I always felt like it was some kind of heavy pollution fog, and it just fit the game really well, just like in Morrowind where you were on an island with a volcano and hot weather so you could tell yourself it was fog or smoke. GTA IV also had that at a slightly lesser level, but it made it look like real New York city smog and it was great.

You don't need to see the HUD or the character to know where you are. You can just tell. Now though, everything's super bright for no reason, the uniqueness is gone. Just gonna keep playing the originals. If a remaster to bring old games to new consoles means stripping them of everything that made them special, and part of that is the era they were made in, then just stop. Just bring the vanilla game over to new consoles and don't touch a goddamn thing. It's like they want us to pirate their games

That much bigger draw distance only works when the map itself is also huge. The SA map was actually really tiny compared to later GTA games. The fog and decreased draw distance helped hiding that and actually make the map look bigger than it actually was. Also playing with the fog and even the color of the fog can make certain areas look a bit more cramped and gloomy, like the forest.

5:24 Yeah, I'd argue that the second point is actually why they should have kept the fog. Not only does it make the world look tiny, but this also takes away a huge part of the game's atmosphere. The limited draw distance is why Silent Hill for example had such a great mood. They too made the mistake of 'improving' upon that in the Silent Hill 2 'Remaster'.

Seeing the increased draw distance revealing the deceivingly small map size actually hurt me a little. As a kid, I used to think the San Andreas map was fucking HUGE. Traveling from Los Santos to San Fierro used to feel like a real long haul, almost like traveling between two big cities in real life. However you missed a few important things bro: - Cars don't have burning tail lights anymore (during night time) like they had in the original trilogy, only brake lights are present. - Reverse gear light (white light) is also missing. And when using the handbrake, the brake lights go on in the Definitive Edition, which is unrealistic. In the OG GTAs, brake lights didn't go on when using handbrake. So this 'remaster' is missing graphical features that GTA 3 include 20 years ago - Music is also missing in Shops, Strip Clubs, Barber, Tattoo Shop, Restaurants, Bars etc. - In GTA 3 and Vice City the newspapers and leaves on the streets are gone, everything looks clean like Lego City

The reverse gear light wasn't present in the original either iirc. The missing music could be due to the licenses running out, although Rockstar should have renewed them, or at the very least found new songs to replace them (that are appropriate for the timeline obviously). The soundtrack is seriously lacking because of those expired licenses.

What I see in all 3 games - Textures made high def, some changed, same low poly models scaled and smoothing without quality control (serious rigging issues). The trilogy felt like they were just trying to finish the project fast as they can. They didn't take it seriously. They knew if they "remastered" them they will make so much money fast. And what's more interesting and sort of briliant act was they played on the emotions of the players, because they knew they grew up with these games and so playing them again on next-gen consoles would feel like they're playing it for the first time and the players would feel nostalgic. Seems just a static texture placed on the water to simulate a ripple effect, nothing dynamic as water barely moves. Same thing happens when you shoot the water multiple times, only one ripple effect will appear and the old one gets replaced immediately.

I feel like I'm having a stroke when I see mt Chilliad, San Fierro and Las Venturas all from the tallest building in LS. The draw distances and winding roads really made the map feel bigger than it actually was, and this ruins that. When I first got to the part where you loose Sweet, and Tempeny and Pulasky bring you to Mt Chilliad, it really felt like I was far away. Here, it fells like a couple of feet away.

Let's not forget 3 things: that the OG GTA came out in 2004, 2 console generations ago and it still manages to do some pretty impressive feats like loadless (disruptive) roaming of the map that most of the new "improved" visuals probably came as default with the new engine, and were probably lazily slapped on top that the gamecode it's the same, and still they managed to mess up things like swimming

The "loadless" feature is pretty awesome and it was made a part of Midnight Club, where open city racing is a major feature. Actually, Midnight Club 3 is one of those games you can play off of a USB drive on the PS2 (very slow 1.1 speeds!!!) without major issues thanks to this feature.

When I first played this game, I thought the map was HUGE. The villages in the countryside felt really disconnected from the cities. Only later I found out the map was not much greater than a square metre. The close fog really did its job well. Although the limitless draw distance feels cool from the streets, it absolutely destroys the game's atmosphere. It's an embarrassment.

San Andreas actually isn't tiny, it's 12.7 square miles, twice the size of Morrowind's game world of 6 square miles. It's also not that far from Skyrim's 14 square miles and Oblivion's 16 square miles

Yes and what's even worse is that this port will probably be the base for future re-releases, because nobody wants to decifer old PS2 code to actually make a proper port of the old game and update it to support a new graphics index with UE4.... AND THEN look at it thoroughly to make sense of the art direction and after that painstakingly make reinterpretations that's both respectful to the original vision but adds a new fresh code of paint that is actually more detailed and deep than what the original art director at the time even could dream of. On top of this also make a robust control system that has options on how you want to play and control the game.

It's still a gorgeous game but has too many bugs and missing features. Meanwhile definitive edition is a lazy cashgrab and they didn't put in any real effort into anything. Despite the ridiculous amount of glitches in the definitive edition, I still love it. Put maybe 50 hours into San Andreas on the Switch and I've seen so many glitches. Still worth playing for old fans and new alike.. Wish it was better upon release..
