Back in the 70s I worked for a friend of mines parents who owned one of the largest marinas on the gulf side of the Keys and they hated most sailboaters mostly because they didn’t come in and pay for docking but they would dinghy in and bring their trash and fill their water jugs and walk their dogs and buy nothing in my mind was the only way to live but I didn’t have to pay to taxes, the mortgage, the garbage fees, and the water bills or the yard guy to keep the grounds up so now I can see their side of the problem. With that said there was good free anchorage just a mile away with dinghy dockage and with a little effort access to water, fuel, and groceries for any who came there. That was then now the city controls the anchorage with paid mornings but you get a secure dinghy dock, access to a work area for minor off boat repair a lounge and free library or book exchange and a lot of good information a taxi service, a water taxi service and delivery to your boat service they even bring out the newspaper or groceries for a fee so nothings free who would have thought that people would pay for a bottle of water but they do to the tune of billions of dollars a year. They already have oxygen bars so get ready the government will be taxing breathing next OH WAIT THEY ALREADY DO if you’re breathing they are making you pay 😂. Good rant and thank goodness you got your dingy back in one piece. You’re friend in SC paying for the privilege to watch you on utube.

You are 100% correct. The west coast of Florida is the best coast. But even the west has begun to shut down freedoms. I looked for land to live off grid and finally gave up as it was impossible. I ended up in Texas . 🤗💖⛵🐬

the reason florida has evolved to the state that is it. over the years many low income individuals migrated to FL waters in what amounts to floating derelicts. they do not have the income to properly maintain, clean, insure, repair, etc., what amounts to a floating van parked in an empty lot on the street. as is common with such people they accumulate all kinds of junk and, due to a lack of maintenance, become an eyesore and a sanitary concern. people wind up bathing on deck, sewage discharges, laundry hanging on the rails and masts, etc. and the lifestyle often attracts the same sort of folks who might tend to live in a van under the overpass with all the assorted mental health/substance abuse problems that comes with them. beacause the weather in FL is generally good, they can do this year round. very often these vessels become actual derelicts and are abandoned and/or sink in the waterways making it someone elses problem. needless to say, people who pay from 1 million to 50 million dollars for a water front home are not keen on having such a vessel anchored semi-permanently just 50 yards off shore. these are the same reasons many marinas in south FL do not permit live aboards. if people would have been more responsible over the years things probably would not be as bad as they are now. BTW - this is the same reason you see so many sunken derelicts along the intracoastal. pure lack of maintenance, abandonment, and the lack of resources to move the vessel elsewhere during significant storms. these vessels are unsightly, not good for the environment, and are hazards to navigation.

I agree with almost everything you say here, I would add though, there needs to be a way to differentiate between said people, and those trying to live a simple lifestyle

The reality is far to many people do not take the time to pickup up there dogs poop, and homeless people squatting on boats they do not own are looking for a free place to stay. I've seen people bring their dog into the pool area, the dog takes a dump, and just walk away like nothing happened.

Not sure the attitude you are observing is limited to certain kinds of boaters … try renting a car in Florida … it always feels like they would rather not rent one to you

I guess it was a good you were technically docked and not moored. with the law and stupid ordinances its always about the definition of words, the legal definition. but that is why avoid places like florida, its not free. far from it.
