I like how the mecha in this aren't gamechangers beyond their cheapness and utility. They don't just shrug off high calibre weapons and artillery, but they they literally cost rocks and the lives of their pilots, so they can fill a niche in war that didn't exist until they were introduced. It's a very interesting concept.

Its how mechs would always be handled. No massive guns or indestructible armor, but flexible, nimble, light to mediumly armored weapon platforms that can garrison behind cover and return fire with something like a .50 cal or 40mm or larger for anti armor. Watching people discredit mechs because they expect it to do a tank's job is just frustrating. Use it instead like a heavy infantry unit and it works wonders.

Yes, it was eventually corrupted by things like ratings and cross-promotion, toy sales and the like (they were forced to add primary colors to the design of the first Gundam because it was thought that it would increase toy sales) but the core is there. Your question is already answered within the lore of the Universal Century. They did have transitional technology (like the RB-79 "Ball"), and they retained old fighter technology as well. The use of more complex anthropomorphic designs is also explained, and yes, it does require some suspension of disbelief, but it's not a crazy fantasy. The story so far from my understanding: Aliens want to trade, stones for exo. It helps and wrecks humanity (better productivity but major companies falling) and Sankt-Gallen treaty was made to prevent exo to be used as weapons. However the treaty only applies for countries, so private securities starts using them. Like this Scar Guy (whoever his name), he built a mercenary army and operates around the world. India thought they were Pakistanis who ignored the treaty, so India did it too. And then more and more countries left the treaty like India for their own security.
@digital.phantom9425 жыл бұрын
First, in the second episode, aliens began contacting humanity via devices like tv and radio. They said they’re contacting using 5 languages, and they want rock salt. They will trade certain amount of salt (forgot how many kg) with their ‘technology’. This technology are the humanoid shaped tech called exo. Since rock salt are relatively cheap, many people got them and used them for man power such as farms and constructions. Military didn’t look at this as useful military option so they ignored getting them, until the terrorist attack that destroyed the river bridge and using them as kamikaze bombs. (Reference second episode?) This is when India began to use exo as possible military weapon, being one of the first in the world to include exo as military weaponry (reference the snow episode) As time went on, mercenary and other companies (guerrilla?) began using exo as weapons too. (The mercenary company Cerberus episode). In this one, kids who’s been kidnapped are thrown into the exo to attack the army in India(?) but most fails because of artillery and tanks. At the end, the man with the scar says he will train the kids to become warriors. I think this is the beginning of the group who are the bad guys in the first episode.
@digital.phantom9425 жыл бұрын
Along with the cost and things, I don't remember exactly but one of the episodes said that they can get one exoframe for few hundred dollars (because that's how cheap rock salts are) From the Cerberus mercenary episode, the leader said the bomb is the expensive one. The exoframes are much cheaper, and the humans are the dirt cheapest in such kamikaze bombing.

International Man of Mystery Miyajima Rei (if that is his real name) visits the Indian Army unit on Siachen Glacier to learn from them, he engages a "Pakistani" EXO force though the Pakistani EXOs have a Skull unit symbol on them. Also in 2016: a warlord in Sub-Saharan Africa is using child soldiers to pilot EXOs against a conventional enemy army**. 2017: Since most national militaries continue to abide by the Sankt Gallen Agreement, PMCs which are apparently not bound by the Agreement are thriving. 2016-2021: Jamal joins Major Zahir's army*** and fights in conflicts in Sub-Saharan Africa 2023: US Special Forces use EXOs to covertly intervene in a South American conflict****. *The timing on Episode 2 (with the ambushed tanks) and Episode 3 (the first mention of the Sankt Gallen Agreement) suggests an incredibly rapid international response to the militarization of EXOs and more comprehensively than the Paris Agreement too. **This seems likely to be the US or a US backed army. ***Major Zahir's EXO uses the same skull symbol as on the EXO in episode 3 on the "Pakistani" EXO. This is a great episode. 1st, it's easy to see child soldiers getting equiped with exoframes as they are that cheap. It also grounds this series in reality as child soldiers are common today in underdeveloped countries. 2nd. The exoframe isnt automatically better then a tank. With forewarning and range a tank can destroy exoframes easily. The creators of this series are fairly tactically minded as compared to other mecha anime. These mechs do not trump tanks by sheer fact that they are mechs. 3rd. I dont know if it was intended This, but this subverts a common mecha and anime trope. Just because kids fight in war doesnt make "instant elite warriors". Too often in anime do I see young kids defeating superiors in both age, experience, and strength by sheer fact they are a stupid mcguffin thing like being a "new type" or just the fact they have "youthful vigor " or something even more inane like "kids aren't jaded and are more hopeful " and that somehow makes it so we should listen to them/let them lead us. Spoilers, but no kids run any countries today or lead their armies, because kids are ignorant and inexperienced and deserve none of the praise or obsession they get in media and especially anime.
