One of my personal favourite Epica songs and this live performance was amazing. Great reaction to a first class band.

The Retrospect show is Epica's celebration of their tenth anniversary in March 2013. Epica performed on stage with the 70-piece Extended Hungarian Remenyi Ede Chamber Orchestra and the Choir of Miskolc National Theatre.

'I wasn't ready for it to be over' ... wait for it... BOOM.🤣 This performance was the Retrospect 10th anniversary concert in 2013. Yes, full orchestra and choir. This was song #22 of 24 in a 3 hour show. Lead singer ,Simone Simons, was about 3 months pregnant here. The song just before this was a duet with Floor Jansen called Sancta Terra. Great song, and worth checking out, but without harsh vocals from guitarist Mark Jansen. For another with Mark's harsh vocal, try Consign to Oblivion, live at the Zenith in Paris.

Just so you know the reason the orchestra fits in so well is because all their songs are written with an orchestra and choir. The albums are recorded with live instruments. Strings, choirs etc. the orchestra isn’t just background noise for this concert or their music. It’s half of the music. It’s also why I think so many metal fans are fans of “classical” music and why it’s not as shocking that the two genres go together. Or why metalheads have turned so many “classical” reactors into metalheads. Metal is much more of a technical heavy genre then say pop or country or rap. Imo epica embodies symphonic metal better then anyone else. Because they don’t shy away from the symphonic and metal parts but blend them together in the best ways possible. Especially after the drummer and guitarist change.

Hi, the orchestra and the choir is integral to their sound, some songs are more symphonic than others, but they are in every song, they have entire orchestral pieces of music on their albums my favorite is called 'The Fifth Guardian' composed by their lead guitarist Isaac Delahaye

So glad you discovered Epica!! You commented on the Les Paul but didn't notice it's a 7 string as well. Never seen that before:) For a heavier one checkout "The Essence of Silence" official live. Also Floor sings with her live on "Sancta Terra" in this concert:)

That's a 7 string Ibanez DN500K Darkstone hollow body that Isaac is playing here. He started using the 7 string Les Paul around 2015-2016. They do look really similar, but the Les Paul has 4 tuning pegs on the bottom and the Ibanez has 4 on top

Interesting to see you dig into symphonic metal bands like Nightwish and Epica, where Epica for sure is the way heavier end of this genre. I still keep having the vibe you dig real metalcore music a lot more as it pulls you from the seats and makes you throw your head ;) But as one who goes into all those genres too, it's great to see you doing these. Maybe the tighter/heavier songs from Epica could even catch you more? "Consign to Oblivion" - the live at Zenith/Paris one (!!!) already got recommended after the song on your youtube and I think this is one HELL of a performance to see :D I've also thought of the older "Kingdom of Heaven" life recording - not best sound quality and it has several subtitle lines (spanish and english?) but shows a killer song and performance to go in and get some more headbanging and epicness too xD

Consign To Oblivion Live at the Zenith This is a MUST for the EPICA journey. It is the bands best performance ever and one of their most epic progressive tracks. Most of it is super heavy with Marks vocals which I think you will enjoy alot.

That orchestral Bass drum absolutely adds depth to this version. Always love the way the band brings the orchestra in without drowning them out of the overall mix.

Yes, compare it to Rihanna's 13 minute performance at the Super Bowl at the time it was announced she was pregnant. This was a 3 hour concert. I think you can see the difference between pop and metal singers!
