The grandma from this first story is a literal ANGEL. She defended her granddaughter and kicked out her own daughter because the toxic mom assumed that her daughter wanted to get married to a literal stranger! someone give that grandma a Nobel prize.

It's old school Chinese culture how it works is simple you live at home and take care of your parents until you get married and back then the marriage usually happen whether you wanted it or not yes some parents would accept refusals however nine out of ten of them did not

given how the grandma speaks cantonese, it's southern chinese culture. Coming from the canton region, this is considered extremely old-styled and you traditionally live with your parents until marriage and it's norm, but this is incredibly rude cos even in the old days (like, really old days) daughters still get to refuse a matchup attempt from their parents

That first one.. wow! The fact that the mother tried to "marry off the daughter" the way she did tells me that the grandmother put her granddaughter in the will as owner of the house and the mother was trying to get her out of the way.

As a person who grew up in East Asia of mixed decent with a Cantonese mom who is Total Alpha and not shy to be, well, Cantonese (loud, proud, and not gonna sugar-coat it) I KNOW what is this mindset: Mom wants the kid to marry to have grand kids who can be doted on and told to do better than their parents and take care of grandma when they are older. It can be playful or negative, and in this case really, REALLY Negative. My mom has locked two of my siblings out before, but it was because their behavior was a LEGAL danger to the rest of her kids. She is mid sixties and not slowing down. Even my eldest brother who looks down on my parents for their life choices has to acknowledge they gave him the tools to succeed.

I am not at all familiar with the Cantonese family dynamic, but I can imagine how what you described can get toxic pretty darned quick. But what this mother did is far beyond what I would imagine would be even an "ordinary" level of toxicity. And apparently OP's grandmother agreed that the mother's actions were beyond the pale.

Story 2: A tip for conflict like these in life: Don't focus on their initial reaction but focus more on their long term reaction. A lot of times, they might blow up at you not because of your decision, but because of the stress that takes over when they realize that they have to figure it out quickly. It doesn't make it right but a lot of times, after the facts settle in their minds and their emotions dies down, they would realize your side of things and can start respecting your choices.

Story 4: you can teach another language without using a “government sanctioned” propaganda book. You want daughter to know/understand her heritage; great, that doesn’t mean it’s completely bias free and truthful (what grandma is ‘teaching’ her). Welcome to America; here the parents have final day about their kids (up to a certain age). OP needs to stop being passive/accommodating and be firm; her/husbands home so their rules apply, not the grandparents!

1st story: there are 3 things that make no sense. 1. The mom changed the locks before the marriage meeting. Who did she expect OP to stay with before she had even met the husband to be. 2. Why did the mom want to kick out her own daughter and not her mother? Why did she not discuss it with the other adult in the house at all? If she changed the locks, how did the grandma get back in? If the grandma had the right to kick out the mom, was it her house and not the mom's? if she was living with her own mom at age 50 or something, why was having her own daughter at home (in a house that she was not the owner of) such a problem? 3. There is obviously no dad so why was it so important the OP get married when it was not important that the mom be married. All of these are easily explained by the idea that in that culture being unmarried is a problem and once the mom had a kid she had accomplished her job of "being married for a while" but my questions are more rhetorical. The point is that if the mom had any common sense, she would've addressed the situation differently.

About the teaching Chinese Story: my hunch is that the parents themselves have grown during the Cultural Revolution in China (which the propaganda was at its peak, you can't make such things up) and might've hard- wired with this thing since childhood (ratting out on your own parents due to non- conforming ideas was encouraged back then and these weren't isolated cases) so I can see why she's using a governmental propaganda. Don't forget that the PRC still indoctrinate its population to this day (there's a belief that China wouldn't exist without the CPP, which is nonsense) and it has gotten more extreme since Winnie the Pooh came into power. The mother is right to worry and should stay vigilant.

It sounds like it's more of an issue with OP's mother taking issue with her than a cultural thing to me. Like, the OP's mother wasn't pushing the marriage because of tradition, she was using the tradition to try and force OP out of her own mother's home. The way she preemptively changed the locks is proof of this IMO. I'd say there might be some kind of issue with OP'a mother being concerned with inheritance, or something like that. Like maybe she's worried that if her mother passed away before OP gets married and moves out, she'll leave everything to OP instead of her. Either that or she just really dislikes OP and wants her gone for some other reason that we cant pick up on from what little info OP left about her relationship with her mother.

Well this bogus arranged marriage behavior actually happens in the US too. Sometimes it's foreigners who brought their customs with them. Or it could be some local religious hidden polygamy communities, (some not so hidden)where teen girls,(or preteens)are forced to marry men twice, sometimes three times her age. She may not know the man. Or he could also be a relative, such as a cousin or uncle. In some instances, the husband could end up in prison, but that's usually if the girl escapes, and/or presses charges. At least this girl was 20. She can legally marry at that age. But why would she want to, and to a guy approaching 30? It's possible her mother was offered money. She could have been trying to sell her daughter into marriage. She still should have discussed it with all parties involved instead of the sneaky way she went about it.

He started messaging me often, which is okay, whatever, but just 2 days ago, when he says bye, he says "love you" at the end. Ok on the first story I might be weird but I feel bad for the guy in the first story. No doubt the mom talked with them for months to set it up because they had all sorts of arrangements and he thought he was going to walk away with a wife that I'm guessing he liked to be willing to be married to her without meeting her only to be told it was a lie by the mom and walked away with nothing after spending all that effort, time and possibly if the family had put any arrangements in it might have been paying for some stuff already that they could not get refunded for. So that'd be really bad. As for the only with the mom concerned about the daughter being fed propaganda I would learn Chinese or whatever she is teaching your daughter fast or have a translation app on hand and listen to what she is teaching your daughter. If the mom keeps reading propaganda to your daughter I'd threaten your husband to either make him stop or leave him and take the girl cause I don't care what it is for no child needs to be read propaganda especially at that age The husband's like well, she'll be smart enough to see it. No propaganda's design to literally confuse and manipulate a mind into believing something and a child is far more likely to succumb to that than an adult. And if taught that early on, it'd be much harder to remove any sort of brainwashing from said propaganda, which I think is the goal from the mother-in-law

I am a person that is born and bred in Asia. People, need to know that arranged marriages are rare nowadays, in East and Southeast Asia, especially in the urban areas as they are frowned upon by younger people and some elderly. But rural area will have some arrange marriages here and there but the attitude towards it's also beginning to shift. And basically nowadays, instead of arranged marriages. Parents opt for partner examination. Basically, wether or not they accept the partner that their child bring back home. If you are accepted by the parents you will have no troubles. And if you aren't accepted. Rest to sure you have to pull everything single trick to swindle them over. But they are always involved in wedding plannings. Like the western countries.

Story #3 Here's my opinion (as someone who wasn't there and doesn't know the whole story) Your girlfriend should've talked to you about it beforehand and made sure you were OK with her meeting her ex. But I don't think she cheated or had malicious intent for the meet. You said that you guys had a big fight once before over something similar, so maybe she just really felt like she needed the closure, assumed you would tell her no she's not allowed, and maybe that's why she lied about it? I mean she did still move over seas to be with you and uproot her entire life. I mean that's one hell of a risk and someone who wasn't loyal or didn't truly want to be with you wouldn't do that right? So I feel like she is loyal and does want to be with you, and maybe she was just worried about javing another bad fight over something that didn't need a huge fight. And again maybe she just felt that she really did need that closure from her ex, or maybe one thing she said to him was that he needed to let her go and leave her alone because she's happy with you. Again, not sure because I wasn't there, but those are the vibes I was getting and idk if you should end a good relationship because of 1 mistake. She shouldn't have lied to you about that (which is the mistake, along with the foreshadowing) but other than that it does sound like this is a good relationship

From what I am understanding about the first story, the Mother is Antiquated where the Grandmother is with the times. Cantonese is a Chinese dialect. It is usually the elders that are trying to marry off the children. However, after listening to this story, the mother trying to get the daughter out didn’t even have the right to do so. The house belonged to grandmother, as SHE kicked the mother out without question or formality. I would have made her pay me to have the locks changed again.

I listened to the whole story. It sounds like they are potentially imagrants or expats from the Chinese area of Asia given the grandmother switching languages to Cantonese. I don't know a ton about this culture, but from what I have gathered, it seems like more family members including the kids tend to be involved in the process and sometimes a third party is involved to ensure a good match/do background checks. My sources on that are some social studies units I took in school and interviews I watched of people who are in an arranged marriage, so take it with a grain (or maybe even a block) of salt

I couldnt comment on the video so I am commenting here: I just finished the second year of uni. And I was in the buss going home. There was an old lady there and she wanted me to sit with her. I cant say no and I find old people sweet because my grandparents from my mom side are really really sweet and most of the elder people Ive meet have been really polite. So I decited to sit beside her. I sat at the window side and oh boy this was my biggest mistake. I should have just putted my headphones on and stayed at my seat. She started asking me about my age.what school do i do and normal stuffs. I told her ill turn 23 soon. (I know this sound stoopid but forgot I was gonna turn 22 soon not 23😂) It was cool until she asked me if I had a boyfriend. I told her I dont have a boyfriend and I didn't had a plan on finding one before finishing Uni. I swear to god my patience was really big at that time because the moment she started to talk abut her oldest son she didnt shutted until we arrived in at the destination. I was so annyed by her that I stopped even before the bus would go to the final stop but it wasnt a big problem since It was close anw. She keept insisting for me to marry her son. She told me her son was 40 smth years old and he had 2 kids one was 12 or 13 i cant remember and the other one was 8 or 9 something like that, and he had divorced the wife. I politely keep telling her that I dont want to marry your son and not only me but also the kids would feel uncomfortable if i married their father i also told her that he is literaly 20+ years oler that me and for me it wasnt ok at all. But she kept insisting and kept telling me examples of couples that have a large age difference to which I replyed, I am sorry for expressing myself like that but If a person jumps from a cliff does it mean that I have to? Of course she ignored me and kept insisting on me marrying her son, she even wanted my number but I wasnt crazy to give it to her. Like bruh I have never been in a relationship and you want me to marry you 40 smth years old son? on top of that with 2 kids? This is really wtf. So shortly she keept telling me those bullshits on how it was ok to marry someone older and how lucky I was to marry her son, that i shouldnt let this luck to get away from my hands. Also I learned that she knew my mother, while my mom was young and used to work since she is the oldest in the family. At the end she gave the name of her daugher that lived where I did and told me if i changed my mind to contact her and told me to tell my mom about this. Yeah like I would. The moment I got home I told mom everything about this woman and she told me that Yeah she knew her and she was mentally ill. Well I guess everything made sense then lol.

He's right you need to let them know that you're not going to be doing this for the rest of your life because if you don't stop it now you'll be doing this maybe 25-30 years down the road

Story 3 okay… hmm okay, I can understand her need for closure. Past relationships without closure are like stains that can have a detrimental impact on current ones. The lying about everything on the other hand was very wrong but is it possible OP that the reason she might’ve not been more forthcoming is because she was scared you’d feel hurt, jealous, angry and unsure if your relationship exactly like you are right now and panicked and once the lying started she was in so deep now due to the first one that she kept going? I mean it doesn’t by any means make it right but if you an can look back on your relationship a few years down the road and identify this as the worst thing she ever did in your relationship then you still can probably call this a good relationship. Nobody is perfect, mistakes and bad choices will be made. But she literally crossed oceans for you! To be willing to cross oceans for someone is an old expression meaning you’re dedicated to them, she ACTUALLY DID IT! I think to throw something like that away would be a big mistake almost as big as oh I don’t know, lying in a panic to avoid making your lover jealous and digging yourself deeper and deeper into the hole when you should be setting yourself free with the truth. A mistake like that.

Story 3: Commitment. Thats the problem here. If she shows commitment in a clear way, then everything would end up well. Of course the guy seems a little to much paranoid because she would object the moving or just stay there, but she wanted to move with him instead and also willing to come clear. Often people try to downplay situations to make it less stressful because they don't want to burden the other person with their own problems... plus OP knew how much of a prick and annoying the ex was. So for her, she had to deal with it in a blunt way by herself or god knows what the guy might do if she keep ignoring him as well. For this i suggest both to take therapy as well, because his insecurities from been cheated on the past and her trying to deal all by herself is not healthy at all for both. They need to rely on each other if they want make it works.

Story 1: Umm..... I'm pretty sure that they are Chinese, and unfortunately there are still people that think sons over daughter, and that the daughter should be married off as soon as possible, it's sad but that's the mentality of the old generations it's gotten better but there are still people that think like that

Story1: For anyone who is asking what the mother will get, lets just say certain cultures give big dowry to the bride family (yep like selling at a pricetag). Usually, i said "usually" family will use a part of the money to pay off the marriage event and leave the rest to the bride. Unfortunately in most cases, the money used to get a bride or house for their sons. Why older men (30-50+years old) (meaning rich divorcee, rich widower, rich single men with problems like handicaps or with children, if lucky enough old normal and kind rich single guys that have been concentrating building business and now wants to build a family). The family then can continue to leech off their now married daughter by saying if weren't for them, she won't taste the life of rich people. Thats why some parents came to take the now their adult children that were given to relatives or their grandparents to raise just so the now adult children that already have jobs can give them some money or the parents can marry them off to their choices. Unfortunately most Asian children had to be fillial to be their parents as the society, cultural, religions or (in China) court law forced upon them.

In regards to the third story, i don't think that this is a deal breaker at all. Yes, she did lie about how she met him, but the reason behind the meeting is on the up and up. Plus, she is offering multiple ways to further prove this. I think he should stick it out, but they should agree there should be no more lies, no matter how small they are. In regards to the fourth story, yikes. The MIL needs to back right off of the daughter, i really don't like how she is basically trying to convert her into a Chinese national. Not to mention the full on propaganda, thats stepping way over the line. As for the fifth story, holy shit. She needs to find a new room mate ASAP in the worst way. If he ever managed to pull her into a relationship with him, he would instantly start cutting her off from the rest of her friend groups completely. This guy is beyond toxic.

You are always so quick to tell people to break up with someone. 3rd story - I can understand what the woman is going through. She still cared for her ex and wanted to end things with him in a positive yet final way. Yeah, she lied to her new boyfriend, but it really was a sticky situation for her. She met up with her ex to finally end it all. Her new boyfriend sounds very insecure, and she probably knew that and didn't want to burden him with all the emotions she was going through. She wanted to move on with her new life, but now she's stuck in the middle.

OP doesnt sound insecure. Insecure would be if there was no proof (solid or circumstantial) for his stance. He is not saying she cheated. He is saying she lied to him in a way that fundamentally breaks a core aspect of their relationship. That really is cause for reevaluation of the relationship. As for the gf. I understand she wanted closure. However, she could of done so in a way that not only ensured her bf was okay with it but to where she ended up getting what she needed. However, she now got closure on her ex and is possibly about to be stranded if OP leaves her.

I felt like his reaction to finding out she met up with the ex might be why she lied. He had no reason to think at first that she was lying about anything, but was getting bent out of shape because she didn't text back for a few hours. Then she did text him immediately to tell him they met up and had coffee. But he's still mad that she didn't tell him first. If he reacts like that all the time, I can understand why she lied about it until after the fact.
