Another reason some scholars think the Philistines may be Aegean in origin is because of their tradition of settling battles by pitting opposing champions against each other in a duel. Goliath challenging Israel's army to single combat is pretty similar to the one-on-one duels in the Iliad.

@@TheAlmightyAss Apparently, it wasn't. A lot of biblical commentaries mention that duels between champions were very uncommon in Hebrew and other Near Eastern stories, which makes David and Goliath unusual. I'm no biblical scholar -- I just took biblical studies in college and remember reading about this topic, so take it with a grain of salt. However, it was evidently remarkable enough for the experts to take notice.

I came to find out his great grand parent came from southern Greece to South America. I did a little digging and found that my last name Odeh comes from the Greek name Ode. Both my Father and Mother are native Palestinians. It is quite a shock to me now that seeing your video that two peoples who might share the same ancestry. Would meet on another continent in America in class thousands of years later is amazing. Great Video, don’t stop the work. Odeh- our family come from the middle off the north island of n.z. deep in the south pacific. My sis was in france and someone there spotted her as a member off the long lost French Royal family. Then I was in Aucklad City and this Gypsy lady from France spoted me and told me my moms ancestors were the French Royal family. I did some investigations and found out that it was true.

@@Nderitu.G the modern day Palestinians are the decedents of all the people who have conquered that land or immigrated throughout its history. My Mothers father is who I was named after, had blonde hair and blue eyes. His wife my grandmother brown skin brown eyes was named STAR and her original village before marrying her husband and moving to his village was originally hundreds of year back populated by Hebrews. My ancestors were originally these ancient peoples who populated the land. In time through conquest and assimilation their languages, religions and culture changed. Not to mention all the peoples that fled their lands and came to Palestine for refuge like the Arabian Christians who left Arabia 800 years ago, the Armenian Christian from the Ottoman Turks and other Christian denominations and different religious just to name a few. The myth that the Arab Muslims stormed out of Arabia and killed everything in their path and repopulated all the land with Arabs is pure fantasy. Arab is not a race Arab in the modern context people in the region describe themselves as Arab meaning either either Arab culture or the Arabic language. I hope that helps you better understand. Feel free to ask me anything else and I’ll try my best to respond with what I know. Have a pleasant day.

The patterns the philistines follow sound eerily similar to what the Normans experienced. A sea faring group of warrior pirates that were defeated by the local leadership and then offered land in a buffer zone, where they mingled with the locals. The Normans, within one generation or so, switched from their Viking traditions to Christianity and from speaking their native Norse tongue to speaking the French dialect of the time. So, it's not that far-fetched to claim that the Philistines underwent a similar process of cultural integration.

That's an interesting thought, but in reality, the Peleset were likely indigenous to Southern Canaan. The Egyptians defeated them (and several other allied groups) at the Battle of the Delta, but also fought a major land battle against them three years earlier in Djahy, which is essentially the homeland of the Philistines. Djahy is the Egyptian word for southern Retjenu, the latter being the Egyptian word for Canaan.

Early iron was very hit or miss. An inferior piece could be very brittle and rust overnight. Once the smelting technology matured, huge amounts could be produced cheaply because of the availabilty of iron ore compared to copper and tin. This made it possible to equip armies on a much larger scale with metal weapons. So it’s not so much that a soldier with iron weapons and armor would have a huge advantage against a soldier equipped with bronze. More that once iron could be produced reliably on a large scale, there was really no need to keep producing the more expensive bronze war equipment.

@@FerasLab the way I see it, iron "popularized" weaponry, and made it available for the masses, without the need of a functioning central government to ensure the supply of the super scarce tin. I don't think iron is such a great advantage by itself, like @Sven-Arne Skarvik said. In a battle between 2 equal armies, the fact that one has iron weapons and the other bronze, would be a rather minor point, specially, like @Sven-Arne Skarvik said, iron of this time was probably of very bad quality.

The reason pork is forbidden in the Old Testament/Torah is because God didn’t want the Hebrews associating with the philistines, since the philistines introduced pigs, and pigs were *_NOT_* native to the levant before that? Of course, when that rule was made, it was before the Philistines arrived and introduced pigs. That’s why the rule doesn’t _specifically_ mention pigs, only animals in general that meat a certain characteristic, because if pigs had been mentioned by name, nobody would have known what they were at the time(until the philistines introduced them later on…).

You are correct in that folks in that era tended to merge their Pantheons and tried to identify which god was the same as their god. The art style is crude but vibrant and soulful, which is perfect! Wouldn't have it any other way at all. I cannot help but feel really impressed at the sheer amount of assets you have made at this point in your YT career. Characters, map assets, little details like the textures of the sea being creatures, recreations of historical objects (ie the Minoan warrior urn). Do you ever think you will share your art? The number of ancient character drawings you've done alone could literally fuel the next dozen years' amateur historians and tabletop roleplayers' passions. I can't help but think that the world is weird and if KZbin explodes sometime in the future then literally all you've done will be lost and your art resources on ancient world cultures is so comprehensive at this point if you kept doing it and eventually released it publically you'd gain a lot of popularity and also in my view really help build up your brand and name.

This is really neat! I learned a little bit of Philistine history in Sunday School, of course, but only insofar as it touched on Hebrew and Judeo-Christian history. I think now that I'm older I appreciate the idea of a more nuanced outlook on ancient civilizations that weren't taught to me as being "the good guys." There's something to be said for complicating the Biblical narrative, I think, and allowing our take on the people in the narrative to become more complex. Obviously, I am coming at this from a Judeo-Christian perspective, but even from that perspective, I find this more complicated relationship presented here much more likely and more compelling than the simple "Israelites good, Philistines bad" narrative.

The ONLY reason why the Filistines were portrayed as the bad guys was because they were polytheists. Where's the crime in that? Those texts were written by ✡️ who were very biased against Filistines. Everyone feared and envied the Filistines. The Brits envied the Filistines so bad that they turned philistine into an insult. Heavy hands are worn to the bone by blisters from battle. Staggering heaving helmets not held high are yet gleaming with a horrid red glare. Realistically Goliath was around 6'4. There's no physically possible way Goliath was a towering giant, the human body can't do it. Robert Wadlow is the tallest recorded man standing at 8'11, he could barely walk, he was always short of breath, and he had tons of heart issues. Yet people think that Goliath was somehow in the 9+ feet range AND be an incredible warrior. If we base how the human body is when it gets to Robert Wadlow, Goliath wouldn't have been able to fight at all because his body would just give out. What's most likely happened about Goliath's height is that over the thousands of years the story has been embellished, especially since for hundreds of years these stories weren't written down but told verbally. If you've ever played the game telephone, you should know how easy it is for people to muddy details. Your king defeating a guy who's 9 feet tall is a lot more of an exciting story than your king fighting a guy who's just 'pretty tall'. Humans love embellishing height since we think height means power or strength. Even in modern history we do this. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were both pretty tall guys for the time, George being 6'2 and Lincoln being 6'4. In many depictions of the two Presidents they're made to look taller than most. Reverse all this with Napoleon, he was average height but British propaganda pushed an idea that he was incredibly short. This creating the 'Napoleon Complex'.

Epimetheus should be put in charge of the concept art of the next total war bronze age collapse. I want to see those habiru desert people as bands of brigands and I want to sack canaan with this Pellesets.

Awesome and really accurate based on what we have of evidence. Just missing the the Ebro (Hebrews) invasion to Canaan which was mentioned in the Amaranth letters to Akhenaten and happened 200 years prior to the sea people invasion to the costal Canaan region

Archaeologists don't agree that the hapiru were Hebrews, it's just a name for different peoples living on the margins of society, like bandits. Currently the prevailing opinion is that the Judeans and Israelites were just remnants of the Canaanite hill people.

There wasnt a hebrew invasion. The Judean people are the last remaining canaanites. There was only a phillistine invasion.

@@Abilliph Does it mean non of the original Canaanites tribe kept any record of the Hebrew invasion after they crossed the Red sea into Canaan? The Bible was very detailed about the various tribes the Hebrews had to fight and overcome before settling the land. Recall also that the scouts sent out by Moses into Canaan prior to their invasion reported to have met huge people (giants) and we know that the Hebrews invaded from the south which incidentally lies on the same latitude as the Philistine lands. My point is that the Philistines are most likely descendants of a mixture of the rest of the southern cannaanite tribes and the sea warriors just like the author of this video stated. I'm yet to identify who arrived first between the Hebrews and the sea warriors into the area but I know that the Philistines only appeared to be at war with the Israelites only after the Hebrews had decided to have kings just like all other surrounding tribes of the area. The few hundreds of years they were led by judges had many cannaanite tribes mentioned except the Philistines.

@@igbounitedforum3386 yes.. there is no record of a Hebrew invasion to Canaan anywhere else. I'm talking from the scientific standpoint of course. The Philistines left behind material culture that suggests their origin was Greek.. I'm sure they also mixed with the Canaanites to some degree. Judeans and Israelites material culture is equivalent to the Canaanite one.. No part of their culture suggests that they originated in other places. Also, we have evidence suggesting that the Philistine language was a type of Greek... While the Hebrew language is a Canaanite language to its core. There is nothing on the ground to suggest, the Hebrews weren't just a group of Canaanites.

@@Abilliph Hmmm... Does it mean the whole biblical chronology about Abraham's journey from Mesopotamia through Canaan land down to Egypt through to the formation of the nation of Hebrew in Egypt and their Exodus was all untrue? Does it mean that the series of wars they fought with different tribes of Canaan before supplanting those tribes to occupy majority of the land weren't true? Was canaanland uninhabited when Israel was still in it's formative stage i.e when Jacob was still a family man in Canaan?

My grandmother is a Messina (well, so I am I then.). My great great grandfather Messina came from Southern Italy, Casaluce. My grandmother's brother and my grandmother took a dna tests. My grandmother's test said she's 4% middle eastern and my great uncle's test said he's 4% Jewish. My dna test says I'm 3% middle eastern. My sister and I were both doing studies on the ancient Mycenaean. It turns out the Messina's are the ancient Messenians/Mycenaean. You can look up the history. So, my dna confirms my family history. I grew up hating the Philistines and the Caananites because they were the enemy of Israel. I LOVED Israel so much that I named my son after Isaac. Now I find out I'm a Philistine and Caananite. I guess Jesus Christ has an interesting way of changing people's heart towards their enemies.

Great video! Though i think you have missed the memo of the genetical analysis that was conducted on a philistine cemetery in ashqelon that showed without a shadow of a doubt that the philistines were originally mostly of Aegean ancestry that were slowly assimilating and marrying the local population, the further the skeleton from the 10th century bce the less Aegean DNA they have.
