Saw RHCP with Dave back in 95. Daves guitar playing on One Hot Minute was sensational. The RHCP have never been anywhere near as good since then. Dave's solo album Trust No One is awesome too. Such a unique and brilliant album.

Navarro...Jake E. Lee...Billy Duffy and Hendrix are hands down my biggest influences as a player. Dave doesn't get near enough credit as a guitarist. Great tone...always a ton of fire in his solos and great thematic interesting rhythm parts especially on songs like "Then she Did" and the entrie Deconstruction album.

Remember seeing Janes 89-91 then Lollapalooza; they were my favorite teenage live band… unstoppable back then especially with me and my crew on our weekly acid trips…. Always mind blown with Dave’s guitar playing. My favorite show was on North Carolina campus super small auditorium show; stage diving in front of Perry as he’s belting out “whores”. Love always!!! Never stop boys!!!

Dave did a Fantastic job adjusting to the Chili Peppers sound! Love OHM Pepper album!
@warborn_inc.
@warborn_inc. 2 жыл бұрын
I know its not popular opinion but OHM is my favorite RHCP album right along with BSSM. Its absurd that OHM gets so much shade thrown at it. Navarro played amazing parts on that album and to be honest its the last time the Chilli Peppers were actually "Red Hot " they are basically "Mild Green Chili Peppers" since 99
@nedim_guitar
@nedim_guitar 2 жыл бұрын
@@warborn_inc. OHM is my favorite album of theirs, by far! The difference between RHCP with Dave Navarro and John Frusciante is that the band with DN sounds HUGE! I've seen the RHCP live (although with Josh on guitar instead of John) and they sounded very underwhelming. Dave brings that heavyer rock style, with more effects to, so obviously the band sounded huge. There's a reason there's no power trio that sound like the RHCP. There's not much power there. I'm not shitting on the RHCP, I like them, but their game isn't the heavier music, like on OHM.
@jupitermoongauge4055
@jupitermoongauge4055 2 жыл бұрын
Dave, in my opinion is a far more accomplished and interesting guitar player than John Frusciante. Blood Sugar is still my favourite RHCP album but One Hot Minute is a very close second. The great thing about Frusciante on BSSM is that he plays a supporting role to Chad and Flea , and still to this day the less Frusciante plays the better because he has nowhere near the chops and imagination that Dave posseses.
@warborn_inc.
@warborn_inc. 2 жыл бұрын
@@nedim_guitar I've seen RHCP on every tour since 1987 so I've seen them with Every guitarist they had except Jack Sherman and Blackbyd McKnight and the OHM tour was hands down the most powerful tour I have ever seen them on. The Mothers Milk tour was great (but very different)...early BSSM dates before John totally checked out were really strong shows and even 93 Lollapalooza with Arik Marshall was a very good show....but I saw 3 dates on the OHM tour and they were brilliant. Ultimately I prefer Dave in Jane's Addiction (who I think are a far better band than the Chilis) and John makes more sense in the Chili's. ...but the people who dismiss OHM have no clue what they are talking about. Im a professional guitarist myself and from a technical standpoint Navarro is easily as good or better thsn anything John has done (especially since returning in 99) Johns work on BSSM is brilliant but after his drug issues his ability was greatly diminished...his playing became much sloppiler and his overall tone is weak. I know ranking players is totally subjective and it's a matter of opinion...but its far easier to play John's material than it is to play Navarros material. Im fine with people loving John...I like him a lot too but the fans who talk shit about OHM are either deaf or they just hate anything that isn't John. I think Josh did some really interesting stuff with them as well and he wss great Live....but again he gets treated like a step child by the over zealous Frusciante fans. Anyway. Cheers man.

This was a fantastic interview btw. One thing I wanted to bring up was the demise of hair metal/rock. I know “grunge” has been often credited for dismissing that era of music but IMO, I think Jane’s Addiction actually had a hand in that in the late 80’s. The NS album was a bit of a watershed moment in heavy music although JA was mostly tossed into the Alternative bucket, they were a guitar heavy band. It was the juxtaposition of Perry’s avant-garde eccentricities, with the metal/heavy rock tinged guitar of Navarro that made JA so interesting. Put the most underrated rhythm section of that time of Avery and Perkins into that mix and you have fucking magic. To this day I’m still blown away by those first 3 records. They were way ahead of their time. Apologies for the length of my comment here.

I've been to hundreds of rock concerts, many I don't even remember being at until I see an old ticket stub or something. But seeing JA at the JAR arena in Akron on the Ritual tour is one of the most memorable shows of my life. Those guys were so sonically explosive, never saw anything like it before or since. What an incredibly unique band! This was a great tone talk, thanks so much for doing this. Then She Did and Three Days! Of course, is there any other answer?

I really like the One Hot Minute album he plays on. Walk about is way cool and so is Music is My Aeroplane . It’s one my favorite solos to play. My wife surprised me with tickets in 2005 / 06 to a band he was in for a bit . The show was at Warehouse Live in Houston TX. Front row! Dave has a Hendrix vibe. Great episode! It seemed like the time flew by, though! Been a Jane's fan for a really long time, and it was great to hear Dave's stories. I wish he was more of a gear head, though! He didn't talk much about his Ibanez days, or what pickups he was using, or used on his PRS. I am guessing the stock Ibanez Dimarzios on his RG's, and the HFS/Bass on his PRS's? Anyway, thank you, Tone Talk! This was kick ass! When Tool is done touring, you should try to get Adam on! Billy Howerdel, or James Iha would be cool, too!

Awesome!! Remember seeing Jane's at the Palladium in LA in 90?, could be 91. Holy @#$%, what a show, vicious, even freaky/scary with Perry :-). I remember when I heard the first couple Jane's Addiction records and how I just felt the guitars just didn't sound like anything - it wasn't obvious what the hell he was playing. Very unique.
@Josephine_Mass
@Josephine_Mass 9 ай бұрын
Well said, yeah it takes me back to the first time I heard Barrett play on Piper. It was like what the hell is going on here? There are moments where you're like, am I really hearing this? It's almost as if you have to look to your friends about it to make sure it wasn't just you lol Sometimes I felt more like I'd been put into a machine with secrets than a room with a stereo. Then, you get launched back into reality all nonchalant via some impossible segway, as if you'd just had a quick stroke or something and nothing ever wasn't normal, because the guitarist and band were playing more typically like humans again. That's a stylistic attribute that Navarro and Barrett possessed which distinguished them from Gilmour and even Page to an extent. You're left there thinking "did he really just pull that off?" and now you're listening to a human song on earth again, like a trick had been played on you. Syd even did that lyrically, which Perry has yet to exhibit (Chip Away aside), although vocally it's the other way around between the two in that regard. Perry had moments where he used the band in managing to do things with his voice that took you somewhere only Floyd as a band altogether had done to take you there, very naturally in both cases though, which is part of why it has you confirming it with your friends, because they were right there with you; they must have heard it? Sure enough, they did, then you talk and try to identify what had happened, how it was done, and are left with returning to your life as a listener or following the call to you that a band of your own needs forming, because going to work everyday wasn't what you're here for. You had just heard something that you at least know was much more like what you are actually here for, and it just spit you back out, in front of witnesses who feel the same important way about it. Unfortunately, a big ton of them are probably ruthless backstabbers (as is the case inside the industry), drugs are formidable to say the least (and definitely would be for them, if not for you as well), very few people end up creating these moments, let alone capturing and getting them widely distributed, and you'd be put in the position of knowing much of all that stuff if you were savvy enough at the early age the idea [existential revelation] had occurred to you. The key is, to not be aware of much of that, keep thinking your friends love you, then invest a substancial amount of your time, effort/energy, thinking, feelings, innate ability, and even the most reasonable of expectations into moving along the process of making it happen, until it falls apart in your face due to most of those hidden obstacles (hidden, in the sense that you couldn't have known the extent they'd fuck the situation up) or due to even a single one of them undermining it all, and just go ahead with it. Get fucked. Return to the previous form of slavery that you had been designated for, unhappily now having witnessed what your essence is designed to do but is being prevented from, or try again smarter this time, which maybe necessitates enough attempts (due to being deliberately sidelined by narcissistic romantic partners) that you're too old, disillusioned, paranoid, or traumatized to get any where with it. Then you can reminisce back (desperately, fondly, or both) on it all and remember the rare times when drugs had proved to you that reality itself is artificial, existence seemingly very fundamentally relates and operates in relation to you specifically, and consider actually continuing on attempting the dream as many times as necessary without neglecting or placing your loved ones at risk, until you're either seen as a late blooming savant, or outside a casino after being ejected from a Boz Scaggs performance for being too inebriated and showing your junk to onlookers at the fist fight you found yourself in, which turned out to have been instigated by a sucker-punch in your blindspot from some turd who wanted to borrow the last of your table's ketchup 45 minutes ago. There are different laws on the reservation but the song remains the same. You ditch the scene before tribal police show. Your attacker looks more native than you and you know the only things that would swing a court decision in your favor are a relatively clean track-record and any sympathy you might elicit from a judge for your increasingly stress-induced IBS.

Yeah one hot minute was a great album, my friends is a great song, John frusciante has to improve his perceptual skills to listen to the music open minded, it's a sad loss not to hear those songs live - I fear Josh's songs have the same fate, hearing John's interpretation of others guitar parts would be beneficial to everyone

Agreed. I like John a lot and I think at the end of the day he is really the guy for the RHCPs...BUT...OHM is a massive album and its frankly stupid that they refuse to touch those songs. (I know they broke out a few of them when Josh was in the band) and I think you're right...I bet all of Joshs material sadly will be left to die the same fate as OHM. I will be very surprised if they ever touch those songs again.

@WARBORN yes, John is very childish in this respect, I would play the songs just to give the rest of the guys some variation as it can't be that fun to tour playing the same hits, I would add new songs while touring on top of album as you have nothing else to do while waiting for gigs to start, seems even creativity has a box
@limoncr5205
@limoncr5205 2 жыл бұрын
Well when you are in a band with such emotional, human involvement, it's his only real band since 18, you have created with them such special and intense moments and albums, I understand that if you're asked to play songs you had nothing to do with it or you don't even like that much, just to please crowds, it might work for passing by sessions musicians. Not for someone like John. As a listener I enjoy Warped. As a member of the band, in his context, as a creative entity, I understand he doesn't feel connected to that piece of creation. What came before, Hillel phase, also made John in a way so he had to play it, it's the core sound of band, at its origin and he was a fan. I don't think John has to improve his perception skills... that being said, Navarro did a great job in that phase of rhcp.

@@limoncr5205 Josh played Johns songs, i respect humble men who dont hold themselves too precious - plus the other members wrote those songs John needs to man up and drop the ego - they all talk about love and brotherhood blah blah i dont buy that bs they are millionaires with millions of dipshit fans mindlessly masterbating over their magic image - the guy plays guitar hes good he talented hes not humbled - his history should teach him respect for Dave Josh and the band - drummers just play hey aint no fruity fancy dress wear hippy humping cucks

Way too many RHCP questions and I wish Friedman had been interviewed a bit.
