Dragons' Den

4 жыл бұрын

Peter gave short shrift to the Henry that entered the Den with an illuminating pitch for his smartbulb invention, 'EasyBulb.' The tech entrepreneur is asking for £75K in exchange for 10% stake in his business. Despite Peter Jones' skepticisim, Henry is standing his ground and is hoping to prove the Dragons wrong.
Season 12, Episode 7.
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

Don't like entering a different room/ going downstairs in the dark? Turn the lights on before you get there. Getting home later than expected and you live in a dodgy neighbourhood? You can make it look like you're at home and watching TV. My favourite use is when I'm going to the shops after work and the Mr has been too busy playing counterstrike for the last few hours to answer his phone, as soon as I start flashing the light I get his attention.

Their point is always the same. They are not claiming his product won't sell, or that he won't make some money. They are investors - they're looking for a business that will grow, so that their stake they have purchased will increase in value. There is no way this business can do this, as the SECOND it starts gaining traction and sales the big names like Phillips will up their marketing of the product and kill it. quite easily, as you are getting a much much larger package for your money. If you broke down all the individual categories the other company offers and got them individually through different companies it would end up being more then their overall package. However if you are just looking for a light bulb then obviously this checks the box. But this product is not new, its not innovative and there are global companies using this in their ranges. Hes just a guy trying to grab crumbs out of that market. I work in Aquatics and every mid/high end lighting fixture uses LEDS controlled on apps via their own wifi signal. This guys product uses a wifi box controller while their are devices which use their own signals and security etc. Its a terrible product to invest in.
@halsoy
@halsoy 4 жыл бұрын
It's not that simple though. He claimed that your entire house could be automated for 800 pounds. Now take 20 pounds and multiply it with the number of light sockets you have and see what it adds up to. And that's still just your lights. Then the question becomes what part of those 800 are just lights.

“Market is not moving backwards” I’m starting to question peters intelligence there wasn’t much led bulbs that can be controlled with your phone and WiFi back then.... so how is it moving backwards
@kecukraftwork1988
@kecukraftwork1988 4 жыл бұрын
From an economic point of view, it wasn't moving backwards, since WiFi bulbs hadn't reached as much public interest back then as they have today. It wasn't a stagnant market either, but it was hard to enter without being in direct competition with a giant like Phillips, who jumped aboard earlier on in its concept. But from a technological point of view, Peter was 100% on the mark in saying it was old tech; since multi-device apps (that control your heating, lights, security, etc.) already existed before this episode originally aired. Peter and the other Dragons likely already knew from the get-go that Phillips had cornered this market at the time, and that cheaper alternatives were inevitably on the way. This guy was so clueless that he wasn't even aware of such massive competition, and claimed he could make cheaper alternatives to Phillips, while using a copy of Phillips' tech - it would have been terrible business to have invested in him.

In the U.S. a couple years ago smart light bulbs were very popular especially with the introduction of Alexa and Apple home. Right now what’s really big are the LED strip lights. What Peter missed here was the younger demographic. Teens don’t have the money to buy the fancy electrical equipment used to put these in an entire house. Also that’s something the parents would do not the teens. So most teens right now are very much into these light bulbs and the LED lights. Also most kids don’t care if the lights are made from Phillips or if they are the cheapest on the market. As long as they are the first ones to pop up on Amazon when they search for them those are the ones they purchase.

Peter didn't miss anything. His and Deborah's points were ultimately that the tech already exists and is already being sold by established companies. There was absolutely nothing about "his" bulb that did anything different. And even to your point about the younger generation just going with whatever the first search result they find on Amazon or Google, who do you think is gonna pop up? The larger companies with more money to spend on marketing. Not this guy. He's gonna be further down the page.
