a giant IMO. How can anybody think like that and be relevant so far in the future?

But in my opinion his son and the co-author do a pretty good job rounding out and finishing up the story. And the prequels aren't too bad either. You can go in expecting Frank's writing and then being upset that it's not, you know what I mean? There's a lot of people that cannot stand his son's writings but I enjoy them for what they are and I like the fact I was able to finally finish the story. My two cents.

Leto II. has memories going back to ancient Greece of the Atreides family; but as the battle of Corrin was where the Empire was basically forged it stands to reason, that the newly crowned Emperor gave thiefdoms to loyal supporters and granted their families these as inheritance and elevated them to noble Houses, sitting in the Laandsrad.

The "Dune" universe, as imagined by F. Herbert, is consistently complex and reverential to the various entities that combine to make up the political, philosophical, and practical dynamics that make this vision work across the five novels in the series. The final installment, "Chapterhouse Dune", is a satisfying conclusion to the story that began in "Dune" the first novel. The fact that Chapterhouse doesn't end by destroying the backdrop in which all of the actions transpire could've been the basis for a new series of tales set in the future described by Herbert senior. Herbert junior, however, rejects that opportunity to instead attempt what amounts to a rewriting of the entire universe itself. The approach taken by Brian and Kevin could've produced some engaging and enlightening narratives that remained faithful to the original premises set up by the father. Instead, they succumbed to the commercial lure of hastily written and unrelated scenarios that simply do not adhere to the logical events that the original demanded. The younger writing team's accounts of the preliminary history that would've resulted in the setting for Dune lack any credible internal logic or reasoning. Where Herbert seniors universe was immense and involved numerous planets, offshoots of humanity and reasonable accommodations to the realities imposed by the religious and political dynamics we are given, the son's storytelling is stilted, limited, and detailed only to the extent necessary to justify each separate novel with little to no consideration given to the impact they would have on the other novels they'd written. The preliminary timeline then becomes a confusing and inconsistent history of events that were meant to provide a context for the Dune narratives.

A good bit of of this work was ripped off for the Warhammer 40k universe. Its interesting how Dune has failed to become as popular as it deserves, yet derivates from it have gone to make multimillion dollar franchises. TBH I find the universe lore far more interesting than the conflict portrayed and the drama. When you have so much universe and only focus on a single event, albeit one that affects said universe immensely, it kind of doesn't have the oomph. If they bothered to show the wide implications it creates then maybe it would. We get told a lot happens yet so little is shown. There is so much to explore, I thank you for the video for illuminating so much of what makes the Duneverse interesting for me. It makes for an awesome RPG setting, I think I might run one using the Starfinder system.

@@JakeTheBake998 Yes indeed WH is a rip off of Dune, yet Dune was not the one that became a phenomenon. Such is the way with so many things, like 7 Samurai and Magnificent 7. Eitheway, I've been reading a ton more of the Duneverse stuff. I love it.

Umm dude, Herbert himself in the encyclopedia's intro said that while he gave it his approval, he retained the right to do what he wanted with his own story, even if it contradicted the encyclopedia. Herbert: "As the first Dune fan, I give this encyclopedia my delighted approval, although I hold my own counsel on some of the issues still to be explored as the Chronicles unfold." Considering the encyclopedia was published BEFORE Herbert finished the books in his lifetime, he deviated from it as he continued the series. So, no, Brian was not beholden to use McNelly's book at all. He used his father's notes for his books (so he says). While the encyclopedia is fantastic and a great read, it is NOT canon.

It seems to me that in writing science fiction, if one wants the freedom of imagining whatever types of technology and cultures while still keeping the basis of civilization here on Earth/Terra, to go as far into the future as possible is the way to go. If you were to stay relatively near-future, say less than five to ten thousand years, you are constricted by the viability or believability of advancement from where we are now and you would be faced with more validations needed and explanations to resolve than you would if you just assume natural evolution over an extreme amount of time.

I prefer the expanded timeline tbh: Right after the jihad, there was a combined effort to strengthen the human mind to compensate for the ban on technology. This led to the formation of various institutions, such as Mentats, Bene Gesserits, Navigators etc. It was realistic because there was an immediate desire to try and minimise the loss with the prohibition on thinking machines. In the older timeline, there was a 2000 YEARS gap between the Butlerian Jihad to the creation of the Mentat order. That is an impossibly long time and frankly ludicrous.

Frank Herbert's dates are canon. While Brian Herbert had some decent books, he kept falling into silly tropes. In Brian Herbert's books there was not a single celebration or family event which did not devolve into the Red Wedding on steroids. One or two blood bathes would be ok, but every Wedding or future equivalent of First Communions and Bar Mitzvahs? Simply eyerolling preposterous.

Long slow tube world flights (10k population flying in ecosystem for centuries), or fast flights with a lot of risks at the beginning and the end of travels. Computers and Guild suppress risks.

Dune is kind of like a Narcos in Space, your houses of Atreidres (I before E except after C) and Harkonnen are like the cartels, the Emperor and his Sardaukar the special police and military and the various mentors and advisors the Lawyers brokering all of the deals. Then the Fremen with their blue in blue eyes thrown in to act as the Vikings because that series was also good. Forgot, the narcotic being the Merangue, but in the film they never showed how it was Ingested.

I cant wait for the movie, but still nervous. Dune is *so damn deep, an influence on *everything "we" like that followed in some form or fashion in terms of fantasy and science fiction. And the topics covered, Political Intrigue, Prophecy, our relationship with drugs, Sociology, Ecology, Technology, the rise and fall of civilizations, religion....smh religion. Puts so much in perspective. I can go on forever. And so steeped in "real" history and social patterns flawlessly incorporated into their "universe"...greatest "world building" effort I've ever seen...pardon. *Read. Lol. Very hard to adapt to films because its such a sprawling creation that is dependent on *all its parts to get the full import of the series. I just hope it can go long enough to get to God Emperor, the Sci-Fi series was great but stopped just short of my favorite installment. That fictional series changed my world view, I still quote it several times a week, lol.

The water of Arrakis was 'walled off' by the sandworms' vectors described as 'sandtrout' ..... it was not absorbed, therefore the water of Arrakis could not be seen on the surface but there was water available, hope this helps. PS: Water is deadly to the adult worms but not to the vectors!

I like how you I put up that painting of Alexander the Great! I also noticed u mentioned a character a name of "The Great" as the painting of Alexander was up on screen. That was dope and for a person who is obsessed with ancient history and Alexander the Great being the greatest man to ever live in my opinion, I really enjoyed seeing that. I've been excited for the Upcoming dune movie. I never seen any of the older films or read any of the books. But I love A song of ice and fire and Star wars so many times dune came up. And the KZbin channels I watch alot on A song of ice and fire, the creators. mentioned dune alot like Quinns ideas and some others so I heard about the film being made before I even knew what it was and looked into it and planned on reading it and still do, just havent started yet. Dune is pretty much my most anticipated film. It looks wild. And I've read things from the people who got to see it for a test screening and enjoyed it and the new trailer blew me away.
