I was born in the wrong side of the world. Although I love western classical music I find our temperament ´machine like´sounding when compared to this flexible and organic understanding of scales and natural relation between notes
@tfae3 жыл бұрын
Don't paint all of the Western tradition under the same brush! The music of Harry Partch and Ben Johnston approaches intonation in a similar way.

From what I learned, it's basically laziness lol We didn't want to have to remember which keys have the best sounding intervals.... Kinda funny though. Because if we used Just intonation.... music would have such a unique sound in the western world ESPECIALLY for metal lol
@chairuwu490310 ай бұрын
not really, it's more about making transposed chords have the same sound quality as their untransposed counterparts and making key changes more fluent
@marcossidoruk80336 ай бұрын
@@ericchin739 Not at all lol. In just intonation notes that are very far from the fundamental sound awful and it makes modulation and complex tonal polyphony essentially impossible wich is pretty much what makes Western classical music unique and beautiful. Indian classical music is cool, but leave Western classical as it is, this is not a competition of traditions.

This is fascinating. I come from Scotland where pentatonics are prominent in our folk music & heard a lot of similarity with use of notes in Raag and Scottish folk music - although the interpretations are completely different. Your music focuses a lot more on the spaces around the notes than our music does.

@AnujaK2010 жыл бұрын
Arunkumar M Thanks a lot! Deciphering the notation of a composition is like deciphering the spelling of a word. It requires training of a specific manner. You might try to rote learn the notations of commonly heard phrases. Also beginning by rote learning the notations of a bandish/ song might help. Your mind must be thorough with the distance of swaras with each other. Only then will it be able to recognise the swaras :)

Hello Anuja, Many thanks for your efforts in spreading the knowledge of Indian classical, Hindustani Shastriya and Carnatic sangeet! I have watched upto 12 of your episodes and the way the basics were explained by you, your eminent guests was amazing. I am loving the learning. If you get chance, could you explain what are below concepts- What is a pakad of a raaga, with some demonstration; What are "thaats" and their relation to raagas; and demonstrations of some noted raagas with their aaroha, avaroha and how to sing those aaroha avaroha; Also I am trying to learn like How to identify what are the swaras in a given words of a song/vocal composition. That would be amazing. Thanks again.
