I really wish I could have learned German as a child. My grandfather was from Germany, but he died when I was a baby. I did take a semester in college. I transferred to another college after that and wanted to take more, but they only had Spanish and French, so I took a couple of semesters of French. The professor was horrible! He was from France, and if your accent wasn't the same as his, he took points off your grade. I have some hearing problems due to an inner ear disorder. We had these tapes we had to listen to for our tests. They were almost impossible to understand if you had good hearing! Other people in the class complained about them as well. But to "help" me, he turned the volume up. It made them worse. I had Spanish in high school for a couple of years. That's the only language I've really conversed in other than English. One day, I want to really work on it. I didn't know until too late that my grandmother was fluent in Spanish. My grandparents had been missionaries to South America. From what I understand, my grandmother was the first white woman to visit some of the tribes.

My DIL thanks her grandparents all the time because they taught her Spanish (one set of gp from Mexico) and Italian (the other set from Italy) so she speaks English, Spanish and Italian and is also fluent in ASL. In my case, I'm in a VERY fortunate situation when it comes to languages. I belong to a Swedish-speaking Finn minority, so right off the bat I have learned Swedish, Finnish and English in school, with some years studying German, French and Spanish too (not that I can speak those fluently though). And by knowing Swedish and German, I also understand Dutch, Danish, Norwegian and a tiiiny bit of Icelandic. I feel like I'm in the middle of the "language pot" here, and I feel really privileged. My next challenge would probably be slavic languages. I can read Cyrillic but do not understand it :D

The bit on not speaking english well is something I sympathize with there for a lot of people. I've learned some of a handfull of languages. However, there are some specific groups who I've heard with some extreme views on german specifically. There is one jewish family nearby that will throw a fit about the german language and will take some kind of crazy steps to not buy anything they can at all connected to german companies, and I only found that out when they went off about an Aldi's opening nearby.

In turn I make sure I speak at a more reasonable speed, not my mile a minute, and am more conscious of enunciation so they can better understand me. I am jealous of those who can speak more than one language, and need to buckle down to learn the languages I want to.

So this woman in story 3 thought the donation was per hour so they made their kid work double the hours than intended to further the amount given. I mean if the amount was 10 per hour, and she works an extra 8 hours... that is literal financial manipulation. If someone said x per hour, they probably only thought it would be for x time not x doubled. She should feel ashamed for trying to manipulate the people with the same pay as her to give her the money for a 2,000 trip.

I found a poem about learning languages that really puts it into perspective. It is called "To Learn A Language" and was written by Shirley Kawahara, with a translation into English by Douglas Petherbridge.. I discovered this poem hanging above the copier in my university anthropology office, which was delightful because Shirley was my grade 4 teacher at Fort Chambly School in Germany. Sometimes I think that growing up as the "other" in a foreign country was the greatest blessing I could have had. I am not threatened by people speaking a different language, because I was immersed in that as a kid. I am not fearful of the "other" because I had been that "other". Beyond that, a language is a precious job skill. All things being equal between two candidates for a position, the one who speaks multiple languages will probably get the job.

One time I volunteered for “haircuts for the homeless”. But it got fairly bad at work, until I had enough and flatly told my coworkers that the topic was closed and I didn’t care what they thought about it. Story 3 made me think of this wholesome story. It’s true that fundraising at public schools really helps out a lot of the kids go on trips like science camp and other field trips. I did some volunteer work a few years ago at an elementary school in my area. The older kids had gone to science camp but since it was a school with a lot of low income families, the school covered for many students and had gone into debt. It was about $1,500 total if I remember right, that wasn’t even for 10% of the grade! Our volunteer group spent some time doing fundraising of our own and we were able to raise $1,600 by the time our volunteer week ended! Let me tell you, when we gave that money to the school’s principal she was in *tears*! The best part? We didn’t have to extort any of that money! 🤣

You can always expose a person's intentions by literally complying with what they claim to need, only for them to realize you are not going to actually hand them over your cash

1st story: press harrassment charges against them all and get security cameras with night vision and audio. Maybe even go to the media about it. If your friends think that you should take care of him because of matching dna despite what they're doing, then cut them off Edit: agree, get a damn good lawyer

These people that don't like Germans because we fought them in WWII should talk with people that actually went thru it. Most of the German army didnt want to fight for the Germans. They did it to save their families lives.

I'd tell them I am willing to help but I'd have to deliver the money in person and speak to them at their homes and after they give me the address I'd confirm it and arrange to blow out every window on all of their homes! Hahahahaha literally no joke, every single one of them involved with the threats of "that's just the beginning" would endure immense property damage and financial loss, maybe even physical too!

I call my son’s father a sperm donor too. I didn’t realize other people’s fathers were referred to the same way. I thought I was the only one. TIL...

My favorite response has always been: I am a single parent too and get no child support. I don't try to make my coworkers support my sh*ty taste in men.

Ah yes, school fundraisers. I'd rather give money than buy shit I have absolutely no use for. And as a grandparent I get hit up with as many as 4-5 at a time from all my grandchildren looking at me expectantly. 🙄

Story 1: I'd be willing to bet money on sperm donar at the very least being some kind of sociopath or narcissist. He never cared about op he just wanted the money, which is why he barely even bothered to "come crawling back" because he assumed he could just do what he usually does to get what he wants Story 2: This is definitely one of my favorite "they didn't know I knew the language" comeback stories I've heard, good on op for sticking up to the couple! Story 3: That awkward moment when you don't fully understand how your sign-up sheet works and now you have to learn "the hard way" that you can't actually scam people into giving more than they agreed to XD Story 4: ngl I wasn't fully paying attention to this story, but as a chronically indecisive person, the level of wishy-washyness I *did* pay attention to was incredibly unprofessional of that one company. Good on them for being able to find someone new lol

I find it funny that his reasoning for the kids starving is that they can not get a job while he supposedly spent the money on putting them in college. There are so many obvious lies in his story. For the story about languages, I have tried many times to learn a new language but have come to realize I have some sort of learning disability in that regard. I think highly of those that know multiple languages.

STORY 1 OP NTA No child owes their parents an income unless the child wants to. He knocked out all the windows of the Mother's house and said this was only the beginning? Does OP have that in writing? That is extortion and extortion is a felony if OP lives in the US. OP should call the police and press charges not just for the damages but for the extortion itself. OP owes nothing to an extortionist.

1st story: even without the harassment, vandalism, threats, and (essentially) blackmail, OP should just ask his sperm donor "why would you want help from a geek anyway? You made it clear I'm no son of your's because I'm a nerd, and all my money/success is a direct result of me being a geek/nerd. Ask your "real sons" for help."

Story 1) Cut those toxic people out and maybe make better friends. I hate people who try to encourage you to interact with abusive family members. Story 2) I am so jealous. Wish I had been there. That's priceless. Story 3) Uuuugh, hate people like this. Hope the kid grows up better than the Mother. That woman is entitled. The only one I feel bad for IS the child. Story 4) Ooooo, boy. That's some professional revenge right there. Not nuclear, not petty, but utterly professional. There should be a subreddit full of this style of revenge. I know that I would love to see it. (Edit for updates)

Story 1: god this hit far too close to home for my liking... i had a similar situation with my dad but unlike OP i was decisive with excommunicating him, he was cheating on my mom consistently for as long as i could remember and even after he got exposed by a local radio station for impregnating the family maid and my mom still begrudgingly forgave him, no more than a few weeks her started cheating on her again. on top of that he was very publicly vocal about how he only raised me and my brother to be his golden goose by taking over my moms business so he could get rid of her (he actually said that to my face) so we spared no expense at rebelling against his master plan by dropping out of the college course he wanted and studying animation and game development instead. that crushed his pride a lot so after we did that he tried countless times to be rid of us, except that he couldnt because he knew my brother would literally kill him if he tried. and eventually after a very long time we managed to get rid of him. unfortunately we gave him 100,000$ in the process to leave us alone, which didnt happen since he tried to play the victim a few years later to get monetary support from us. we rejected him, he turned hostile, tried to ruin our business and defame us, it escalated to a lawsuit against him ending with a restraining order, a bunch of paperwork, and the ability to deport him if we so wished. because he has an open case against him he cant escape to another country now like he did in his home country for tax evasion (long before my time) so we messed up his plan-b badly.

At first I wondered why the entitled employees in the last story didn't all just quit, but the more I thought about it they likely realized that if they did no other company would put up with their brown nosing and kick them to the curb.
