I've never really thought to start my own business but understanding different strategies of entry can not only help me grow in my career but also maybe take that next step into starting a side hustle or hobby to generate more income. Thank you, Dr.Yang, for breaking down the Pros and cons of each of these methods, these make a lot of sense now, interesting to realize that franchising has its disadvantages because when you think more about business internationally you would believe it to be a good thing. However, in real-time I have seen franchises fail due to international places causing a downfall in quality.

I was previously only aware of franchising and licensing practices; I might've had an idea of what the other practices were, however never fully understood them. I have seen a smaller scale of smaller companies transferring ownership to larger companies, but seeing examples of larger scales of this brought to my awareness the gravitude of this practice. At larger scales, more is at risk. An example is a pallet producing company we work with that had been their own company for years, including when we met them. However, they sold their company to a larger company. This has opened their customer list, as well as tremendously relieved them of financial burdens. For us, who are a small business, this was good because of the previous relationship they had, we were able to keep a higher than market deal at the moment of acquisition.

It was fascinating to learn about all the strategies a company can implement to expand to a foreign market. It is interesting how the decision on which strategy to take varies by industry, like how fast food and hotel chains tend to franchise and oil companies use the turnkey strategy. I noticed that each strategy depends on the company's available resources, how much risk they are willing to take on, and the amount/strength of competition in the market.

I think this video is interesting because I did not really know there was a difference between licensing and franchising, and thought it was just all together. However, franchises does not have to worry that much about manufacturing and they also don’t have much control of the quality of their franchise because there are so many, this can be seen when we go to hotels, or even restrictions and wonder why the same businesses may not have the same reviews from customers.

It is really interesting to see the different aspects of how companies team up together in different markets. The Volvo cars & Uber example reminded me of the accident their car had. Unfortunately for Uber, it seems they were the ones widely blamed for the accident, especially in traditional media. Thank you for the informative lesson. I always thought of turnkey production as wholly owned subsidiary. I see now there is an important distinction between the two. A pure play turnkey operation is where the contractor is responsible for the design of the facility and the machines used in the facility. On the other hand a pure and wholly owned subsidiary is where the parent company is responsible for the design and machines in the plant. In practice I like to think it's a mixture of the two... the parent company contracting out the building of the facility and describing how they want the facility to operate and what machines they will want/need.

There are so many different entry strategies a company can do to try to move into a new or foreign market. One thing that I am familiar with is the franchising strategy. I worked for Whataburger which has a lot of franchising involved with the brand. But it is crazy to see Mcdonalds using the franchising strategy as well internationally. It is very low risk and you can see Mcdonalds all over the world, and I'm sure they are making a ton of money off of it as well. Whatever strategy a company chooses is all based on many different circumstances as well as assessing the advantages and risks.

A very informative video! I found it interesting that firms overpay for acquisitions, although that seems like a somewhat subjective concept. For instance, perhaps the 'acquisitionee' sells for more than they are valued, but how much money was saved by the acquirer by acquiring instead of building from the ground up? I'm also curious to find some examples of instances where firms overpayed. Thank you!
