EPSolar have released this new accessory for their range of solar charge controllers. This little blue box connects your RS485 enabled EPSolar / EPEver solar charge controller to your android tablet or phone. Once connected it allows you to edit your charging and load parameters as well as monitor how your battery and solar panels are performing using the android app.
I've made a follow up video here which shows you can use it with the Windows software too: • Hacked EPEver Wifi to ...
EPSolar App Download: www.epsolarpv.c...
I bought this item from: www.solarenergy...
This item is also available from eBay: ebay.us/tdT1Qo
❗️These links are affiliated and I may earn a small commission if you purchase❗️
It works with the following EPSolar / EPEver solar charge controller models:
LandStar B Series
ViewStar A Series
ViewStar BN Series
Tracer A Series
Tracer BN Series
eTracer AD Series
eTracer BND Series
iTracer ND Series
It also works with the following pure sine wave inverters:
SHI Series
STI Series

As a customer support agent I used to have issues with them running rs-485 lines out doors because of lightning. Make sure the twisted paired is shielded for external use. Also a termination resistor of 50 ohm may be needed at the rs-485 end if you have issues with communication or running a longer line.

I have been through almost 10 SCC's now. Since spending the money on an EPEVER Tracer 4215BN I was able to connect my cells in 24v pairs and set them to 2s2p (4x 250w panels) finally I get the full voltage from my cells and the 12v batteries get triple the amperage they get at 24v (actually full voltage is 36-40) the controller has a max charge current of 40amp. I also have a Tracer 3215BN SCC (30amp controller) ready for my second solar system of about 780w max. Just waiting for more panels and batteries. Thank you for your reviews.

I would also look into the EPEVER eLog01. It connects to the controller then let's you connect a PC via USB cable and at the same time connect a MT50 (or Bluetooth module / WiFi module). You can also use USB extension cables if your PC isn't close by. An added benefit is it's ability to store about 3 months of data ready to download to your PC or laptop.

You can buy a secondary USB WiFi device for your computer or laptop and dedicate it to the eBox-Wifi-01, so you don't have to disconnect from your router just to monitor the eBox.

I would use the EPEVER eLog01 if I were you. I got one and it allows me to connect the MT50 and the PC via USB, it also stores about 2-3 months of data and has a button battery for backup. They are about 30£ but that depends on the seller. I cannot recommend it enough. Being able to monitor by the MT50 and the PC is a huge advantage. If needed you can use a USB extension cable or just buy a longer USB cable to suit.

I also have a direct connect cable to my laptop and it works with the 2nd controller and the 1st contoller. So I'm at a loss as to why it doesnt work with my 2nd controller. Same model number controller as well

i'm thoroughly enjoying your videos- they're very entertaining, as well as informative. You showed that you can change parameters using the Android app. Does this mean that you could use this, rather than the RS485/USB cable and PC program you used in an earlier video to customize your controller completely? Other than the cable setup being cheaper, does it have any advantages over the wireless, in terms of your system configuration? Keep up the good work.

Has anyone any luck (in the last 5 years) using the ebox-wifi-01 to connect/read non EPEver charge controllers? I have it powered up and linked to App on iOS, but "Operation Failed" pops up on every action. My charge controller at least in theory has all the data (Solar, Batteries, Load - volts and amps) broadcast through the jack as they were going to produce a remote LED monitor, but never did. Maybe better luck via the Station program?
@AdamWelchUK
@AdamWelchUK 2 жыл бұрын
I think the issue could be any number of problems. Firstly, out of the box the ebox WiFi is set as a router rather than a device, so you have to connect to its wireless network. Secondly it uses a silly fixed IP address. Third it’s using specific wires in the connector for power and comms. If you’re using the epever app then it’s trying to communicate over the modbus protocol to a specific device ID and it’s asking for statistics in specific register (or memory locations) which of cause may be totally different for another brand. It isn’t to say your setup won’t work, but it’s going to take a fair bit of tinkering, testing and possibly hardware and software changes to round off that square peg to fit in EPEvers round hole. I’d look to use a usb rs485 adapter on your pc to simplify the hardware and a modbus scanner to simplify the software. Then make a big pot of coffee and start probing addresses and seeing what comes back.

What's the point of viewing your solar or charger information on an app on your phone if the Bluetooth range is only 50m? You may as well just look at the device display. You'd probably need another device to view the app over any distance data or WiFi

Hi, trying to setup a LS1024B controller with the ebox to user battery mode I get the answer "please input right value", youknow what can be the problem? Regards. EDITED. I've found the problem, so I will write it here in case other people have the same issue. In the battery advanced mode of the app,when I choose user mode, all values change the dot for coma. I've changed again the comas to dots and then send the info and everything works fine.

Question does that add the box to your network. Cuz if you drive if that a direct link to that box if it's Wi-Fi you directly connected that sucks . That means you have to disconnect it just reconnected to your internet . The Bluetooth would be a lot better . You can have the Bluetooth of your phone sync to it and you can have the Wi-Fi to your house Wi-Fi

Pretty nifty, but like others have said, it seems a bit tedious that it can only work as an access point rather than joining an existing network. I'm guessing there's a way to tweak that behind the scenes. It reminds me of the apps for the generic RGB 'wifi' bulbs. Have you tried connecting to the box and then port sniffing it?

hi adam, have you tried monitoring two eBOX-wifi (charge controller/inverters) using the android app?
@AdamWelchUK
@AdamWelchUK 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think that will be possible. I found that the eBox Wifi had a fixed IP address as standard, and the app specifically looked for that IP address. When I changed the eBox IP address the app couldn't find it any longer to pull information from. I have now attached the eBox to my wifi network at home as a client device so I can use it to monitor my tracer from my PC. I don't use the android app anymore - so unless this has been updated I think the answer is no.

Hi Adam, I realise that this video is several years old now but when I first saw your channel I was inspired to set up a couple of 100 watt solar panels on top of my shed and I also purchased on Epever Tracer MPPT controller based on your reviews of it, I later purchased the E-box WiFi module. Unfortunately I have never to date been able to connect to the E-box from within my house. The shed is only 10 or so metres away, I can get a weak signal if I position my tablet on the window sill, but insufficient strength to connect to it and view the settings and parameters. It is supposed to have a 50 meter range but I suspect that this is just the usual Chinese hype, after all I cant see the point of having it if you have to be in the shed within a few meters of the controller. What has been your experience with the E-box WiFi module? Also if you don't mind, could you recommend a good pure sine wave inverter for my setup. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with the community.

Also the settings you have are they a set to your solar panel set up as i am just running a 50w Solar panel on the roof of my converted camper-van. Thanks for the video -

Rs485 is an open standard, so this this should work with any rs485 device and the right bit of software to interpret the returned registers - BUT - I haven’t tried it.

I would look into the EPEVER eLog01.

Good video as always I bought the EPEver eBox-ble 01 and i can't get it to connect. i tried connecting directly through bluetooth and entering the 4 digit pin 1234 or 0000' while doing this both green lights were on but it keeps saying "wrong pin" (these are the manufacturers designated pin codes). I then tried connecting directly through the app. I got bluetooth to see the device and went into the app and it couldn't see the unit ie 1 green light and nothing popped up on the app screen. Is this unit defective or am i doing something wrong,. i've tried everything the sellers tech suggested and nothing works and now the seller's saying it's my fault. Any ideas/suggestions to try before returning it as they aren't accepting responsibility and insist it's me and don't want to refund or replace the unit with a wifi version

Good Morning Congratulations for your work What is the best solution to monitor a solar system with battery through the internet with a connection (WIFI or RJ45)? In other words, how can I check the status of the battery and solar production without having to go to the installation site? I want to be able to check the status of the solar system over the internet from anywhere, how can I do it? Thanks
@AdamWelchUK
@AdamWelchUK 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The way I do it is to log the solar stats to an mqtt server - then I can query this to display the data in various places. I use my own node red dashboard to connect to a rs485 to wireless adapter which then logs to mqtt. Alternatively I recommend Colin Hickeys rs485 to WiFi solution. I monitor my stats in Grafana but use home assistant to notify me if things aren’t as they should be. EPEver do not make a solution designed to be viewed on the public internet - I guess there is too much liability if it were insecure.

+Usman Kazaure Abdullahi No, the comms can’t be turned off. How are you connecting to the ebox, pc or Android? If it’s the pc, then the issue is probably with your virtual comm port software or the configuration of the connection in the solar station monitor software.

what mean these turn on and off loads at 5v or 6v and delay??
@andrewgervais3039
@andrewgervais3039 6 жыл бұрын
I think it means when the PV input reads 5v (which means its dark outside i.e. nighttime) the load will automatically come on. When the PV input rises to 6v which would mean it getting light out or day time, the load shuts off.

Hi Adam After watching your EPEVER WiFi video I purchased one myself for my Tracer 3210A controller. My phone connects to the unit (both lights are green) however I cannot get to the screen on the app where you can choose Bluetooth or wifi. Consequently I get the message “Device disconnected”. The cable is connected OK and it works fine with the MT50 when I plug this in. Any ideas? Thanks Klaas

+Colin Hickey (Lets make stuff!) You should be smug. I am interested to see if I can get my laptop talking to this via the software serial software you suggest. Yours has a big advantage - acting as a device rather than an access point.
@Chickey
@Chickey 8 жыл бұрын
Joking aside it looks like a good product but as you mention shame it has to be an access point rather than just on your normal network. They should be able to modify that via software though so maybe they'll enable it down the line. i wonder if the app is hardcoded for the IP assigned to the device for now. I'd be interested in doing it the other way around. I can change the ESP8266 in mysetup to be an AP and give out IP's on that range so mimic the device as it where, just need to figure out the IP of the device. Oh and just as an update the adaptor i made has been working great and i've installed the software on all the pc's i use so can fire it up when i need to check something from any machine.
