On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by Australian barrister Neville Rochow as we explore a new anti discrimination bill in Queensland Australia that the LDS church believes could negatively impact their ability to control who can and can’t enter the Brisbane LDS temple.
But is this really the case? The LDS church is rallying members to send emails and reach out to elected officials expressing concern. The bill could also impact the LDS church’s power to insist that church employees have temple recommends.
Neville helps us cut through the misinformation surrounding the proposed bill as we discuss the possible ramifications and realities.

I wonder how much of this is also mixed up in the recent trouble the church has had with the Australian government over some creative accounting they got caught doing in an effort to continue hoarding money while complying with much more stringent fiscal transparency laws for religious organizations in Australia vs the USA. I wonder if they had perhaps entertained giving up non profit status and functioning as a for profit enterprise in Australia to try to avoid trouble over their profits figuring the taxes would be less than the potential loss of profits? If that had been something they had contemplated then they would have a harder time arguing that they are exempt from anti discrimination rules.

A very informative discussion. Religious organisations talk about community. However, their actions do not live up to this. How can we build communities if we do not work with each other?

Claims of constant persecution are often used to strengthen an organization or belief system. Rally the troops put adherents on the defensive. Us against the whole world. Many times such a group is actually being given more rights and consideration than everyone else.

I’m thinking that members wouldn’t be prohibited to go to the temple even if not paying tithing. No discrimination.

Temple recommends are issued based on worthiness. If the Church can't keep the unworthy out of the Temple, then they should close it down.

With the bill just being that: a bill still, then it's not yet GOING to replace that act. So that's inaccurate wording.

"Two thousand and sixteen..." (re: the year and those like it). There's an easier way to say years from this century: Just like in previous centuries: 1776 = "SEVENTEEN-seventy-six," 1830 = "EIGHTEEN-thirty," etc. Try it today!
