Came here for Pink Floyd.. Not disappointed. Richard Wright imo is the greatest keyboardist in music of our time. He could write and compose like no one else, and could ENGINEER sounds like most have never done. The Leslie on the grand piano in echoes.. all of our beloved organ sounds.. the synths all over wish you were here.. the live recreation of the studio synths and keys, on the run (even though I think Roger came up with it), the division bell, and of course the endless river.. Unf. We miss you Rick.

Well said. He was arguably the most important member of the band. Roger kicked him out of the band for The Wall and that album is (almost) completely shit. When most people think of Pink Floyd, they think of Wrights amazing sound design (whether they know it or not).

@@tpete096 By the time Roger fired Rick, he had actually put his influence in the band. The Final Cut which doesn't feature Rick at all, still has some very nice organ (played by Michael Kamen) in the way Rick would play them. Even nowadays, if you listen to Roger's solo songs, they sound like Rick Wright has done all the keyboard. His great influence is there, in every Pink Floyd members' songs.

“The Minimoog kind of became my M16 rifle. That’s the synth that, to this day, you could blindfold me and say ‘All right, we want a white-noise puffball with one sine wave wiggling at about 90bpm through the middle of it,’ and I could sit there and dial it in. I learned it that well." (Mark Mothersbaugh, 2010)

Numan is an interesting case probably for the whole music industry. He was punk/post-punk performer, discovered synthesizer by accident (anecdote says it was forgotten by other band in the studio), and reworked his guitar-based songs to synth-driven sound. Basically he started synth-pop revolution

It's like Snoop and Dave Chappelle vocal boxes had a synth guru baby. I love this tutorial and the host. Reverb, please keep making these videos, they are fantastic! Everything was solid but the Shine On synth patch had too much LFO/modulation (sounded more like a patch that Vangelis would have used), the song's original brass synth is so smooth, no harsh fluttering. But if that's the biggest criticism, then you are doing a bang up job amigo! Very nice!

I was given a hand written sheet from a Roadie of Devo on how Mark Mothersbaugh does the Smart Patrol sound, its all in the glide and using a reverse sawtooth wave... As for resetting the glide to go back to the first note without fully gliding back down, i've found a glitch in my Sub Phatty (The Moog i own and use for these sounds) to where if you release the high note first, before hitting the end note, it resets the whole glide exactly like the album... Mothersbaugh's synth however, was modified to do this without a glitch, and was modded with a reverse sawtooth, which is now present in most newer Moogs, and in the Behringer Model D... However the glide trick is hard to do without mods unless you find a glitch that does exactly that, like i did :)
@horowizard
@horowizard 5 жыл бұрын
@Josh Wizinsky Every Model D ever made had that reverse sawtooth waveform on the third oscillator as stock. It was not a modification. As I mentioned before, there was a foot switch to engage the Glide which would have made that reset move easier.

To do that sound properly, turn the glide up to 10, turn the modulation wheel all the way up, and don't worry about the pitch wheel. The rest of the patch is great :-) With glide switch off, hit low f. Turn glide switch on. Then hit high c. To reverse the sound, all you have to do is hit high C first and then low f. You need to turn the glide switch off to reset the sound, so to speak. I helped my late husband Synthfool with many a Minimoog, including three for Devo. I'm a huge Devo fangirl and got to watch Mark Mothersbaugh play this sound for me to demonstrate the issue he was having with his Mini, which was modded to add more modulation. :)

Love these sounds, and god damn love that mini. An observation: in the first sound, if you set the sustain level of the filter envelope (or any envelope for that matter) at it's maximum level, whatever time you set to the decay is irrelevant. Decay times can only be heard when the sustain level is lower than 100%, since the initial value of all decay portions in ADSR envelopes is already 100%.

These are amazing! Thank you William. Would so love to get an episode featuring the synth sounds used on Milton Writes Keep it up. Possibly my favourite little synth riffs of all time.

Old enough to remember hearing 'Flashlight' at the local disco (which is what they used to call clubs). And pretty much the same band was also doing 'One Nation under A Groove' at the same time. I lived through the funk golden age. Back to synths, the Softube Legend is the best emulation I've heard.

The Legend is definitely the best, but it's by Synapse (not Softube). I can see why you'd think so, though, since Softube's emulations are also amazing.

Surprised that nobody mentioned Rick Wakeman. One of the first to popularize the Minimoog. He used three of them on stage in the early 70's.

Very cool! Could you tackle that synth lead from Summer Madness (Kool & the Gang)? I have seen TV shows where the keyboardist is playing an Arp 2600 but I'm not sure what was used on the record.

I have the Behringer Poly D and this works great on it too. Thank you so much, because I always loved that Brass sound, but wasn't able to recreate it until I saw your video.
