In this episode, Dr. Shawn Tassone discusses a recent study published in the Journal of the North American Menopause Society that challenges the previous negative views on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for women over the age of 65. The study found that HRT, specifically estrogen therapy, beyond the age of 65 is associated with significant risk reductions in mortality, breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, congestive heart failure, venous thromboembolism, atrial fibrillation, heart attacks, and dementia. The study also highlighted the importance of individualized hormone therapy, lower doses, and non-oral routes of administration for optimal health outcomes.

My mom stayed on estrogen only until her mid-80s. She finally was pressured to quit in her 80s and BOOM- a few months later she suffered a massive heart attack. She did survive. She also developed colon cancer about 3-4 years after quitting, she also survived stage 4. She’s fine now. She now looks 70, not 96. I followed her lead, getting on a low dose after my hysterectomy at age 40. You will have to pry my estrogen from my cold, dead hands. I never plan on giving it up. I’m 62, I look 50, and I feel great!

Such an interesting and informative utube. Thank you Dr Tassone. Strangely I have not been on any estrogen, only progesterone cream for 6 years. I’m about to turn 65. People don’t believe me. They question me about my age, saying but your skin? I do take good care of myself, my skin. However my jowls are saggy! 😁And I’ve had cfs then impacted by the spike over the past 3 years, so perhaps sleeping a lot and eating very clean, barely any alcohol, and mostly organic and g/d/ free for 13 years has helped? Regrettably my joints are a mess with arthritis, so will start on bioidentical oestrogen now and see if this improves tendons/joints/ collagen. Love reading all your comments beautiful Women! Love from Australia🙏🏽💖🌸

@@noellerilleau6529 More recent records/evaluations seem to indicate a small reduction in breast cancer with estrogen use. My life has been healthy beautiful and enjoyable for 25 years on low dose estrogen only oral pill. Still juicy skin and vagina. Feeling brilliant I am sure promotes good health all over. l've been on HRT patches since perimenopause in my late forties. I was suffering mainly from a worrying decline in mental acuity. I'm now 80 and have never stopped using transdermal patches. So that's over 30 years. Some doctors have tried to talk me out of it. I changed doctors. I have no osteoporosis. My bones are as they were when I was forty. I can think clearly and still do website building, music production, book editing and so on. I can run and walk for miles. My hair is thick and healthy and hasn't thinned like that of other women my age and younger. I am on no other medication. There are many other benefits. I will never go off HRT as long as I live. People think I'm only 60. It's amazing. Don't let anyone talk you out of it... unless you have extenuating health issues.

I wish there could be a class action lawsuit against the Women's Health Initiative and NAMS. I only took HRT for two years after menopause at age 52, and just now, age 69, had a compression fracture of my spine while skiing because I developed osteoporosis. After never smoking, not drinking, no stomach issues, no soda, and running hundreds of miles training for marathons. Turns out, estrogen is CRUCIAL for bone health. Now my husband and all my friends are out skiing and riding their mountain bikes while I sit at home knitting.

I'm 76 and have never taken any hormones or anything. I seem to be in great condition - aside from an old knee injury that doesnt hurt. Menopause came and went without incident - not one hot flash, nothing. I'd always loved my Periods and regarded them as an indication of overall health...was concerned what would happen when they ceased? NOTHING happened. Body continued to balance and regulate itself. I've never been overweight and never dieted. I don't eat junk food or processed food. I do take a few Vitamins. I've avoided the medical system all my life, but had an evaluation in late 2020. PCP advised low fat low salt diet - and i tried briefly abd lost some weight and subcutaneous fat. That's when the smooth youthful facial contours changed. That's the last time I saw a doctor...I regained the lost weight but not the smooth face. I suppose I lost my sex drive some years ago - but that seems to be due to lack of sufficiently interesting men of suitable age...Which is OK. I like my single life now!

You are absolutely correct regarding scaring an entire generation of doctors. I go to a female dr and she was absolutely against me going on bio-identicals. I went to her for my gynecological and breast exams but went elsewhere for HRT. I told her and she was not happy about it but she was very active about me getting mammograms. I was happy to do. Around my 8th year of being on the bio-identicals I had a very small spot on my breast. She said it could be cancer and sent me to a breast cancer specialist. He took it out, office procedure, and said it was not cancer. It was a hard calcium deposit. I decided to stop using the HRT. I felt fine for about a year then all of a sudden I went into full menopause mode; unable to sleep, very emotional, hot flashes and no libido. I also gained 25 pounds. My reg dr put me on anti-depressants. I felt like I had no energy to exercise. This went on for 3 years. Last year at the age of 69, I had enough. I went to a different HRT dr and was given lots of choices. I chose to give myself a shot twice a week with 1.5 ml of estradiol and 30 mg of progesterone capsule nightly. I also give myself a shot of testerone ( 1.5 ml once a week). After a couple of months, I felt great. I feel like myself and I’ve started going to the local gym and walking daily. Also, my bone density was great while I took HRT. Two yeas after stopping bio-identicals, there was a decrease. My latest test showed no decrease. I will be 70 next month and I feel great.

Many hysterectomy surgeries are UNNECESSARY. Just surgeons & hospitals making $$$. I refused a hysterectomy 3x, ( different doctors, different issues) all 3 x I was determined to NOT have cancer, after the initial scare. Just early menopause and fibroids. Medical practice in USA is horrific, especially for women overcage 30. I grew up in a hospital. My mother was a nurse. I have way more knowledge than average person. It is absolutely horrible how bad practice of medicine in USA actually is. Frightening in fact.

Thank you for this video! I’m part of that generation of women that were scared to death of estrogen therapy. When menopause systems got bad enough, I did use estradiol cream for a time. Then decided I should take a long break due to the “risks” associated with use. Of course the symptoms returned affecting me and ultimately my husband who put up with a lot! Finally, I decided enough was enough and returned to using the estradiol. So many women have suffered unnecessarily as have their partners.

I was on 1 mg of estradiol daily after total hysterectomy, I also was newly diagnosed with MS. When I turned 55 my doctor took me off of estradiol because I was told women need to stop hormone therapy at 55 because of the risk of breast cancer. Shortly after my MS went off the charts and I begged my doctor to put me back on the estradiol. (I would rather have breast cancer than deal with what MS was doing to me) Like magic my MS was back under control. I discontinued the $26,000.00 monthly infusions for my MS (my Neurologist told me I would be in a wheelchair within 2 years if I did not continue). I continued with just 1 mg of Estradiol per day at $20.00 per month cost and I am still able to walk and have a good amount of quality of life for a person with MS. I was told 13 years ago that I was crazy for thinking Estradiol helped my MS. WELL guess what>>> now I am seeing studies claiming how hormone therapy HELPS women with MS...GREED did not want me to stop the MS medications because of the high profit companies make on MS medication. IT IS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!!!!

Well done! I"m 75 years old, a retired Ob/GYn nurse practitioner (I was one of the first, many moons ago) and completely agree with all you say! I had a radical hysterectomy at age 40(that's another story...invasive cervical cancer 6 mos after a normal pap smear) so went into "instant menopause". I did some research and got OFF the Premarin immediately and ended up on Estratest for many years. When they took that off the market, I switched to Estradiol (now on 0.5mg of oral) and 4 mg of oral testosterone (From a compounding pharmacy) At one point I worked for the Women's Health Initiative and couldn't understand why they used Premarin and Provera -awful choices. Anyway, I plan on staying on my HRT until I leave the Earth Plane = I see a Family Practice doc now for primary care and he's fine with whatever I want to do....so I'll keep him around. It's just refreshing to see a Ob/Gyn who has some common sense...many thanks.

I am beyond happy to have found your episode 86! Although I knew (based on my independent research) that the WHI led us astray, I now have something to bring with me to my doctor's appointment on Friday! When I asked for HRT from my GP and then my OBGYN saying I'd like the bioidentical HRT, my OBGYN said quote, "Oh, you're done." I'm done? Uh, no...I'm not. The compromise offered was vaginal estradiol cream. However, my kind yet direct response was, "My entire body deserves the benefits of estradiol, not just my vagina." (I'm 56) My upcoming appointment on Friday is with someone else.

I went into menopause exactly when this old study came out. I knew my doctor wanted me off my birth control pill. So I got BHRT elsewhere and have been taking it ever since. I am 71 and run as fast as an untrained thirty year old, have zero meno symptoms. I look so young people assume I am late forties. I went to get my Covid jab last year which in the uk is now only given to over 70s. The nurse checked over my paperwork and said there had to be a mistake and was going to reject me. She was stunned. My mother went through her Change with no treatment and never slept through the night again, had heart failure and high blood pressure. My mother in law is now suffering from all the symptoms of lack of oestrogen. She has dementia, had awful joint problems requiring surgery is depressed and shrinking fast. Personally I hate progesterone so I do the very least I can. Everything is topical. The other thing I love about the topical route is it is so easily ramped up or down depending on other factors.

Thank heavens, a new, and better study. Former studies using horse urine derivatives didn't help me. I was on BI-EST with .325 estrogen, two types plus 100 mcg (or mg?) Progesterone and did fine for 8 years. Three things then happened: my insurance would no longer cover my Rx for Bi-Est so my doctor put me on horse estrogen again without me understanding that, Second, after a few years on that estrogen I was given a huge accidental overdose. Apparently the compounding pharmacy hired a new pharmacist who didn't know the product had to be cut. I took it for about 2 weeks and had wild symptoms before realizing what was happening. I stopped it and went through a period of massive bleeding (in my 70's) and had a D&C. Thirdly, my grandchild had been murdered a few years before and the grief can dispose one to breast cancer. So I developed a cancerous lump and had surgery and radiation. Subsequently I was taken off BHRT completely with no doctor ever making any distinction about the factors above, especially the difference in the types of estrogen and progesterone being given. I did fine on the Bi-est and a small dose really helped me. I have definitely gone downhill and now 9 years later I still want my estrogen back! I have a connective tissue disease and estrogen is instrumental in making collagen, helping with brain function and energy. It worked in concert with my other hormones, thyroid, adrenal, etc so that I could be reasonably active. It doesn't cure everything but I intend to find a willing doctor and get it back!

I had my last kids at 40 and 41 and stayed youngish until certain powers that be decided I wasn’t worth their consideration. I’m 70. I wanted to pursue my dreams and have a comfortable sex life and celebrate life with five kids and six grandkids and a business. I’m glad to have found your channel.

Find a Bioidentical hormone replacement center/clinic/practice etc. Steer away from traditional docs that dabble, must specialize not just do hormones on the side. Most legit will be naturopathic doc's or nurse practitioners.

The problem I face (49 years old and in perimenopause) is finding an on/gyn that is not dismissive. My experience with my first conversation with my doc was dismal, and I felt embarrassed the way I was treated and talked to. I wish I could find a great doc.

Thank you, thank you! I've been feeling bad for at least 5 years and was diagnosed with depression last winter but worked out via KZbin menopause videos that it is probably menopause - at 58. It has never been suggested to me that I go on hormones. I had to ask for it. Have been on estradiol for several months and not feeling much change other than sore breasts. Will watch more of your vids to better arm myself with info when I see my NP. I really want to feel much better - feel some enthusiasm, drive and energy again.

But this was my “in formed “ GPs take on hormones- Finally referred to women’s clinic and back on. Current provider is still nervous about me being on at age 68.

Refreshing approach, doc. This has opened my eyes just in time for an upcoming first appt with a functional medicine MD. I trust natural medicine first, so bioidentical was always going to be my choice, but the scares about hrt prevented me from doing anything at all. Thank you for your love for women's health. USA medicine is very sexist and mysogynist to this day. Also, i like the way you freely express yourself emotionally and with atrong language which to me reinforces the urgency of your message. To me, it's endearing. I've subscribed and will take this info with me to my appointment.

I have had to fight tooth and nail regarding taking estradiol…I’ve tried taking studies to show my doctor and in the end had to change doctors…twice! I have been taking a very low dose of estradiol (ingested) for at least 20 years or maybe more, and I feel and have always felt that it contributes to my overall wellbeing. I had a hysterectomy at 35, am now 85 and still in good health, still active and as my new doctor says (female by the way as was the one who refused to write my prescription)/ that I’ m 85, feel and look and act 65, and as she said, I must be doing something right! Nice to hear a doctor who obviously has studied this subject to great depth. I just have to go by the way I feel….by the way, no heart trouble of any kind, no breast or any other kind of cancer. Thanks for speaking up about this!!!

I was given a full hysterectomy at 24. Doctor Becton didnt put me on any hormones but he did leave surgical equipment that was found after a car wreck 15 years later. I called his office and he went to prison for photographing all of us ladies while on the table. Now in 49 and having major problems with my joints, swelling, and constant (over 20 years now) night sweats. Soak the sheets stuff. With no insurance, I'm at the mercy of nature and can get no remedies. Anything natural i can pick and eat? You doctors cost too much. And im not talking about just money.

I am 78 yes old and I’m still on HRT! The world has stress and mine has been amplified 1000% in the last three years. Unfortunately, I have been self medicating my dose and pretty much cut it in half. I take Progesterone once every week or two, not daily like it was originally prescribed. Did you know that if you put a small amount topically on the face, it greatly helps getting rid of wrinkles and many other anti-aging problems? (Estrogen). From what I understand, and I’m not a doctor, women need to bleed from the Progesterone and in the beginning, when I started taking it, the doctors thought it had to be daily. Then, there was a medical discussion about waiting and bleeding once a month. I chose to do what my body told me and so far❤. I just was diagnosed with a skin cancer and I live in Texas and Acapulco. I also have been extremely active, until I couldn’t be. I ran 6 miles a day, 6 days a week. When I could, I played two hours of singles tennis, with the pro, and then went to play 36 holes of golf…until 3 years ago! I thought I was the norm and everyone else was lazy or didn’t like the out doors nor exercise. I think it was with the help of HRT and genetics. My mother took Premerin for 40+ years and died of breast cancer, which she had for 8 years and she was on a natural drug from Tegulsigalpa Honduras. Unfortunately I believe Big Pharma has removed availability. The drug is Anversil, and it only works on solid tumors. My mother lived until 94 and traveled and had a wonderful life for 8 years with no side effects except energy and appetite! Not bad😅 for a drug made from Oleander! Do you still take new patients and do you believe in natural remedies also? Thank you for your incredible honesty in this world where honesty is not always welcomed nor accepted. I’m a new follower!!!

Don’t forget, it’s not just estrogen. Women naturally have more testosterone than estrogen. Our estrogen is made from testosterone. Women have about 1/10 of the testosterone men have, but that little bit is very important for energy, muscle mass, and libido.
