I went out and bought the same water top off MD has. Within a day, a curious snail decided to crawl on top of the bottom float and push it down, causing the pump to activate. If I wasn’t in the room, the tank would have overflowed. So word to the wise, if you have snails, make sure that upper backup float is BELOW the rim (mine wasn't because i like a high water level), or go with an optical version to avoid disaster

Thanks to you MD, I can work around the issues I have had with my 1st build, lol. You make it user friendly, there are solutions for problems, like lighting for me and my substrate was distributed by my hardscape in an area i didnt realize in back. Everything about water quality has sorted itself but it's time to fix it and break it down and redo. Again, thanks to you, it's a manageable thing after watching you for so long, I'm not anxious about it. 😅 this is the type of tank I'm going for, self sustaining. there right, when tank water evaporates it leaves mineral content behind, topping up with tap water will gradually increase the tds and water will get harder, personally I only top off with RO on my tanks I use this method with, all other tanks I do weekly water changes on. this probably won't ever be a issue for you tho as most of your tanks dont last longer then a year before you tear them down lol

But then, don't plants use minerals to grow right, And once the tank really starts going, there is lots of trimming and thus mineral removal in the tank. That sounds right in my head, but I could be completely wrong. 🤣 I shall measure TDS and parameters every episode from now on. It's not something I usually do but will do it to give everyone more info.

The rate of use will likely not be equal to 1:1 ratios between the minerals which will still overtime lead to a builtup of some. Its not rocket science. Plants change colors as a response to many different environmental factors. What you are observing is the difference between genotype and phenotype. Phenotype is the way plant genetics adapt to your specific environment. Because there are so many variable components to an ecosystem we don't know specifically why my Rotala looks different than your Rotala but we know that it will.

Technically they're right about the RO top off water as the only thing that evaporates is the pure water with a TDS of basically 0. But if you're working with only 100 TDS water and you've got a ton of plants that are also absorbing dissolved solids as they grow, you can probably get away with it for a long time. Might be a fun experiment to just log TDS over time to see how much it changes or doesn't change.

So I then bought 2 10 gallon tall skinny tanks and put 4 guppies in each. 1 male and 3 female in each. Planted the tanks and now I have about 60 guppies and am looking for another large tank so I can give them more room. The guppies were just random colors from my local pet store and I ended up with these amazing fluorescent pink and yellow in one tank and my other tank I got really long fin males with a cool blue and green snake skin / leopard print on them. I want to try and pull them and see if I can get them to breed this specific color and do some trades with my local fish shop. Thank you for the fish tank addiction.!!

It’s not so much a matter of the African cichlids eating the plants, it’s more the fact that plants don’t get enough light to grow at the depth in the Rift Lakes where those fish naturally occur. Fish species which didn’t evolve in heavily vegetated areas may not even view live plants as a natural food source, therefore it only makes sense that they wouldn’t eat them. It’s really a matter of personal aesthetic, if the person wants to create a 100% bio-accurate scape with just rocks & wood or use artistic license. Incorporating plants into the scape has dispelled a long-held belief for other aquarists who may wish to use them with African Rift Lake species. 👍🏻

If you top up with tap water for long enough and don't do any water changes, you can run into issues eventually, but your tap water is 3.5x softer than mine and your evaporation rate is way lower, therefore I don't think you will ever keep a tank set up long enough to worry about it. If I do no waterchanges in 6 months my tanks TDS is off the scale (999ppm after 20% waterchange), PH is high, plants and shrimp suffer. To keep my TDS around 400ppm, I just waterchange about 2x the amount I need to top up by.

MD, what about the mud skippers you were going to try wayyyy back? I think it was pre-covid and you were thinking on newt tank and a mudskipper tank and supplies were scarce. I think you'd pull off one heck of a mud skipper tank as it's both terrestrial and aquatic plants? Idk what your interest in that would be, lol. I also was thinking about bulb plants, I think the lotus and lillies look amazing in tanks, as a touch here and there, what would a "pond" tank look like, lotus and lilly forward, of course with other plants that go shallow to deeper water, Iike a pond you see in nature? There's a few by me that have cove like spots covered with lilly pads and I'm waiting for the blossoms to bloom, but it's definitely visually different with the cove and then open water as it gets deeper. Maybe one of the long, shallower tanks? Idk, I just had a thought. 😂 there are also SO MANY TURTLE'S in one of the farm ponds, it's so wonderful to see they're thriving and see them out sunning on the rocks as you drive by. Timmy's American cousins, lol. They are definitely not large turtle's and in the Spring i keep gloves so we can pick up any turtle's in the road and put them in the direction they're going so they don't get hit, we even have turtle crossing signs and people reminding everyone that its breeding time and to be careful not to hit them. Wow, a long comment, I know, but I had a few different thoughts 😂😂😂

Using RO water for auto topoffs is NECESSARY for salt water. It's still better in freshwater from a chemical perspective, but you have WAY more wiggle room. So, if the mineral load in your tapwater is relatively low, it's probably ok not to use RO. Especially in a tank this large where your volume:surface area ratio is so high. Also, cover your auto topoff container. Obviously evaporation is going to be minimal inside the cabinet, but there's no reason to leave it open when it's so easy to just put a loose lid over it.

To be fair, your tanks seem to get reset often, so that none of them are more than 2 years old -- possibly a lot younger? So, you won't have a chance to experience the effects of "old tank syndrome:" which you would get from repeatedly topping off with tap water instead of RO. Perhaps you might have a tank that you'll wish to keep much longer some day, in that case, you should consider RO water as your top off water. Just some food for thought. Lovely tank!

Green neon tetras (Paracheirodon simulans) live in morichales (warm water palm swamps) which are dominated by moriche palms and filled with light coloured sand, terrestrial grasses and leaf litter. Pencilfish (Nannostomus unifasciatus) would be a great addition but they are little rocket ships and would require a lid or lower water levels and loads of floaters. Dwarf cichlids are also found there notably Mikrogeophagus ramirezi (blue rams) and Apistogramma hoignei. These are the smaller fish that could work well with the neons but there are loads of other fish. I keep Dicrossus filamentosus (checkerboard cichlids) with my green neons as they both prefer the warmer waters and checkers are the best of all dwarf cichlids! I learnt most of this by listening to The Tint podcast and reading their blog (loads of photos) and by reading Ivan Mikolji’s wonderful book on the Rio Orinoco! Tai will also have many directions to point you towards!

Do a ram tank

I've done battle with duckweed before; I'd recommend any other floating plant instead. Trust me, it's nice to have floating plants but duckweed isn't one of them. Get dwarf water lettuce, salvinia, frogbit, or literally anything else instead.

Are you limited to what kind of fish you could use in a set up like this?
@fishtake23304 ай бұрын
@MDFishTanks Super random question but did you make that tool you (re)fill your aquariums with yourself or is that a product that exists on the market? I've seen Python hooks etcetera but nothing looks as industrial grade as yours :) Thanks

yeah made it myself from an old filter inlet

@@MDFishTanks Awesome thank you, i have a 25 ft water changing hose and it's too short to stay in the aquarium might have to create something similar.

Im doing a build like this at the moment. im 4 days in now, but i did put my external filter with bacteria back in because i needed my fish to go back in. Dont worry i test every day. But im noticing my phosphate is going up slowly. Is that because of the plants that need to grow so that they need more phosphate? Or could a leak of substrate be the issue? Or is it just a normal thing with new tanks?

I started a tank same time. I am however doing water changes. But have been hit today by what I think if a cyano bacteria bloom. Not sure how to get rid of it yet

No fertilizers? CO2?

How would you control the fish population long term? Id figure the tanks can only support a certain amount of fish, and youre looking for frys from some of the fish.

Would love to see you try and breed amanos
@GenuineUntelligence4 ай бұрын
I think they only breed in brackish water?
@johnnydubbsaquascaping4 ай бұрын
@@GenuineUntelligence correct, brackish water with a certain salt percentage for amano breeding. I think thats why no one breeds them as you would need a very specific set up 😀

So how isnt your glass getting full with algae?
@MDFishTanks4 ай бұрын
got the lighting levels correct and the plants growing fast. This means minimal available nutrients for algae to grow as they need food. The plants get them first. Any left is used by the algae and then the critters graze on it.
