Save the branches and use them in the bottom of your raised beds. Look into Hugelkulture. It is a system of using rotting logs, sticks leaves and clippings in the bottom of the raised beds with soil on top. Your land is perfect for it.

Have you ever considered modifying the roof on the 'chopped' end, so that it has the same profile as the original mansard? I think that would go a long way toward making the demolished section less obvious. You could also do a tromp l'oeil mural on the concrete end wall to emulate the architecture of the rest of the chateau, to add visual interest and make it blend with the older architecture.
@maryquinn52603 жыл бұрын

Whichever design you choose please make sure the curtain poles are long enough. You need to allow at least 8" on either side between the edge of window and the pole side support. This allows the curtain to hang without loosing any light. If the curtains are interlined, which helps with temperature and is what would have been hung, possibly more than 8". Good luck. 😎

Phil, on that plastered chimney on the end of the attic. When I have difficulty reading something like that, I take a number of different photos, then, with a paint program on the computer, I enlarge the image until I can see the ridges. This helps to define the dips of a pen or a stick that might have been used to sign a name, a year or doodle. Above the 1885 date, I see the word "valise" - French for 'suitcase' or 'trunk' On the vertical I was able to decipher "charpentier" under the line at the edge of the plaster. The name is "M. Robert (Mr. Robert) Clément" The large horizontal word, at least what I can see, is "Charpent..." then I see "Bertrand Louis Bouillon, charpentier- 1870" The best way to preserve deteriorating plasterwork with names is sometimes only in photos. Maybe try light at different angles. It would bring out the dips in the plaster.

The French love to pollard their trees, something we rarely ever see here in the US. They used the branches to start their fires without deforesting the landscape. The huge calluses seemed so odd looking at first, but I soon got used to seeing them all over the Loire Valley where I lived.

Can anyone explain the purpose of pollarding trees? It seems to be very common in France but we just don’t do that here in the US. We are trained “the right plant for the place”, so minimal pruning is optimal. The only thing similar here is what we call “crape murder” where some folks cut crape myrtles back this way. It’s so unattractive, I think. That staircase is beautiful and so surprising that it only leads to the attic!
