I'm almost 70 years old and I've been on a low-carb diet for some years now. Last year my blood test came back excellent in all areas except for a higher than normal LDL score. The doc wanted to put me on statins right away and I politely refused. He said that I run the risk of having a stroke. I said thanks but no, I will take my chances. To put it bluntly, I do not trust the medical establishment who, at every opportunity try to get us on long-term medication.

I’m 69 with slightly raised cholesterol. It’s always been a little high. A young doctor became visibly annoyed with me when I refused statins. I politely refused and told her that I would take my chances without statins. She became so upset that she increased my consultation fee substantially. I refused to pay the higher fee and explained the situation to the practice manager. She was quite understanding when I explained that I would not be bullied into taking a particular or any medication. But it just goes to show the level of brainwashing amongst the medical fraternity.

They pulled this on the covid vax. I went to the er and instead of going for my dizzy can't breathe or stand situation they kept asking if I had my vax and insisted I get it and why not. I refused, came around, they found nothing and I went home. I've been on simvastatiin some 10 years. New dr put me on atorvastatin. It dried me out bad so he put me back in 10mg simvastatin. Then he tried rovustatin. Not as bad as ator but I wanted back. He did, to 20mg simvastatin. Reading all this and other sites, I want off.

I am a hospice nurse. I have a great deal of autonomy in my care of patients. I always recommend that that they stop their statins. Ive been blessed to see many patients have fewer symptoms, improved well-being and some have done so well they were dischsrged from hospice. One had very disruptive chest pain that was completely resolved shortly after statin eliminated. No proof that all is related to stopping the statins but I dont think it was a coincidence. There were no other changes, other than having a nurse who deeply loves her fellow man

Saw my cardiologist today. Since last time (4 months ago) I be dropped 22 lbs and my bloodwork has lowered in every significant number. He was ecstatic with the results. He asked what I was doing (clearly I am recovering from a broken leg). I told him I’m doing the carnivore diet. He freaked out! He then admonished me that the plaque in my arteries would cause a HA (right after telling me my arteries looked great from the stress test). My cholesterol went down from 300 to 260. He was insisting I take a statin. Just like last appointment, I told him I flat out refuse. He was okay with everything I did, until he found out how I did it. He’s a brainwashed cardiologist!

She knew that I was very fit and slim but insisted that I get a cardiac CAT scan to see if I had some clog in my heart arteries. I had the test and had zero clogs and a heart age of 39. I am in my early 70’s. I no longer have my cholesterol .checked in my yearly blood work. Case closed.

Whatever’s gospel will change in a decade or two. Often doctors are the last to know. Ex.; womens Health Initiative stoped post menopausal women from helpful HRT. Now they say it’s preventative for Breast ca. heart disease osteoporosis etc.

You are such a voice of reason. At age 72 I've been low carb for 6 years've had all kinds of blood work done and things look pretty good...CAC score of 6, HDL/TGL ration of less than 1, fasting insulin consistently under 2.2, and even had an LDL-particle size test done...insulin sensitive...HOMA-IR is 0.5, weight 164, height 5'10", and here's the kicker...my physician wants to put me on a statin; no way in hell. I think that so many of these docs work for the drug companies (whether they realize it or not), because they certainly do not know how to assess risk.

Since then I have been seeing Dr. Cywes who continues to guide and direct our low-carbohydrate way of eating which has: 1) lowered my A1C; 2) lowered my blood pressure; 3) lowered bodily inflammation (if not totally eliminated); etc. Our health continues to benefit from his great work! Doc, I love this. Specifically from a male perspective. Put a pre diabetic male on a statin and their testosterone will drop, their A1C will spike, their liver will be damaged (which will contribute to poor T conversion), and then the solution to fix everything is another medication to control their blood sugar. Its insane.

I had an appointment to set up a new primary doctor. We just talked about my information and medical history, which has been relatively uneventful. No labs have been done yet, but the moment that I said that some people in my family history died from heart attacks (in their 70s), and that 1 older sibling had a stroke (50s), she immediately stated my "need" for statins. I asked about side effects, and she said "muscle cramps". She invited me to "look it up", but not to worry about side effects. All I've been seeing are horror stories of a LOT of pain, liver and kidney failure, becoming diabetic, etc. Many years ago, I found Drs online talking about cholesterol, saying high "bad" cholesterol" was a myth. And now, there's doctors on YT saying the same thing. KEEP POSTING. This information needs to reach more people. Clearly, doctors automatically go straight to "take statins" if you even say the word "heart". I decided to dive in to "looking it up" because I do NOT trust Big Pharma, especially because of how they pushed the clot shot during Covid. Bribing people to take a shot? It could not have been any clearer that they care only about profits. I started my low carb eating yesterday.

Glad to see this series! Statins are overprescribed, oversold, and for many people are extremely dangerous. It took me years to realize that statins were the cause of a bunch of mystery conditions and symptoms I was having. The five worst ideas: Making them OTC; giving them to children; giving them to everyone over 50; giving them out as condiments at fast food restaurants; putting them in the water supply. Some of these ideas are making headway, fortunately, some of the others aren't. This is the first time I've heard "everyone over 18." Yikes! When I was on Statins, my Trigs/HDL ratio was 7.45. After I got off them and changed my diet, I got it down to 1.47.

I had a stroke following the dissection of the carotid artery inner wall after a chiropractic adjustment on my neck. When released from the hospital on Coumadin I was also given Lipitor even though I didn’t have high cholesterol, because it was “normal protocol” after having a stroke. This caused horrible pain in my hips and then rib cage. The doctor reduced the dosage which didn’t help, so I took myself off Lipitor following this conversation with my boss at the time. My boss told me, “a doctor is a paid consultant who gives us information and recommendations based on his/her knowledge, and then we decide what to do”. Even if I had high cholesterol I still wouldn’t take that medicine.

At my last annual check-up with my primary, a nurse practitioner in training agreed with me that statins are not the answer and are, in fact, harmful particularly regarding cognitive impairment. After speaking with her, my doc entered the exam room and told me he was renewing my script for simvastatin. I said OK, but never filled the prescription. Voila! No more aches and pains. I guess the NP is more up to date on the data.

Helpful video, and timely for me. Just had appt with internist - reviewing blood work. 290 total chol, but HDL=90 and TG = 85. Good fasting insulin #. He freaked and insisted that I had to take statins. I declined and he asked me, seriously, if I thought that I know more than the Cardiologist org of Europe (I am in EU). I sent him a few JAMA papers on studies re: Chol : CVD, Statin Use vs CVD.. Guess he knows more than the studies in the USA medical journals.

My internist told me she doesn't read papers. She is a pro and knows it all. Recommended a statin and covid vaccine. The health authority she works for is the sickest population segment of the province. 800-900 staff on sick call per day. Appointments up to 3 months late even with radically lowered service standards.

Excellent video! I've forwarded it to my brother who has a CAC level of 1150. His doctor put him on a statin immediately and yelled at him that he is going to die. Talk about stressing my brother out. He called him an idiot for refusing to take a stress test. The doctor never gave him a diet or any advice on weight reduction. Further more he has insisted he will need stints/stents to improve his chest pain. I strongly urged him to not take a Statin drug. I've also advised my brother to contact you ASAP. Thank you for confirming my fears concerning statin drugs.

I'm on a mostly carnivore diet. My cholesterol is slightly high. Right away, my doctor wanted to put me on a statin. I said no, they can cause diabetes! She didn't even know that! She checked her computer and found it can, and said...its only a 6% chance. So she wants me to take a drug that may help prevent heart trouble by 1.1%, but give me a 6% chance of diabetes? I said no way! She's crazy!🤪

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I had a primary care physician I loved my cholesterol was high. But my doctor told me that the protective cholesterol was high and my overall scores were good. Fast forward two years I go in for a new physical. My doctor has retired. The new doctor looks at the same scores and has a fit and tells me I probably should be on statins, but he’ll allow me another test if I insist. Test comes out the same. He insists I go on statins. I ignore the advice, confused. Very grateful for your videos, and I’ve heard similar things through Atkins program many years ago with which I’ve had the best luck keeping weight off. I am simply relieved, very relieved to hear your take. it gives me the confidence to do more research and listen to the rest of your info. PS the new doctor didn’t last a year and is now gone and I’m searching in Rochester New York if you have a good referral . But I’m healthy without heart disease 60 years old.

Still the docs get concerned with our high LDL :D . Very happy my father declined doctor's offer of statins.

Had a non-Stemi, MI Feb 17. Angioplasty went wrong February 21. Three stents. On third stent, cardiac artery perforated. An hour after returning to CCU had a tamponade. chest tube and intubation and ventilator 24 hours. Recovering well however, I wasn’t feeling great last week, went to emergency where I work actually lol. Was told my liver enzymes were elevated. And the emerge doc told me he suspected it was the statin. I have not believed in statins for a long time having followed your channel as well as Dr. Barry. And Dr. Fung. But I took them because I was afraid not to take them at first. I will not be taking them again. I also had an argument with a cardiologist, who thankfully is no longer my cardiologist. He was insisting that I go on Metformin even though I control my diabetes with diet. As long as I stay low carb my blood sugars stay in the normal range. But I obviously still have some insulin resistance that I am trying to deal with through alternate day fasting. It is difficult to navigate the healthcare system, I am in Canada, when you don’t believe the nutritional advice. My first days in hospital they kept sending me up what I considered high carb meals that were marked as diabetic. One breakfast what is 90 g of carbohydrate! Thank you for what you do Dr Cywes!

Diane Lynn, It's very sad to hear your story! I'm also from Canada and have my own story. I was almost crippled by taking Lipitor 10 mg for many years. I couldn't walk without having excruciating pain going down from my left hip to my ankle, and neither could I raise my arms to take a shower or wash my hair. My family doctor told me that it was arthritis combined with old age (50 years old) so that was expected. I told him I thought it was the Lipitor that was causing my pain but he insisted it wasn't, and told me to continue taking it. I was very disappointed and on returning home, threw out the Lipitor. ONLY 6 days after NOT taking the Lipitor, my pains were almost gone! I went back to my doc and said doc, instead of getting older, I'm getting younger! I then raised both my arms above my head and behind my back to show him that I had no pain. I said I also walked in here without even limping because my leg pain has almost gone. He said what did you do, and I told him; he was very surprised but only smiled; he couldn't say a word! I'm now 68 years old with NO pain whatsoever; NOT even arthritis!

I'm fortunate to live in a village with a smart GP. When I first signed up to see her, my LDL cholesterol was a tad high but she wasn't worried (TG and HDL fine) - I was perhaps more so because of the notes / comments from the lab (which must be the 'pat' information given if anything is outside the reference) so decided to investigate. Had a CAC scored 0. Connected with family to see if FH is present - it is in an Aunt, who's evidentally been on statins for over 20 years! I made some tweaks to my already healthy/whole food diet and introduced time restricted eating and upped my water intake. 6 months later, everything is within range, Dr. still chilled. I was ready to have the 'oh hell no' conversation re statins but didn't need to go there ... which is nice.

Commenting from Australia, about three years ago i was diagnosed with AF but i think i had been suffering for a long time as i had been struggling with energy levels at work for a while already. I started struggling for breath every morning after waking up a sitting down having a coffee and getting ready for work, this went on for a week and on the weekend i had to sit and rest every five minutes as i just had no energy and pressure in my chest. We made an appointment to see my doctor, told him my story and he checked my pulse which was 100 then an ECG showed the irregular heart beat. He sent me to a Cardiologist who, on further investigation, found out i had a Bicuspid valve and an Anurism in my Aorta. Apparently i was born with the Bicuspid valve and the Anurism is a commen problem in wieght lifters which i did in my younger days. Also she said i had i little bit of calcification in my arteries, not much but ultimatly i was put on blood thinners a betta blocker and Crestor for Cholesterol which i think was six at the time. They fixed the the irregular heart beat at the local hospital by stopping it and restarting it and i felt great. But gradually i developed a feeling in my chest like congestion but everything was fine at my GP and he didnt know what it was and wasnt concerned, i put it down to pain from worn vertibrae in the middle of my back . The next visit to the Cardiologit found nothing had changed with my heart but my Cholesterol had come down to 3.9 and i said thats good but she said it was still to high for what I've got so she increased my statin. My energy levels seem to o get a bit worse and i could get going till after lunch and still had a lump in my chest,, i tried not taking one tablet for a few days and then another and nothing changed untill a stopped taking theCrestor, within a day or two i was back working in the garden new energy levels and then, after listenig to a utube video, i was inspired to go low carb and gave up sugar, bread, flour, rice, biscuit, cracker and cakes to help with feeling bloated and it worked a charm. Then i woke up one morning and decided not to eat breakfast and had a go at Intermittant fasting, i had gained a lot of weight and was about 112 kg, now three months later im down to 92kg and dont have any cravings just eat meat and a few veges like cauliflower broccoli zucchini and a few others bat not potato. I still dont take the statin my Cholesterol is up at seven but i feel the best ive felt for years. I can walk briskly up hills without stopping for breath the lump in my chest is gone and my GP doesnt seem too worried about the Cholesterol he said we can check it in six months. I woulld not have done all this if i hadnt have stopped taking the Crestor, now i am worried what the Cardiologist is going to say and hope i did the right thing but i feel that good that i dont think so.

@@mickthefisherman1562 good luck to you. Its crazy that as a layman I seem to have worked out more than my quack. You seem to have stumbled on the keto diet and intermittent fasting. The carnivore is simply the ultimate low carb diet, and works fabulously. Ive kicked all my heart meds including beta blockers. When exercising my heart rate is low, and my bp is lower without meds than when I was on meds. The other part of the puzzle is that by stopping statins and increasing cholesterol, you have avoided/diminished the threat of alzheimers and parkinsons.

My takeaway: graciously but clearly ASK: can you point me to the studies on this? Can you walk me through the evidence based risks and benefits? I've not been to a doctor for 25 years other than a couple of gyno check ups. I'm relatively fit and healthy, but at age 54, I'm now looking deeper into personal responsibility (cutting out sugar and processed foods, increasing exercise), prevention, and navigating the medical care system as I am aging. This was timely. And I praise God for his incredible design and the mechanisms He put in place for self healing. We are wonderfully and fearfully made. ❤

Really appreciate this balanced explanation of how the research bias comes about. So hard to understand otherwise. As far as the reversing of ‘emotional’ eating and addiction, food for me and especially carbs, was my drug of choice and I now see my addiction no different to other more unacceptable drugs. Treatment for me was about the root cause of the need to stuff down pain and trauma, both the obvious kind and the insidious subtle variety that damages self worth. Body, emotions, beliefs are all connected in physical outcomes, including the role epigenetics has played in understanding why a particular gene is activated in one person but not another. I feel so blessed to have been able to finally see the connection to my emotions and my desire to ‘punish’ and soothe myself with food. The keto/ketovore journey is new but feels right for me. Thank you for all this compassionate teaching Dr Cywes 🙏

Several years ago my Kaiser doc wanted me on statins. Why I asked? "You are over 65, your cholesterol numbers are good, but we can improve them." I talked to a dr. friend and he said the current practice is to recommend statins for men over 65. He was but I doesn't take them. I went back to my Kaiser doc and told him that I love looking at the research of best therapy models in psychotherapy ( my field until I retired). I asked him to show me the best research that is the basis for Kaiser's best practice that recommends I take statins. He sent me the study. Oh how easy it was to show how the study was flawed and the findings were unsupported by the evidence. The fact that the study was done with people who already had heart attacks was only the tip of the iceberg We met, and I showed him step by step why that study was flawed , how the claim that statins reduced the chance of a heart attack was unproven, and why the findings even if they did show they made a difference for people who already had a heart attack wouldn't apply to me. (He didn't even know the difference between absolute and relative risk so I explained that to him.)He was clearly unsettled. He said, "What am I to do? I have to follow Kaiser's best practices guidelines?" I said that he had an ethical problem but I would make my own decision. I am now 82. Still going strong.

Thank you for sharing this vital information and for encouraging us to ask questions and understand our health. Within a week of getting covid 2022, I was dx with Psoriatic Arthritis out of the blue. Turns out I may have had it for years without symptoms except stiffness that I thought was just weak joints, not even psoriasis. I had pitted nails, gastritis and Rosacea but again thought these were isolated. Rx is careful diet, exercise, methotrexate, prednisone and a daily anti inflammatory but very little info on options, side effects and long term prognosis. I'm still learning from YT and Google what questions to ask and alertnatives to consider. A rare Gastritis flare up landed me in hospital - Drs wanted to take out my gallbladder just in case 🤔 but I insisted on a G scope first - results? Gastritis 😅 Glad I held onto my little GB😊 even my rheumatologist agreed with me. The question of statins crops up for slightly elevated ldl but I decline. We eat carnivore, meat fat and salt. I LOVE it, feel great and have reduced my meds somewhat. My vit D and iron were low - since supplementing and addind Zinc, turmeric and vit B co I'm feeling great! I've started using a rebounder and lifting small weights🏋‍♂️😊 I'm so grateful for my health, my mobility and for Drs who care to share vital information that empowers us to ask questions and make informed choices about our health and our bodies🙏

The latest comment from my doctor in relation to my lipid studies was, quote “deranged” 🤦‍♀️…..needless to say, I have made an appointment to talk to a member of your team, as none of the doctors that I’ve seen here seem to understand , or have any information to help people on a low carbohydrate diet. 🤷‍♀️ Thank you again for all your information. You are helping so many people 🤗

Had a call from the doctor two months ago about going on statins and I said no. Have lost 11kgs so far from 97kg and making my way to late 70’s, with good diet, sugar addiction switched off, alcohol down to two drinks per week at poker and exercise. Energy went up. Diet is way more interesting.

I recently found you here and I have learned so much from watching your video's...I am 63 and recently had a minor stroke and 2 years ago I was in with Pneumonia and Congested Heart Failure...So, or the last 2 years I quit smoking. But before, that I was or I thought was eating proper...I lost some weight, but, not since the Keto or now Carnivore Lifestyle I have simply dodged the bullet with the help of the Lord...In the last 2 - 3 months I have lost 30 pounds and I ride my eBike with petal assist. I have more energy, I feel good...I can say the Carnivore Diet and all the years since I quit soda pop...I nag everybody when I see people go for a sugar drink...LOL...

You are a very wise man. My father, a doctor, told me the same thing, about the body's ability to heal itself. He was a very smart man, like you, Sir. You are so right about the carbs. Comfort Food. For Severe Anxiety. And Depression.

So true on the push for the drugs. The key is the life style change. I had the same issue after my heart failure last year. There were signs of an infection but my cholesterol numbers were good. I didn't have a heart attack but had edema. I'm 6 ft 6 in. and went from 220 lbs to 190 lbs in 6 days with lasic. Of course they talked me into 3 stents that if I had a few days to think about, I wouldn't have gotten those. I walk a mile everyday and don't get winded. I still have some stress to deal with and I never felt the stress but would get wound up with work and progress on projects. I'm surprised you didn't mention K2 as help with plaque in arteries. I would like to know your opinion. Liked and shared.

I have refused to get cholesterol measured at the doctor any longer. They are absolutely out of control. My doctor bases her entire recommendation for me around it. Other doctors do as well. If I want it tested I get it tested on my own at a lab that is not my doctor. I get my CAC score every 5 years.

I have come to the conclusion that my primary care physician is nothing more than my drug dealer, completely dismissed 40lbs lost, 100pt drop in trig and still insists on statins. I no longer hear anything he says. I simply go for the 10% discount on my annual health insurance premiums for getting annual physical
