Just had same thing happen to me right below campus at sb, two weeks ago, thought it was the elusive ghost, fought just like yours here, got em in, it was a 40” leopard 😂! So bummed
@VINCEGOESFISHING9 ай бұрын
Landed a 55” leopard last May. It didn’t fight anything like this. It peeled a lot of drag but not nearly as fast and not such distinct runs. The White Sea Bass has much faster, more powerful runs. Also if you get a hook in a leopard it won’t likely pop the hook out like this. Also we got a look at this fish when it jumped. It had the profile and tail of a tail, not a shark.

Depending on when you were fishing it could have been a yellowtail, I’ve seen yellowtail just beyond the 1st breaker and in like 10-15 ft of water. Also kinda fought like a yellowtail.

That was epic. I don’t know what you could have done different I don’t think you muscled him to much to cause that hook to cut through the mouth. Now you know you their out there.. good day!!!
@VINCEGOESFISHING3 жыл бұрын
Ya buddy, I didn't muscle him at all. If anything maybe he spit the hook cuz my drag was too loose. But ya.. you wins some, you lose some. I'm gonna get the next big WSB that bites! I really want to kill big one. Full on hunter energy in my blood about this. Gonna be out there endless hours waiting for one to come along and bite. That was a really lucky bite on saturday... in like 3' of water... maybe 40' off the sand... just mind blowing. I wish you had been there to see it leap out of the water. Dude... so big.. so powerful! Scary big.

Its cool how you speak your mind in these videos and share your thought process with us. Thanks for sharing! Loving the videos. What kind of hook/weight are you using? Is that still the zman slam shady?
@VINCEGOESFISHING3 жыл бұрын
Thank for this comment. I feel really comfortable speaking on cam and I want to share my learning experience with all of you. I really prefer the Owner Beast hooks. They are weighted hooks. 1/8oz. Its a 4/0 hook. And I add a 1/4 ounce bullet on top of that so it equals 3/8oz total. Thats what I do 90% of the time for my smaller baits like 4"-5". For larger baits like 5.8" Keitch, I use a 6/0 owner beast, and I add enough lead to equal 1/2oz. With this 3/8oz-1/2oz schematic your baits will fall nice and slow, so you can swim them slow without getting snagged on bottom. If there is a lot of current or wind you may stick to the smaller sized bait with more weight, maybe 5/8oz or 3/4oz. The idea is... I'm trying to drag on bottom as slow as possible without getting snagged. Also, keep in mind, Im fishing south-facing beaches, protected from most of the waves, so the waves are usually tiny. Maybe on a west-facing beach, I might use more weight. Good luck man! :)

Vincent I don’t think the fish came off, I think the way it was fighting it might have ripped part of its lip off and was able to escape.
@VINCEGOESFISHING3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's very possible. They hav soft mouths so if you don't get em deep in the cheek, there's a chance they can tear free if your drag isn't loose enough. This Okuma Conneseuir rod is so stiff, it takes a lot of pressure to keep the rod bent so they can't spit the hook, so it was a catch 22. I lost a lof of fish for this reason. That's why I started looking for a new rod. I'm now experimenting with a 10'6" SST Medium, and a 9'6" North Coast MH.

It had a big fish tail like a halibut or white seabass. Not like a shark. All I saw was white, straight like a plank of plywood, and I saw the tail. I think maybe Austin saw the tail also.

Depending on the spot it could’ve been a huge striper. Really rare but it’s happened to me on the most unexpected day lol
@VINCEGOESFISHING2 жыл бұрын
That is a possibility. It would be all white on bottom, and would have a similar fish tail. They have been known to pass through that spot. But more frequently, so have the big White Sea Bass. Good call

4.75" Rage Swimmer. White belly, brown back. It's a money bait! With 4/0 Owner Beast Weighted Swimbait hook (1/8oz). And then I add a 1/4oz bullet weight on top of that so it's 3/8oz total. Swims through the water column at a nice pace.

It probably would not have bit if I was wading deep... It was a learning experience! Back out, and fish the shallow water as well as the deep.
