Epictetus, a renowned stoic philosopher, lived a life that was characterized by major challenges, hardships and difficulties. He was born into slavery, and remained a slave for the first 33 years of his life. He did not even have a name. Epictetus literally means “Acquired One”, which is a name given to him by his master. He faced immense torture and mistreatment. Early in his life, he suffered a leg injury by his master. This left him with a life long limp.
