In this video I present a full photogrammetry workflow where I captured a cliff rock fromation and turned it into a vista prop using photogrammetry.
In details I am going to show:
- cliff rock formation capture with the Mavic 2 Pro drone
- an image postprocessing with a different to usual way for ambient shadow removal in PhotoLab 3
- a full 3D reconstruction in Agisoft Metashape using new reconstruction mode
- I will build a new low poly topology in ZBrush
- which I am going to UV map with the RizomUV
- I will bake textures with the Substance Designer
- next I am going to cover missing and fix broken areas in Substance Painter
- and finally I am going to compose a quick scene in Marmoset Toolbag to present the result
You can find this video with resources used in this video on my gumroad:
gum.co/fHNAW
I hope someone finds this video interesting and fun to watch
If you like it and want to see even more like this one, please subsribe to my channel and leave the thumbs up.
Big thanks for your support,
Cheers!

At 16m31s, if you hit "no" when it asks you if you want to replace default model, it'll allow you to keep *both* your original high poly and your decimated mesh within the same chunk. This also works great with the new beta features that allow you to bake normals and AO.

@@jz-xq4vx Hey Jeremy, its a very good idea and as soon I have some more time I will do it with pleasure. But I would say that tools are just tools, what I have learnt is that they change all the time.. and what matters and what has a real value is a real, deep knowledge about the subject and basic knowledge about all optional tools available to be able to pick the right one for the job. So everything I do I would consider just as a guide, something I do to show an idea. As a 3D modeler for example I can tell you that it doesnt matter what software I use as long I know why and what I do. You can learn any software within a week .. master it within a month. What matters is around it:) as regarding the toolong.. it is usually just the matter of interface and differences algorithm details used to process certain operation. So if you capture images correctly you can use any photogrammetry reconstruction software and it will do the job .. or even more.. you can use it in a totally different ways to create awesome things.. it is soemthing I am planning to show soon. So in my perfect video I prefer to tell 'why' instead just 'how' if you know what I mean and this is the direction I am trying to move. Because everyone can follow the steps.. but if you understand the direction, you can choose your own.. sometimes even better path. I think a good example is the video about crosspolarisation... I still want to make another one with even deeper knowledge and a few more real examples so everyone knows why it doesnt work very well when we use light tent or a few different light sources.. and with this knowlege and understanding to be able to build a setup which works even with a few different light sources etc. :). This is why it takes me so much time to make a single video as before I show anything I do a lot of research and experiment a lot to make sure I am right.. and even tho sometimes I am still wrong :D

Thanks. I was flying manually, its would be to risky to fly the drone so close to the cliff wall while wind is pushing it towards it from the back :) as even if sensors detects collision and stop it, the drone wont move back by itself. I used standard DJI App to fly which is called DJI Go 4.

@GrzegorzBaranArt
@GrzegorzBaranArt 2 жыл бұрын
Sure, Metashape is much cheaper - you pay once $179 for Standard version and you get perpetual license with all future updates and full functionality without any limits.. as far as I understand until 1.9 at least. So I purchased mine 5 years ago and didnt spent a single penny after. The results Metashape provides are at the same level as Reality Capture. There are datasets where Metashape gives better result and some where Reality Capture is better. If I would need to score both apps I would score them both at the similar level. Reality Capture used to be much faster and handled heavier datasets but thats not the case anymore after 1.6.1 version was introduced. I believe that Reality Capture is still faster but not as much as it used to be. I was planning to make a comparison video but I dropped the idea after they were acquired by Epic. I still might at some point each app has some pros and cons worth to share. Basically, Metashape is way cheaper option in long term while provides reliable and very high quality results :)

Thank you so much, One last question please, Which is better Metashape 1.6.0 Or REALITYCAPTURE 2018 Version?
@GrzegorzBaranArt
@GrzegorzBaranArt 4 жыл бұрын
Do you mean 1 year old RC? I think Metashape 1.6.2 :) . .especially that new reconstruction algorithm was introduced in 1.6.0 .. the one which is the subject of this video. The reconstruction took me so long in this case due to a bug - which should be fixed in 1.6.2. Metashape is really great if you know what you do. sometimes it needs to play with options . .especially for alignment. As I said.. this is the top software.. they are really close.. a few months of development on this field makes the difference .. and Agisoft pushed reality capture really far with the 1.6.0. Of course you will get a lot of annoying thigs.. hard to solve issues.. weird behaviours.. but you will get them with any such sophisticated type of software. But.. I would recommend try both as I dont know how are you planning to use it.. maybe camera you use isnt supported by the software.. in this case it might not even read your RAW files and might make your workflow more complicated etc?

Thanks for another great tutorial! To confirm the DJI drone captures in .DNG raw correct...NOT jpg? That's how you can push the shadow removal so far? Also thoughts on 3DZeyphr? I've had good luck with smaller project but wonder compared to Metashape.
@GrzegorzBaranArt
@GrzegorzBaranArt 4 жыл бұрын
You are welcome :) and thanks for watching. And yeah, Mavid 2 Pro has option to capture in DNG and JPEG. I use DNG since as I mentioned in my video.. it gives you way more data to work on. Also reconstruction software fully utilises this information for reconstruction and image alignment. This additional data makes a lot of difference, we cant see it since our computer screens can preview maximum just about 8bits of it .. and its even slightly less in reality but Metashape or RC see full dynamic range and use 100% of it if available. I dont know if 3DZeyphr does it tho. A year ago every photogrammetry software I know were using just 8 bits for reconstruction, the change to use reach color depth were introduced a couple of months ago to RC and recently to Metashape (since 1.6 as far as I remember). Hope that makes sense, cheers!

🔥Need Your Help🔥 Hello Mr.Baran, I have a very important question, I have Purchased your Photogrammetry Pbr texture tutorial and I watched also a lot of your tutorials, I didnt understand something, Why you make lowpoly model of highpoly model, second thing can I import the exported high poly model from Metashape directly to Substance designer without making lowpoly model So then I can extract(bake) Pbr textures, Third thing why you always make low poly as a plane you put on the highpoly and directly export it, Isn't the lowpoly supposed to be lower poly count than the highpoly. Waiting for your answer. Thank you
@GrzegorzBaranArt
@GrzegorzBaranArt 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Ben, a lowpoly model is a kind of 3D canvas used to project the information from the highpoly model. So lowpoly model position in 3D space relative to the highpoly model is very important. It is a bit like using a paper stencil with pattern to spray the wall with the graffiti. It has to be aligned with the wall you want to paint.. otherwise you will spray the empty space. The UV mapping on lowpoly is also important as it designates how the highpoly data is going to be positioned on a final texture when baked down into it. When I position the lowpolt plane on model.. I do it to make sure it is aligned the same way in 3D space.. but I dont export both models.. I export just the lowpoly model as the highpoly was already exported after reconstruction. When yuu bake data you bring two separate files for baking.. one with the lowpoly model.. and one with the highpoly model. There is not file which contains both. So since these are different file you need to make that models are placed within same coordinates in 3D space, otherwise you wont bake anything. Hope it makes sense, if not, feel free to ask deeper, I am always happy to help. And big thanks for purchsasing my ebook :). Cheers!

@@MohammadJarrah2016 No probs, I would use Substance Painter to remove seams from all channels with one go. I covered this in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2G3koWYqapnrrc The problem with seam removal in Photoshop is that that the result cannot be previewed easily and Photoshop itself isnt a good tool for this job. This is why nowadays everyone use Painter instead. But if I would really have to do it in Photoshop and have no other option I guess I would use a mask for it and apply it to all layers representing PBR channels. When done I would export each layer representing channel as a separate texture.

Wow, this is a great video! I was wondering though, how much is Metashape limited by system RAM? At the moment I use Meshroom on a machine with 16GB of RAM and it struggles to generate meshes of over 2mil polys. I was wondering whether investing in metashape would allow me to get more detailed results from the amount of memory?
@GrzegorzBaranArt
@GrzegorzBaranArt 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks a lot :) I think a Metashape shouldnt havcea big problems with even 60mln dense poly mesh, what eats memory is the reconstruction algotirhm. So if you go into full 3D Arbitrary reconstruction with Dense CLoud as a source with over 100 images .. 16GB wont be enough. But if you use a new mode I present in this video 16GB should be enough. TO make sure I would suggest to get a trial and have it tested. Since version 1.6.0 resource management for Aribitrary mode based on Depth Maps as a source has changed and was imtpoved. 16 GB of RAM is a limit for a new out-of-core mesh implementation, however, some steps may still require additional RAM. For example, dense cloud generation from High or Ultra quality depth maps for some complex structure and excessive overlap (and hundreds or thousands of images, of course). But for medium-sized projects and adequate image acquisition scenario 16 GB would be likely sufficient, especially, if dense cloud is not required and mesh is the main target product. But 16 GB wont be sufficient for any kind of project and any kind of batch steps. Also OpenCL drivers have some limits for max allocation and Agisoft is currently checking that and they are trying to improve the behavior for GPU devices which uses OpenCL, as CUDA drivers do not have such limitations. So yeah.. I would get it.. Metashape is definitelly worth the price.. and as far as I know all updates until 1.9 are free so you pay once and own it forever. Hope that helps :)

@@GrzegorzBaranArt Grzegorz Baran wow! That's really usefull advice! I think you're right and I will get the free trial just to make sure it all works. The one massive advantage of using Meshroom that I find is that it is so easy to automate and I can just let it run overnight and wake up to the scan being finished with no other input from me other than the settings at the start. Is it possible to do similar things with Metashape or does each step always have to be configured manually? Thanks a lot!

@GrzegorzBaranArt
@GrzegorzBaranArt 4 жыл бұрын
Autodesk Recap is a decent software and does the job but it is a bit like a toy compared to Reality Capture or Metashape . .at least when I compared results while ago. .with all pros and cons of it.. Recap simplified things.. made results nice and smooth but.. not real. Reality Capture and Metashape will show you the truth.. even if it hurts. So if you have speculars, reflections or glares. .you will get noise on the surface.. when model lacks of image cover. .you will get a terrible harsh hole.. Autodesk Recap will probably close this gap and fill with some fake blurred data .. will blur the noise from the surface.. but wil lalso flatten details.. so the model will look nice and clean.. but at cost of losing details.. there is a lot of photogrammetry software on the market... while ago I counted over 130 apps.. and this market is in constant change so do apps. Autodesk Recap was a toy.. maybe today it works better.. I would simply capture something and give it a try.. just process same data with different software and see what works for you.. Metashape also has Trial you can try.. regarding to RC.. I think you can get the PPI version which does things, has no time limit.. and let you pay when you are happy with the result. But as I said.. personally I would pick both.. Metashape and Reality Capture.. depends on what you do.

We used to use Kites for this before Drones arrived. I initially used a full frame Dslr but the weight needed a huge kite especially early in the mornings. I swapped to a Canon G9 when they came out and constructed a 2.4ghz transmitter that I could attach to it. A small screen mounted on my wrist could live view the output, cost around £5 total. I had obviously upgraded my 2GB hard drive. Whilst watching screens you are not watching your Kite or your feet, and things can change rapidly in the air and under foot, so I rapidly gave up on the idea. Standing in one spot was not an option. Add up the cost of the Drone plus licence, Phone and multiple software tools and a capable computer with huge hard drives, and it rapidly becomes an expensive hobby. The big differences since 2007 that jump out are quality and choice of Software and reliability. i sense the number of failed shots is very low, as well as the number of total freezes of the Computer and Softwares. The total time taken must also be better. I can remember renders taking days and the computer was unuseable. A great video to show how its done now and a good example of the quality that can be achieved.
@GrzegorzBaranArt
@GrzegorzBaranArt 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot. Scanning with kite sounds like a painful but interesting process. Wondering how about the wind? Last weekend I almost crashed the drone trying to scan a wall as the wind pushed it to much on a wall and drones sensors locked it in hover mode I didnt control.. while the wind was still pushing the drone towards a wall. I was sure it is over but.. somehow I managed to save it. Drones definitely changed a lot and made life much easier, unfortunately there are areas where where drones are not allowed. Regarding the quality, a DSLR camera still wins in every quality aspect and If I can use a camera I always do. Regarding the photogrammetry reconstruction times.. they are getting better and better with every new software update. PCs needs less resources to what they used to. SImple 16GB of ram seems to be enough for many captures. 32GB for almost anything. Of curse if you aim to get billions of polys you still need more so you can store it and process in memory. Hopefuly reconstruction times from days turned into hours and sometimes minutes. Regading failed shots.. with the current equipment and some practice I dont get any. If everything is well planned, usually 100% of shots are fully useful and are exactly what I need. Also capture times are quite fast.. but.. if you aim for a quality, patience is still a must and sometimes it is worth to spend some additional time isntead of rushing.

@@GrzegorzBaranArt Painfull sometimes. Overstaying in the early morning trying to get that last shot can mean the kite wants to pull your arm off. Hi, Baran I have an important question, Since you are Master at Photogrammetry What is the best photogrammetry software money can buy(Especially for this type of stuff)? Considering I have money to buy any software. Waiting for answer. Thank you

Reality Capture and Agisoft Metashape. They are very close regarding to what they offer and quality they deliver. I think currently Reality Capture is slightly better.. especially for full 3D reconstruction but I know that Metashape is going to catch it very soon. RC handles large amounts of files for reconstruction better but since 1.6.0 it was improved in the Metashape and going to work even better soon. I dont really like Reality Capture subscription model what in consequence makes you dependent on what they do .. they can cut you out from access to their software anytime or just change rules whenever they want to. When you pay for Agisoft Metashape you own it forever with free updates until 1.9. The Standard version isnt expensive and is affordable to anyone. Pro is more expensive. With the new reconstruction mode after 1.6.2 it also handles 3D reconstruction pretty well.. results feels a bit bloby/melted compared to the results from the Reality Capture based reconstruction tho. Each software has its own issues, bugs and problems from version to version. What matters for me is a long term approach to customer.. I have got a feeling that Agisoft isnt as greedy as Reality Capture is as a company... so I would support them .. it means I would pick their software even if currently RC is slightly better.. but this is a race and difference isnt as big.. both are worth to consider. If you work on many heavy 3D props .. today I would get RC.. but I had cases where RC didnt do the job when Metashape did it great.. and vice versa... but if you know the software and understand the settings.. you can do whatever you want to in any of them. Hope that helps :D.. btw.. Baran is my last name, my name is Grzegorz :).. Cheers!

@@GrzegorzBaranArt Thank you Grzegorz, What do you think about Autodesk Recap, Is it better than both? As I told you I have money to buy any software, but I need help to choose from the photogrammetry Master himself !

@@iamdylan850 Its a decent software and does the job but it is a bit a toy compared to Reality Capture or Metashape . .at least when I compared results while ago. .with all pros and cons of it..

Isn't it too many different softwares in the proccess ? Are all of them so special and good at what you use them for so it's impossible to reduce the number ? I'm no expert in this field but somehow it's hard to believe that there is no easier way than 6 softwares to get final result....Or its more cost effective comparing to some proffesional solutions which can do everything under one roof but cost fortune ?

I usually experiment with different workflows and tools to show them in action to those who might not know about them as it gives you the choice of picking the best tool for the job. There is always a choice .. but for photogrammetry you need a photogrammetry reconstruction software .. if you dont care about the texture you can skip color calibration part and shadow removal with the photoediting software. For retopology and uv mapping you can use just ZBrush.. or just Blender.. or just 3DMax.. but none of these does the UV job as good as RizomUV does. You can bake your textures in Toolbag3, or I guess in Blender etc. What I show is just an optional workflow to consider which might be very useful when you deal with more complex task/prop to the one I made for this video. Here you can see something that you might find useful to solve future issues. So to answer your question.. of course you can simplify the process and limit amount of tools but it is going to cost you the quality and would probably need more manual work. Hope that makes sense. Cheers!
