There was a case many years ago where a juror attempted to get out of jury duty for the same reason but the judge didn't drag the employer into court. The juror was fired from his job and had served three weeks of jury duty for a longer than average trial. Then when the the judge dismissed the jury he said something flippant to the judge about losing his job. The judge was annoyed but asked further and the juror told him that his boss told him to lie or do whatever it takes to get out of jury duty just like in this video. The judge ordered the police to investigate and the end result was the employer was arrested and charged with jury tampering and was found guilty and sentenced to three years in prison and did 18 months. Then that original judge referred the juror to a lawyer who sued the employer for back pay and the juror ended up getting a year's wages out of the deal and the business ended up going out of business. The employer in this video is lucky he didn't go to prison.

One time, I received a jury duty summons. I didn't know about it until I discovered it in a pile of old mail the year after. I live with my grandmother and I have ADHD + Aspergers Syndrome. I've always had difficulty getting my grandmother to open her mail, inform me of any mail addressed to me, figure out what mail is important, sort it out, and toss all the garbage when it's done. Apparently she had called the court clerk and informed them that I wasn't mentally capable of being on a jury and had never mentioned this to me until I asked about it in a panic after discovering the letter. Ever since then, I have gone to get the mail every day, or nearly every day, and I sort it with her, keeping all of mine and squaring it away quickly, and letting her do whatever she needs with her own (which is usually just letting it pile up). This was about 8 years ago and I've never received a summons since then, which is relieving to say the least.

I know those things are auto generated from the voter rolls, but come on...they couldn't program it to look at the address and reject out of state ones. I had a chuckle with the shit or get off the pot. That was what my husband said when he proposed. We dated for nine and a half years. He is an engineer and is very single minded. He said he did not get a ring because he expected me to choose what I wanted. Told me what my budget was and told me have at it. I did not choose a diamond. I wanted an Emerald because he is Irish and I can get jealous. The jeweler advised me not such a good choice as I do dogs and horses and it is a 7.5 maybe 8 on a very good day. She asked me what my favorite color was and I said red. Two weeks later she calls me and says come to the store at noon. When I was walking down the street to her shop a limo pulled up with two HUGE men and a little tiny guy with two briefcases. We walked in at the same time. My jeweler locked the door behind us. We went back to her office. The man opened the two cases and stood back. She told me shut up and pick one. I did. She only charged me for my budget. The rest was my wedding gift. Lots of lessons here! I had a boss like the idiot in the last story. Worked at a hospital and 3 of the 4 managers i had to deal with were stupid like that. Save a nickel and blow a thousand. I warned them more than once what was going to happen if they continued in that vein. One of them decided to retaliate for the very private and softly worded warning that if she continued throwing out profit for high non paying numbers that she would bankrupt the department. She refused to let me talk to insurance companies, insisting that it was a clerical job not seeming to comprehend that the precertification could not possibly provide the clinical information that the insurance company needed to approve an unusual request. So patient is left untreated and we don't see the revenue for a much needed procedure. I could go on, but what's the point. I left on medical leave after she very publicly accused me of drug use and failed to very publicly announce that i passed all of the drug tests. I called her bluff and made it a physician based decision as to when i should return to work. Knowing the story, and i didn't need to add to the tale she was so blatantly obvious in her tactics, the doctor walked very very slowly signing me off to return to work. In the meantime? Because of the fear based management, the remarkably incompetent decisions 3 of the 4 steps to the top, the hospital went belly up - bankrupt - within a year. She still works there though not over that department. She/they lost 100% of their most competent staff and patients now go elsewhere. I am always amazed at how people risk their company with high school level cliques and distrust and the good employees are under utilized or short lived but their buddies are still there clogging up the works.

I know MC isn't always supposed to make the OP look good, but just to be clear as to what happened in story 1, the BF said something because culture expects him to and because of that the worker (AKA OP) guilted him into paying as much as possible (most of which goes to the owners of the business)?

Is this a surprise or something. Bosses always threaten your job when you cant work usually. Regardless of the reason. Jury duty or voting. Too many people still don't know that's actually illegal. But too many bosses actually get away with it too. Of course, they won't put in their records that they fired you because you performed your civic duties. lol. They will make up some other reason or pick something out that happened way in the past. Or set you up by telling you you are off but then changing the schedule and saying you have too many absences lol. It's always a way for them to get what they want.
@LeScratch893 жыл бұрын
It's totally legal in most of the US to fire someone for taking time off to vote, and of course there's always the 'we don't want you anymore, get out' excuse to get around the illegal firings. It's on the former employee to prove it and it's basically impossible to prove if the employer isn't a complete dumbass.

oh that reminds me when my work gave my attendance infractions for being on jury duty instead of work. OH boy they had a bad day with a phone call from the county clerk to the corporate office. was in the office discussing it with them, turned into an argument because they tried to pull a fast one, said I could of been at work because it was in the morning. But because here in my state its illegal to work the night before jury duty. BOY they got a lovely phone call. store manager was sweating when his market AND regional rained down on him about the supervisor and the personal person. Lets just say his bad day was nothing compared to what he gave those 2. I had 6 jury duty dates all 6 I got infraction pointed, despite providing all documentation that I needed to give for proof that I attended jury duty. Everything was done to the note. From the proper call log under jury duty, to a copy of the letter proving my JD dates. best part is when the supervisor tried to lie, and everything was in fact in my file and copies in my digital file with corporate, hell they brought copies proving it was there.

It seems to be my off day, cannot really fathom what happened in story 1. Can someone clarify? The young man said he pays, the waiter treats him as if he would pay, and then the father of the girl pays. I´m lost. Is the point to humiliate the young man?
@erikrungemadsen20813 жыл бұрын
The young man said he would order for the whole table, you don't do that unless you are paying, and normally you would allow people to chose what they want, kid basically emasculated his father-in-law and treated the entire table as children.

Mark Thank you for a very humorous video. I couldn't help but 😆 at all the stupidity in these stories Ì worked for an idiot but to be fair he treated everyone the same. Including berating his wife in front of me which I thought was inappropriate. To be fair to his wife (a very nice person who I wondered how she'd put up with him) she didn't do anything wrong because the very next day she complied with his instructions from her previous dressing down. He took her to task completely saying the opposite of what he'd told her how to handle the same situation. I even had a couple of his clients state the only reason they were doing business with him was he was cheaper than the competition and they thought he was an idiot because he acted like such a bigshot.

In the US if you do jury duty the first day or three days is paid by the court #50./a day, and after that if unemployed or retired, the same $50./day, other wise your current employer must pay you regulat salary or wages40 hr./week.

Pup314 - the two times I had jury duty (the last was about 10 - 15 years ago) I was paid $8 per day by the court. Would have been really nice to get $50. 😊

Story 5: I understand how you might find that stupid and unreasonable. But for most business (at least in the U.S.), wean you finish early it just means they don’t have to pay you for the full day, or can pile on more work than you wear hired for. Hired to clean the garage and finish early, guess that means you have time to do the shed to.

There's no way that bartender story happened and if it did there's no way he kept his job. There's no way an owner is going to take them wasting product and dirtying the bar because some a****** didn't want ice.

I work IT and I don’t really buy that computer one. A missing software update is a security concern and policy settings on our end may prevent you from connecting to company programs etc, but replacing a computer takes maybe an hour and you’ll get a crappy temp device to use in the meantime. For the life of me I don’t understand this possibly taking a week to resolve.

Legally your boss has to pay you for your time serving jury duty, at least in the US. It's less than minimum wage but it's still some money per hour of jury duty that they must pay you.

Another way - put a small amount of apple cider vinegar or fruit juice in a cup, cover the top with plastic wrap and poke one very small hole in it, just big enough for them to get in. They’ll go for the liquid and won’t be able to get out of the cup.
